I realize now the signs were there and should’ve been obvious.

I work as a stocker and sub cashier at our local store so I interact with a lot of people on a daily basis; we get several who come over from a neighboring bush village (rural Alaska), one person in particular comes over a lot and I have found myself slowly becoming more interested in them, well it turns out the reason they come over is their fiancé lives here and I should have realized that their disinterest and politeness was because of this, I am oblivious to this kind of thing and now that I know, I will most likely avoid being anything but professional with them.

If I had a dollar for every attractive person I’ve met who was in a relationship or met them at a bad time, I’d probably have a full wallet. Life works in weird ways.

Yeah, honestly, that happens more often than not if you're meeting people in "normalized" situations - such as work or school. Most of the women I work with are engaged or have boyfriends. Dating is definitely a numbers game, you need to maximize your exposure to other *singles*. Your best bet, is to find events in your immediate vicinity that singles frequent.

Divorce courts. That's where the real action is.

A good rule is to never date anyone at work or work adjacent. It can blow up and ruin your livelihood in an instant at worst and make things super awkward at best.

The only problem with this advice is that it's true.

My general rule of thumb is "don't shit where you eat, unless you really want to pursue something beyond a physical relationship" I'd be willing to move jobs to secure the love of my life, for example... But a hookup? Hell no.

Don't fish where you make your bread. Fish where you break your bread

AKA: Don't shit where you eat. (Though I think you could flex this if you're in different departments in different buildings of a mega-corp)

I don’t plan on doing that, my other issue is is living in such a small place; it never takes long for people to start gossiping and spreading rumors, this was how my last attempt at a relationship ended.

Bummer. I always suggest finding a group of like minded people. Join an American Sign Language class, volunteer at a food bank, join a voter registration initiative or drive.

Instructions unclear. Dated a woman I met at work, and now I've been happily married for 14 years.

That was 20 years ago and so you probably have a more traditional value set. Today we have 17 year old kids swatting people 3000 miles away with the potential of getting that swatted person killed by the government. Things have changed and people today are eager to ruin lives for a little internet clout or revenge if given the chance.

People are swatting others from 3,000 miles away when they date a co-worker?

Maybe, but not my point. My point was the levels that people are willing to escalate to have changed.

Probably should talk to the person before you bring them home, then. Or maybe work somewhere that isn't full of psychopaths, if you're worried you'll get swatted for daring them.
