It's going to be location specific. There are some places where only the moderate dems have a real chance of winning and other places where progressive dems can win big. Being a true swing state and not an already bluish state, Michigan makes a good benchmark at where progressives are at nationally. A win would be a great sign, a bad loss would be a terrible sign, and a narrow loss would be disappointing but not discouraging because it would show they're on the right track.

As someone who lives in Michigan, my gut currently says Rogers flips the seat. This is based of the fact he wasn't really challenged in the primaries, so he already has his party unified behind him, and Al-Sayed doesn't have that luxury. That gives Rogers a starting advantage. He can concentrate on the independent types. We'll have a much better sense at how well Al-Sayed can unify his own party within a few weeks. Then the gut may change.

45% of Americans identify as independent. You need their vote. Currently the GOP are doing Red Scare 2.0. What are the Democrats doing? Most of them seem to be doing nothing. The only ones who seem to be doing anything seem to be going farther and farther left. This is not a good response to Red Scare 2.0. You're just giving the GOP more to work with. Currently Trump and the GOP are tanking, but if you push independents away, you're looking at 4+ years of Vance/Rubio in 2028.

My take is that "don't scare the centrists" is a doom spiral. Establishment Dem policy is to the right of Reagan on most key issues at this point.
