I would not enjoy living there

It's not the geology, it's the Guatemala City water system. Their city water mains and sewage pipes are leaky, which creates sinkholes.

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Guatemala just got Guatepeor

FUCK! Dropped my Nokia.

It's like they're too round and perfectly lit.

Except in Florida, they've built nuclear power plants on them: http://www.duke-energy.com/power-plants/nuclear/crystal-river.asp

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, I guess this place is just one giant nope for me

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

can a geologist properly explain sinkholes? it fascinates me

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

CnlKurtz: Water flowing through soluble bedrock, usually limestone. Forms karst terrain with caves underneath, prone to sinkholes

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I know that some sinkholes are caused by the erosion of limestone.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Karst Geology maybe? Its when water runs through limestone and quickly erodes the underlying rock layers

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Is it water or Satan?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, Maybelline

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Water kills 100% of the people who drink it. Fact.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No. Gravity.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If I can recall,it was due to this lousy draining system since workers half ass everything they do. We all sorta facepalmed when it happened

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i suggest watching tremors, gives a great explanation

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sometimes underground caves (formerly formed by water).. Or fragile clay

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Could be lack of water. Over use of aquifers beneath the city can destabilise rock and cause it to collapse

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Game over: User wins

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Unrelated I know but this comment made me think of Life Aquatic when Ned asks about the jellfish on the beach.

There you go, sauce! Human water pipe system eroding volcanic ash (pumice), plus weather storms.

12 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 5

...This also happens on PC, perhaps?

12 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Not sure if chunks still sometimes fail to load or not on PC, but they used to definitely.

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It sure used to happen, but I've not seen it in a long time.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It mostly happens when you're flying around in a jetpack from Industrial craft 2.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm no geologist, but I'm going with gypsy curse.

12 years ago | Likes 190 Dislikes 2

That seems completely reasonable to me.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

As a gypsy, I'm going with geologist curse.

12 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

Ha! Were you a Gypsy you would be insulted by the word gypsy. It's derogatory. They call themselves The Romani, or The Rom. XD

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I just asked my dad. Dolomite is generally the cause, even the slightest amount of acid will disolve the rock, and hey much hole very sink.

12 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 3

Dolomite doesn't dissolve that easily, certainly less readily than limestone.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wait, a 1970s pimp is to blame? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072895/

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Guatemala's 40% dolomite!

12 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Guacamole's 40% Vegemite?

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

he's now given me a book called the origin of sedimentary rocks to read before commenting on this. Apparently it's important to know.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

IT'S DOLOMITE, BABY!

12 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Not sure everyone gets this but you beat me to it. I'm old. I got it!

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

wow

12 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

my dad cares what the interenet thinks hes said

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

More like dogemite!

12 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

My dad says Dolomite and Limestone have the same essential chemical make up, but dolomite has been placed under pressure.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Limestone can dissolve in plain water, while dolomite requires a bit of acid to help, so limestone's probably a bigger contributor.

12 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Actually H20 combines/dissolves CO2 to form a weak acid that is what dissolves the limestone. Similarly dolomite is susceptible to the acid.

12 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Ah, yes. Been too long since geology 101. Dolomite is susceptible as I recall, but since it has a mg cation in addition to a Ca cation (1/2)

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

it is somewhat less vulnerable than limestone. Dolomite had to be powdered to fizz in the lab while limestone fizzed readily. I think. (2/2)

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But apparently Guatemala has more dolomite than limestone, so I was double-wrong.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

ha, not an issue. I didn't know the basic geology of Guatemala either and I'm a just qualified geophysicist, in Australia.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Water (either from storms or sewer leaks) eroding the volcanic rock under the city.

12 years ago | Likes 383 Dislikes 5

sauce=ginjninj's separate comment. All upvotes to him.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Volcanic rocks don't dissolve in water. Limestone readily does though.

12 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 2

Yeah I was thinking it is more like a Karst type of geology

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Pumice will though. It if is unconsolidated and not solid rock, it can be washed away through pipe leaks and storm water run-off.

12 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

But something has to give underneath it. It could be karst cover with pumice...

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was thinking this too, not sure OP actually knows Geology.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

OP is right. These sinkholes were caused by human activity and not nature. The storm water washes away the loose pumic and a hole opens up.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I don't, but it's not Limestone and it doesn't dissolve. It mechanically washes. Check @ginjninj 's link below.

12 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

This is actually really interesting, thanks for the sauce!

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

so one way or another, the city is currently sitting on what is basically a giant dirt 'bridge', and it's waiting for the wrong jolt.

12 years ago | Likes 91 Dislikes 0

fuuucccckkkkk. can you imagine if it just... sunk?

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Atlantis actually existed in the past. Do you think it could've sunk because of this kind of geology?

12 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

That... makes alot of sense actually

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0
