They tend to cycle through emotional states (happy, sad, angry, etc) and wholly forget things they were just told.
Just a reminder to those that drive while even only slightly intoxicated: the only difference between you and this woman here, is luck. If you drink, don’t drive. Period.

In these specific circumstances, probably yeah. Ideally she would be rehabilitated, but that isn't what American prisons do. If they have any effect at all, it's usually for the worst. We've been conditioned to think "lock them up and let them think about what they've done with the other criminals" is a deterrent for recidivism, but statistically, it isn't. I sincerely hope she came out for the better, but if she got out and did it again, yes more time would have been more beneficial for society

In South Carolina (where this occurred) the sentencing range for felony DUI where you seriously injure or kill a person is 1-25 years. Bear in mind, she blew a 0.264% against a limit of 0.08% and killed two people.
Yes, but my question is a bit more about the purpose of the “punishment”. Society benefits from deterring more crimes, rehabilitating the infringer, or isolating them. The latter is the most likely to benefit from more years. But some people seem to be more keen on eye-for-an-eye retaliation.

In these specific circumstances, probably yeah. Ideally she would be rehabilitated, but that isn't what American prisons do. If they have any effect at all, it's usually for the worst. We've been conditioned to think "lock them up and let them think about what they've done with the other criminals" is a deterrent for recidivism, but statistically, it isn't. I sincerely hope she came out for the better, but if she got out and did it again, yes more time would have been more beneficial for society

TBC, my point was not to dunk on someone who was very clearly not well. Our prison system is an embarrassment and our education is just outright depressing. She did something horrible and in a better system, she would pay for it by being rehabilitated and contributing to society.

Yes, but my question is a bit more about the purpose of the “punishment”. Society benefits from deterring more crimes, rehabilitating the infringer, or isolating them. The latter is the most likely to benefit from more years. But some people seem to be more keen on eye-for-an-eye retaliation.
