In early February 2026, the government announced a “zero tolerance” sweep aimed at identifying and shutting down religious facilities operating without state approval. The policy applies to all faiths under the law, though much of the public discussion has centered on unofficial mosques in Athens.

As soon as I saw your title I knew it was a lie.
I didn't have the first idea about this situation I just know Greeks and that they are rational people.
These sorts of clickbait things are really bad for everyone affected.
You shouldn't do this stuff.

If I remember right, it was because places of worship are required to pay taxes and a lot of "underground" mosques are trying to avoid that.

Mostly it’s to insure such places comply with building codes such has having the required emergency exits with signage, fire extinguishers, etc., that any other commercial building must comply with.

Of course it is something like that?
Have you ever known Greek people?
They have their funny ways but they are very compassionate people.
I honestly think most people are pretty tolerant when someone isn't intentionally stirring up tension.

This is what I've found.
