Explanation: The Thousand Sons are one of the Traitor Legions of Chaos Space Marines who are sworn solely to the service of Tzeentch, the Chaos God of change, intrigue and sorcery, though they were once the Imperium of Man's XVth Legion of Space Marines. The main feature that distinguishes the Thousand Sons from the other Traitor Legions is the sheer number of psyker mutations that have always existed amongst the Space Marines in this Legion.

Fun Fact: In older source material—pre-dating the addition of the Rubric of Ahriman to the background—not all Thousand Sons were said to be psykers, though all had sorcerous knowledge and various minor levels of magic ability. They operated in effectively the same way—individuals of great power supported by line troops—but for completely different reasons. In addition, earlier edition models and artwork made much use of the trope of Tzeentch gifting physical mutations upon his followers. This trope vanished from the background with the introductions of the Thousand Sons' distinctive visual design, their own unique miniatures and the concept of Rubric Marines, but has since been reincorporated into the background as the Flesh-change.

It never ceases to amaze me how nerds will overtly sexualize anything. Genetically altered space men who have to be men because women undergoing the space marine treatment violently die? Believe it or not, fan art has giant tiddies.

Thousand Sons has often felt to me like something of an outlier legion. Many legions seem to be in pairs where they're 2 sides of the same coin, iron warriors and imperial fists, raven guard and night lords, and so on. In "current" 40k of course grey knights are the psychic other side of the coin to the thousand sons but during the heresy there really wasn't that other side

The Wolves.

They are extremely steeped in magic and psyker bullshit, they simply pretend that it’s totally different.

Then you have the barbarism vs civilization thing.

Both have primarchs and legions utterly defined by their intrinsic belief in their own superiority to the point when it causes critical issues, both are brutally humbled.

Both are hypocritical in the extreme, but that’s pretty normal 40k.

Both are heavily aligned to a god, the Sons are obvious but the Wolves are basically

I've personally always considered the wolves and their focus on melee and the berserker like state that especially their blood claws have make them more of a mirror to the world eaters than to the sons. Yes the wolves became rivals of the son when they were sent to destroy the son's home world but their general tactics and style of combat feels more like a mirror to how the world eaters fight than how the sons fight.

The Norsca IN SPACE and are very closely aligned with Khorne even if they refuse to see it.

Both have extremely limited recruitment options.

Both have iconic familiars which are not what they appear to a horrific and hypocritical level, the wolves the Space Wolfs use are not wolves(They backed off a bit later but they were all but stated to be heavily mutated/genetically alter humans) while the Sons have their ‘friendly’ warp buddies who are just daemons.

The crucial difference between the

Two is that Russ actually won when the Wolves were manipulated into fucking the Imperium sideways via playing on the ego and prejudices of their Primarch due to Magnus not committing.

If Magnus had fought from the start then the legions would have destroyed each other, desperation is Chaos’s favorite tool for corruption.

If Magnus had actually given up and not done his half assed sulk Russ would have been brutally blue balled and likely would have rampaged anyway out of hate, an easy opening

To be exploited by Chaos.

Instead Magnus half fought, meaning that the Wolves had a good reason to fight and showed their prejudices as correct(Avoiding a massive split with the Emperor) while not facing anywhere near the level of resistance they could have faced due to Magnus keeping his legion in the dark, sabotaging the defenses, and staying out of the fight until the last minute.
