Did they have Snollebollekes there with them to preform this song or was it just the music playing?

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not in Dallas, but still cool

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Yeah, that's their thing. :-)

Don't mention this to the Irish out of context.

Goddamit I just got this song out of my head.

You do not need an orange drink to energise you, just watching the color is so refreshing.

University of Texas wears orange too so checkmate Ductch fans.

Oranjeboom Oranjeboom, it a beer not a tune!

I was in Basel Switzerland during the Euro Cup a few years back. The same thing appended there, and the city nearly ran out of beer! It was a blast.

Two conflicting feelings: these guys are absolute cunts for supporting the WC by going to the USA, of all places.

And also, they're cunts for being Dutch.

Two things I can't stand in this world:

It's not that good anymore. We're getting quite intolerant here. I hate it.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a dutch person, thats fair.

v

1 month ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yeah. Us Dutchies wear orange because it’s the color of the Dutch royal House of Orange-Nassau.

It's also why the New York Knicks and New York Islanders are orange and blue uniforms, and why Nassau County, NY has orange and blue official colors, and why New York City has orange, white, and blue official colors. Dutch roots go deep in NY! NY Knicks and Islanders fans are like third-cousins to Dutch sports.

"orange, white, and blue" Yikes. That flag is nowadays used in right wing extremist Dutch protests and propaganda.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It's also why carrots are orange, IIRC - orange carrots were bred for the House of Orange and subsequently popularized by the Dutch. Although that may be an urban legend...

The southern tip of Manhattan (local Manna Hatta) was New Amsterdam for a spell, and it was the dutch eic that raised the palisade that gave wallstreet its name. Albany was called Fort Oranje.

And when you're not wearing orange you're wearing black(face)

1 month ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 12

Blackface is currently only being supported by racist far right groups. You hardly see it anymore.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I'm dutch living in the US, and I describe this national holiday as "racist santa".

1 month ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Then you’re doing your fatherland a disservice. It took some getting used to, but now Black Pete is replaced by Soot Smudge Pete. There are pockets of racist right wingers that insist on Pete wearing black face, but it’s mostly gone.

This "tradition" has been changed. The story has always been that these (black pete) peope are the helpers of St Nikolaas. They go down chimney's and are thus root-covered. Although the "slave" imagery is very strong. Nowadays most celebrations don't use blackface anymore (thankfully) although there is a percentage of the population insisting that it's not racist and has nothing to do with slavery. They want to uphold the "black pete", rather then "pete". I say fuck them, it's racist.

WIth a LOT of opposition. Some cities explicitly want the backface Petes.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*some villages and towns. And change always meets resistance, so that’s not new. The media also likes to stick a camera in the face of the most extreme opinions on both sides of the discussion, while the majority is working hard to resolve the issue. The important thing is that it’s been addressed and large solved.

Yes. Some people see no correlation between a black face, red lips, curly hair, and "acting a bit dumb" with the caricature of enslaved people. (see also Sjors & Sjimmie from the 50s) Not to mention that they are the servants (NL: knecht) of an old white man. They say its tradition and should not be changed. But it's a children's celebration, those kids don't give a hoot what Pete looks like. No, this is the parents being small-minded and incapable of change, hiding behind tradition. Fuck them.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

These parents are incapable of recognizing/admitting that what they did in their childhood is no longer okay (well, it never was, but we didn't know better..?) and should be changed. Another fine reference: The "Chineese" version of Happy Birthday sung in preschool. (Hanky Panky Shanghai...) complete with pulling your eyes into slits. Utterly racist.
