The best kind of correct.

Tried to do that my first D&D game to the statue I KNEW was going to turn the guy into the last boss, DM wouldn't let me since it had no HP

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If they want to get through that way, let them. However, don't give them extra rewards. I always give extra rewards for solving puzzles.

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

It could be worse, he could have used it to topple a tower which you had created multiple complex encounters inside

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I dunno, if you’re gonna bust out the big guns, you deserve a reward.

5 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 3

burned a high level spell slot. Thats what puzzles and encounters are for, burning resources of the players. The door did its job.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I mean that’s a 6th level spell, so they’re at least level 11. Using it this way instead of saving for a difficult fight. Go on ahead.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

"Unfortunately, Ray of Disintegration has no effect on magic items, and since the door is enchanted, it is a waste of that slot."

5 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

This is the correct answer. The kind of player that interrupts descriptions to lazily throw spells at the problem is 99% of the time the

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

kind of player who doesn't read spell descriptions either, so kill two birds with one stone. They used the slot and it was worthless because

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

they didn't pay attention to their spells or what you were saying. Now, what would the rest of the party like to do?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The door disintegrates, behind it is another door, it has five symbols... I CAN DO THIS ALL DAY GREG

5 years ago | Likes 152 Dislikes 2

I cast etherealness and walk through that door. BET YOU WISH YOU READ MY SPELL LIST NOW DONCHA BOB?

5 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

The door is 5 foot wide. In the middle there is anti-magic field, your being is squised in the mechanism of the door. You are dead.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

You don't even need an A-M field to stop ethereal/phasing/whatever. Mix gorgon blood into the material of the door. Prevents passage.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Alternately, put a deathtrap on the other side. Something fiendishly complicated. Magic, poison, blades, the works.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This one I like.

5 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

"Oh jeez what a shame you didn't realize the door was surrounded by an antimagic field, solve the fucking puzzle Jeff"

5 years ago | Likes 438 Dislikes 5

ah yes let me just... mages disjunction. you were saying? about the pile of ashe that was the puzzle?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nah, at that level I wouldn't bother with that kind of puzzle, it would be something different entirely.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Reflect magic , RIP Jeff

5 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

the door was trapped with magic detection causing a thick swarm of spiders fall on you, roll for for constitution.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I'm sure every single d&d character I've ever rolled would rather die after that.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Disintegrate the door.... Such a Jeff thing to do

we skipped to the end of a dungeon, without even realizing it, because the druid used Shape Stone to get a metal door off the wall it was 1/

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

mounted to; the door was kept by the beef cleric we had and used to solve so many other problems down the line.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You're going to spend a 6th level spell because you're too lazy to solve a riddle? Hope you're not going to regret not having that later...

5 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

"The door vanishes with a green glow, and you stare into the glowing red eyes of a bronze golem." Link in reply:

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Yeah pretty much, don't add the golem as a response to the wasted spell though, just make a challenging dungeon where players have to be 1/2

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

smart about using their ressources. Then one of these days make a "puzzle" door, where they're pressed for time so that then it's smart 2/3

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

to use the disintegrate to bypass it fast before a trap causes a TPK. 3/3

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

but pretty up there and with nasty nasty attacks and defenses.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

If you ever played dnd you know how unrealistic it would be that dm would be like "welp, nothing I can do about that"

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ahh, dnd, the rail shooter game we all know so well. If you don't want your players to exercise options, why not write a book instead?

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 4

Reward cleverness of your players. Also high level parties can bypass a lot of obstacles.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

If it's a magical puzzle then the person that created it probably added anti magic defenses like being able to reflect spells at the caster

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Does it really matter if they are using resources and are having fun doing it?

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Has nobody heard of Alexander and the Gordian Knot ?

5 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

No, but I've heard about Alexander and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I have knot.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Super-intricate knot, whoever can unravel it is destined for... something. Alexander "unraveled" it with his sword.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Level 12 adventurers probably aren't solving many door puzzles at that point, at least ones that aren't magic resistant.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh no I am a near godlike being that can manipulate and destroy reality with a thought but this one puzzle door has foiled my prowess! /s

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

The door was actually supporting a stone beam, that acted as a plug for a pool filled with lava.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's why so many old adventures have doors described as being immune to magic or that does nasty things when you attempt to screw with it.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

On the other side of the door is a group of surprised enemies. Roll initiative, all friendly characters get advantage. Reward resource usage

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

I agree with the sentiment. I'd only give them the initiative bonus if the rest of the crew was prepared and the enemies couldn't hear >>>

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

<<< the casting.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Considering how thick the door was I’d make it at least a DC 20 perception check to hear conversation-volume casting through the door.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

How thick was the door?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

If it was thick enough to be a puzzle door it was probably made of stone or metal. Thick enough for mechanisms.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

The puzzle is disintegrated off the door making it unsolvable. You are locked out.

5 years ago | Likes 285 Dislikes 4

You disintegrate three of the symbols. Better remember which was which.

5 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

also there seems to be a deep rumble coming from the stones and theres some sand coming down from the seeling

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Jokes aside, punishing players for using their abilities is a dick move, especially if it's to railroad them.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 8

Eh, depends. If other players love puzzles and they are being dicks then absolutely punish them. If they are just thinking laterally, cool

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but this is more of a player not thinking and getting consequences. Plus it's more fun to run with it than just go 'k, you're in'

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

And it's not unreasonable. Assuming the dungeon is appropriately geared to defend against a lvl 11 party (at least), 1/2

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

a competent designer would have taken a known spell into account when designing their security system. 2/2

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If my players do not allow my to finish the description. Then I will corrupt the action. "You disintegrate the door reveling the .." 1/?

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

reveling the enchanted mithril plates that now lock. You have been locked out of the room and you hear multiple roars coming from the other

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

hallways. Roll for initiative." This is a consequence of actions.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I always make sure to add details to my notes for when players are dicks.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Players have a bad habit of thinking they are special. They aren't. There were Level 13 Wizards before they strolled along.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Or my personal favorite: you improperly disengaged the trap the puzzle was attached to. It has now gone off

5 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 0

Roll a dexterity saving throw!

5 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

You're punishing the wizard. Make it str or sc based lol

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Ac* freaking auto correct

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Hmm. *Trap goes off* The roof drops down on you, throw a strength saving throw to see if you survive the rockfall.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Does a 28 hit?

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

spells are a resource much like cunning and intelligence, allow players to use one if they lack the other.

5 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 3

This guy gets it

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Right? If they are using resources and are having fun, I don't see an issue here...

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They might have more smarts than they realize, and having a master key for every puzzle is boring.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

1. Puzzle take a very long time to make. 2. The player at your table the door puzzle is for is probably not the triggerhappy wizard.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

You are absolutly right. It still feels shitty, putting 4+ hours in a Puzzle to just let it vanish into thin Air.

5 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

the secret is to reuse the things they break in ways they never expect, move the door puzzle to a treasure chest, etc.

5 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 2

Agree on both counts. I genuinely think "I just break the fucking door down." is a perfectly valid solution and want to encourage it. But,1/

5 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

you can't always get away with that. The solution to one of my puzzles, a list of glyphs after putting the glyphs together, was the 2/

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

sequence to unlock a chamber holding the bosses heart. They still got to fight and eventually beat him, but boy howdy was it a bad time

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Who puts 4 hours into a puzzle? Bullshit. I've designed a LOT of fucking puzzles and I've never spent more than 30 minutes on one, max.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 5

Sounds like you make generic puzzles honestly

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Lol!!! No. I've just been doing this for a really long time, and I do it as a hobby, even when I'm not actively running a game.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

And from day one you created intricate puzzles with lore based solutions in 30 minutes?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't make them often and I am not good with Puzzles. I wright good lore and ludonarrative but my puzzles are ... not good or take long

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's valid. If the reason it takes you forever is inexperience, that's perfectly okay. Just recognize that you personal experience isn't a

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

reliable benchmark for how long it reasonably should take someone to design one.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Roll a perception check, 1. Okay, you cast, the spell hits a reflective barrier and reflects back at the wizard vaporizing them.

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 7

Any DM who pulled shit like this has no business being a DM.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 6

I had a DM pull this all the time. It was usually the rogue's fault for not warning the wizard of the magical trap. On one occasion, it 1/

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

was the wizard's fault for not remembering every single door encountered up to this point had spell reflection or that we were breaking 2/

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

into a mage prison, so of course the puzzle door is going to have it too! 3/3

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

In all fairness, anyone who casts a spell at a door in a mage prison kinda deserves the reflected spell.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I had no problem with alternate solutions, but I had a pet peeve with "I go through the door." My players learn to open the door and look.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

There was a solid month with one party where there was a padded 20-ft pit on the other side of they did that. No damage, just wasted time.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Honestly my pet peeve runs there other direction (probably because we're not a dungeon heavy campaign) but it's like "can we not sit in 1/2

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Hallway and look in at the room?" Just go in and I'll give you a chance to react if theres something dangerous.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

You don't enjoy watching your players descend into sanity-damaging paranoia as they keep hearing you say, "You detect no traps this time"?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

What the fuck is wrong with all of the people on here getting mad about this? As a DM with 17 years of experience, this is fucking brilliant

5 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 6

Totally agree

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

No, it's fucking stupid, but fine. They wasted resources, and I can reuse the puzzle later with superficial changes.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 8

Seriously. its about forging a narrative. Nuking the puzzle door may be far more memorable than tediously solving it. And no more spell slot

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

How did this get downvoted? If you're any good at DMing, you realize at least 1/3 of your plans are made irrelevant by player decisions.

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

It's brilliant the first time. Thereafter, it's kinda annoying and boring, especially if other players want to do the puzzle.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

I remember people bitching about this shit on the TSR forums back in the 2.E days. It's hardly new.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

It's a very repeatable way to ignore non-combat based content (good puzzle doors take a long time to make too!)

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 5

As a dm with 5 years experience I would let it slide a few times but I'd defo be thinking of ways to keep my puzzles relevant.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Dude, if the wizard wants to waste his sixth level spell slots on door puzzles, fucking let him. It's fewer spell slots for monsters.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

"I want my players to think outside the box, be creative, etc." *players think outside the box. "No, not like that."

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thinking out side the box is throwing a horse on fire thru a window as a distraction. Its not , use fireball to solve all problems.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Im totally fine with zany solutions, but as dm i have the right to weigh the degree of the action and whether its worth bending the rule

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Exactly!!

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ok, you vaporize a few inches of the doors surface and break the lock mechanism, the door is still locked. What do you do next?

5 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 4

I cast Ray of Greater Disintegration

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Well its a Giant door... lets say a meter thick. So that gets you to allmost the first ¼. The hinges start to crack.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I cast Ray of Greatest Disintegration

Bombarda... Maxima

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Disintegrate destroys up to a 10 ft cube, the real answer is that any wizard worth their salt would have anticipated disintegrate and 1/2

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Enchanted the door with some simple durability magic, to prevent it being forced, and disintegrate doesn't affect magic items, 2/2

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

10ft cube is about .3 cubic meter. If the door is, say, 10x5 it takes a thin slice from the surface.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No no, a cube 10 feet on each side, not 10 cubic feet. A massive amount of material.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's 10ft on each side (1000cu. ft.) It will cut 3 meters wide, high, and deep. Show me a door that's 3m thick and I'll show you a bad DM

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You cast the spell and it appears to have no effect. You are now down a spell slot

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

The real storage is in noneuclidean space. You can only redirect the door to the correct space by solving the puzzle on this side.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes the "on this side" is there because it is Intentionally Ominous™.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My dnd group fell apart when this happened. Every attempt at a non combat based task ended badly

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

"The symbol of the horned bear burns bright for a moment, before disappearing. Somewhere distant, a roar shakes the treeline."

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fuck that. The interior of the door was hollow and full of mercury, which begins to flow rapidly down the corridor towards you.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Embedded door were 600 skeletal warriors, you just freed them!

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Any magical item is immune to disintegrate, conveniently.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have played with a lot of GM's that would basically say just that.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or there are very angry ogres behind now

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Congrats, you were so effective you blew up the door AND the bridge on the other side.

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

luckily there is another bridge you can lower into place, on the dais beside the pit there are 5 symbols and 5 animal carvings...

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've actually used this line before. Though if it's creative enough I won't use the plot armor.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"OK you fire your ray on the mirror door and disintegrate yourself roll up another character"

5 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

And then soon you're DMing for your stuffed animals. It's a win win!

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

see now THAT is how you get people to not want you to dm anymore cause you're a gigantic cunt.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

"I target the wall next to the door".

5 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 0

Magic exudes from the door into the wall in striations. Causing it to explode, not disintegrate. Shrapnel hits you at 300mph... *Roll dmg*

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

lol to live through that you either have to be tanky as heck or lucky. XD

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The doors magic, sealing what ever is behind it, arcs out from the frame and counters your spell. Now. Back. To. The. Puzzle.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Once had a player decide to walk into the wall and whichever way his nose deflected was the path we would take in dungeon.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Instead of his nose deflecting, he walked straight through the illusion and into the treasure room and artifact we were there to receive.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Retrieve* DM just laughed and laughed and then had us fight the dungeon boss in the hallway instead.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The wall next to the door is housing 15 red dragons who all have raging hardons for smartass mages. Make an endurance saving throw.

5 years ago | Likes 67 Dislikes 2

I'd pay to watch that.

5 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Oh sorry, I thought inginuity was a good thing. I'll hang back and let you railroad the party along your story.

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 15

Throwing disintegration at everything remotely challenging isn't ingenuity.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Really? If you have a locked door and the route brought the right tool, lockpicks, is that his moment to shine? So why shit all over the /1

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Oh, sorry. I thought story was a good thing. I'll hang back and let you derail a carefully thought-out adventure based on your whims.

5 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

There's no need to punish inginuity. Just give the wall the same plot armor. Or maybe just allow the players to do something clever.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Means nothing on saving throws. Only matters on an attack roll.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

This is a skill check not a saving throw. Though you are correct RAW natural 20 is only a "Critical" on an attack. On skill it's 20+mod

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Are you sure?" "Yes!" "...make a dex saving throw..."

5 years ago | Likes 116 Dislikes 2

Yup. I had tons of fun with that as DM and players enjoyed it. Also had a DM that would get pissy if you circumvented and would retaliate.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That’s a bad dm he should never stop people from having fun if it’s creative and possible let them do it or at least try
