Saving this post for posterity, hoping this video will actually come into existence.

Also Brad Boimler plays a giant gelatinous cube in this.

People have been doing it with the DOOM 2016 soundtrack. https://xcancel.com/liambrefberinn/status/2061984857794752662

The only thing that bugs me about this game is: It probably won't get released for PC!

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

You lost me at the Marvel Studios style gelatinous quips-on-a-pullstring cube. I love Jack Quaid. I love Deborah Ann Woll. I love God of War. This is going to be a trash fire of a story nobody asked for and reignite meaningless debates about video game writers and their genders. It also cheapens the loss of the past two games - could have had a prequel where kicks Thors ass and raises her child instead of James Gunning it. Categorically a bad move. It’ll be noteworthy for all the wrong reasons.

That’s Deborah Ann Woll 😍

Looks pretty good, but feels tad too silly and zany fornmy liking. Hope she gets cool valkyrie armor down the line

Wait wait wait, she fighting through hell? She's coming back, isn't she? That is fucking sick. Completely expected from her legends. Death cannot keep kratos, why would it stop her?

1 month ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

No, not hell. Sort of a weird realm between where outcasts and dead gods go when they accidentally slip through the cracks.

Gonna love if she has to deal with gods that Kratos has killed during his journey. "Oh Kratos murdered you? Time to get double murdered by his badass wife!"

1 month ago | Likes 80 Dislikes 1

I don't really understand how death works where she is now. Like, she's already dead, so what happens if you just let the demons things kill her again? I suppose that makes a convenient explanation for her respawning after a loss, but then what happens to the gods I assume she will kill there? Do they also respawn?

1 month ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

The Oni does mention that it's 'hard to die here,' so presumably there's something along those lines? Hard to say! I'm quite curious to find out more.

He's Jack Quaid. Son of Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan.

I have no beef with this game but the GoW concept overall; what does death even mean in these games narratively now? Kratos has died like 4 times and just rampaged out of hell. Laufey spawns in another dimension (need to watch the actual trailer) so if they die and get basically remade somewhere else... where's the stakes once we see that repeatedly?

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

pretty sure the story in laufey is something like, she died but instead of going where she was suppose to there is a wall stopping everyone from getting there. i dunno man. i am just excited for more of Santa Monica stuido combat systems.

It kinda reminds me of what happened after KH2 where suddenly everybody now has a keyblade. Other than that who gives AF that a woman is the MC

I just wish it had a different publisher I can't stand all the stupid things Sony keeps trying to do, they're very anti-consumer.

Sony: Let's axe Bluepoint to dispel any hopes for a Bloodborne remake. Let's also back bungie and doubledown on marathon! Oh, it's failing? It's PC players' fault! Let's take away Wolverine from them at the last second and make stuff exclusive again!

The combat reminds me of the first couple games on the PS2. That's a good thing! I don't like the overabundance of dialogue that makes it feel more like a Marvel film. Also, the pink tassels on the sword feel a little patronizing, when she was the original owner of the Leviathan axe.

...I'm a big fan of Jack Quaid, but did they really have to have him come in and do motion capture for a damn cube?

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 6

VA work is different. No complaint about having Jack do the voice.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Meh... why not? Gives the animators a tiny bit of a break and lets Quaid add his own little mannerisms to the character. Talent shows through even when you wouldn't expect it.

Also, it's fun for both Quaid and the audience. Adds a bit of whimsey to the "how it was made".

Similar vein as to why Disney hired Alan Tudyk to voice the chicken in Moana.

1 month ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

video game production costs have skyrocketed, sure they could save a few bucks by not hiring an a-list actor to come in and do motion capture for a cube.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

They pay a CFO a lot of money to worry about that stuff, my dude. You don't need to do it for them for free.

Don't get me wrong. If you want to bah humbug, Mr. Scrooge, don't let me stop you. The rest of us will enjoy the game a bit more knowing Quaid was wearing a PVC cube while hearing his lines.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My dude has never worked in a corporate environment. Tons of people who have no idea wtf they're doing have made it to that level.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've spent my whole career in corporate environments. Whether their particular finance department is competent is irrelevant to what I was trying to tell you:

Why are you worried about their expensing decisions when you're not even privy to their books or contracts? You think they're going to bankrupt themselves before the game launches with the Quaid Cube? Just enjoy the game, my guy! ;)

For all we know, they saved more on animation than they paid in the diff between PCap and voice-only.

I don't get the hate and pedantry surrounding this announcement. There are -several- Gods of War in this one. I mean, I'm about 90% sure the hate is because they're playing as Fey but I don't know how to reason with a goblin.

There's nothing to get, some people are angry because they don't know how to not be angry, and there's a few people mad that this invalidated a bit with kratos arc as op makes light of.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think it’s a little unfair to make it a male vs female protagonist issue. There have been 10 games and Kratos has always been the protagonist. It’d be the same as having a Tomb Raider game where you play as Lara’s husband.

But yes there are the incels who don’t want to play as a woman also.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

The male vs female protagonist issue is very real and crops up in basically EVERY game with a female protagonist. It actually makes it hard to discuss actual issues with a lot of games because the loudest people are obviously just upset that every protagonist isn't a 6'2" tall, white cis heterosexual man with a six-pack and a crew cut.

In the case of this game, I'd actually say it's fair for people to be tired of franchises getting a MCU-esque extended universe.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I could almost get being mad it's simply not Kratos, but I'm pretty sure there has been at least one Deimos game...

Same, Frey has beaten Thor in combat and Kratos himself said she fought beautifully. I am honestly excited for this because in the trailer it is showing that are expanding to other mythologies beyond the Greek and Norse pantheon. Plus watching Jack Quaid do mo cap in a giant cube is entertainment in itself.

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Well I have seen certain exactly same comments many times from different people already, hilarious. Though I guess some real people might just copy paste those because they can't come up with anything original.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The hate is that it's a female lead character. I've no issue with that and there's a God of War 6 reportedly in the works anyway.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can't wait. She is exactly who I would expect to be with Kratos.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The hate comes from two angles: hate for sidelining a male protag, and hate for millennial dialogue and anachronistic errors.

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I mean... The whole premis is bolted together from loosely remembered mythology! It's not like they're using historical records of real events... Jeez. Also, you aren't sidelining someone by making a game about someone else, even if it's in the same franchise. Dudes really gotta stop being so weak.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh, don't get me wrong! I don't have a dog in the fight in regards to the topics you mentioned. My main beef is with the dialogue since sarcastic millennial-ese has crept its way into so many of today's games and it's exhausting. The pedantic nitpick I have is that gelatinous cubes are something ripped out of D&D and not a part of any pantheon or ethos God of War touches upon (let alone a cube named "Frank"), which leads me to feel like this game was slapped together and not well thought out.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Kratos wasn't even the only god of war in the last God of War.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't have anything against the main character. Granted I never finished the second game so I know little of her but I don't see the problem. Am I hating the game? - Hardly. I do in fact hope it is a fun one, if it is not then nobody wins, so I am not hoping for a downfall or anything like that. I am a little disappointed in the presentation though, because, while I like the actor, the cube gives me too much Marvel quirky character vibe, not in a good way, and also sounds a little phoned in.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm so sad the discourse on the game got hijacked by incels and sexists. The game doesn't seem bad because the MC is a woman, it seems bad because of the god-awful writing, and now we can't even talk about that, because the sexism has overshadowed any other issue the game might have. The writing quality completely surprised me in GoW 1, because I have 0 faith in AAA writing atp, but it was actually decent. Then came ragnarok, and it got much, much worse. But this... this is a new kind of low.

1 month ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

People complaining about playing a female character do so because of the bad writing, it can feel like the main focus became "the message" when game franchise after game franchise change focus in newer games. People don't care if the main character is female, they care when it seems the character being female was the only thing "going for it"

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

Nah, a lot just care about playing a woman they can't wank to. They're okay with playing a woman if they can add it to the spank bank (see: Stellar Blade) but any woman that doesn't look like she's headed for a porn shoot will get shot down.

This is a seperate issue from those who genuinely care about poor writing.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

My guy, all of these people complain about games with female main characters before the game has ever released, and when it finally does release, they continue to complain without ever playing the game themselves.

Claiming they are bothered by bad writing is cope. They don't even know what the writing is like and they will never know. They don't care about the writing. That is just a thing they try to claim to pretend that they aren't sexist little incel freaks.

Probably helped that Nier: Automata was also an incredible game. But yeah, leaning into that appearance for 2B and the other female androids probably drew unwarranted hate from one group and extra interest from another... Also you end up playing as a male character for like more than half of the game anyway.

Can't have women be a strong, central character in a game. The little boys will be upset about that!

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Personally I feel like it detracts from her death to bring her back. I think Freya would've been a better candidate as the next protagonist.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It is not the fact that people are playing as a woman, it is the fact that they took the very beautiful Deborah Ann Woll and made her face look bad. AAA compagnies are alergic to that (star wars: outlaws’s kay, spider-man 2’s mary jane to name a few). As for how bad the story might be written, we’ll have to wait and see i think

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

It's a game about a woman and there's a very vocal minority of incels on the internet. That's all there is to it.

1 month ago | Likes 150 Dislikes 4

They get particularly vocal when it's regarding a series that traditionally has male power fantasy characters, and God of War is one of the OG intellectual properties that helped define the modern version of that trope. "How am I supposed to self insert as a badass that fixes all their problems with violence and fucks sluts with their giant cock?!" cry the basement dwelling neckbeards. Honestly it's inspiring how much better the writing and storytelling in GoW has gotten, considering the...

Also a valid enough reason lol

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's a little hilarious too, when you think about it. Samus is 40 this year and Lara is 30. Female protagonists have been a thing since the beginning of gaming. (Although, I don't know a solution to the "vocal incels" other than to laugh at them...)

1 month ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

Mrs. Pack-Man! (1982)

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

But those are old franchises that people grew up with before modern day manosohere anti-woke nonsense poisoned people's brains. Just like with Sarah connors and Ripley. They are used to those ones and they use them as an example while ignoring they are the very same thing they hate and cry about now days.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The difference with Lara and Samus is that they're eye candy and basically perform for the audience. Samus by stripping down after the game is finished and Lara having a lot of gratuitous butt shots for no particular reason. The games those incels hate are always the ones where the women actually look like normal people, or if they don't feature fanservice at every corner.

1 month ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

That's probably it, but even that explanation baffles me a bit. The grime of "her character was dead and cremated 5 minutes ago" doesn't do much to cover up the fact that Deborah Ann Woll is one of the most beautiful women who have ever lived.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I actually found it a little distracting to have this one completely recognizable real human in Ragnarok when the rest of the main cast was more fictional character designs. I don’t think that’s the complaint here though

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Oh, I’d wager there was a reason. It may be childish and sexist, but(t) there was a reason.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

With Metroid specifically it's also relevant that Nintendo *Deliberately* hid the fact that Samus wasn't a guy before the game released, so there wasn't an opportunity for the bigots to get mad before the game became popular.

1 month ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

And then the reveal of Samus being a woman only happened if you beat the whole game in 5 hours or less!

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Historically I'm not sure that was their real motivation for hiding it, back then it was still an original novelty to hide the characters gender and then reveal it, "you thought was man, but was actually woman!" The idea that they expected their to be bigots boycotting or getting mad about a woman protagonist wasn't a thing back then (sure their were bigots, but not the expectation of having bad press from it and having to get ahead of the reaction)

1 month ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I do. Some of the more vocal ones just don't like female characters in video games, for me it would be awesome to play as a badass female character. Tomb Raider, Horizon Zero Dawn, Metroid, all rank among my favorite games. But having a God of War game without the freaking God of War, seems disingenuous. Why even call it God of War when it is not about the God of War? It's like having a James Bond movie without James Bond.

1 month ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 8

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Kratos isn't (yet) the God of War for most of the first game, or at all during Sons of Sparta, Ascension, or Chains of Olympus, and he's not *the* "God of War" in 2018 or Ragnarok (until arguably the end of the latter).
Also, none of the James Bond movies have "James Bond" in the title, so that's a bit of a weird example.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Fair points, but in the first game he does become it and he's established as the God of War from then on. Sons of Sparta, Ascension and Chains of Olympus where all prequels to the original one telling the tale when is already sitting on the throne but looking back (I think). And 2018 "God of War" and Ragnarok are the sequels. I'll have to give you the James Bond point, that was the wrong example to use.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

I get what you saying, that the titular character basically is missing, but since they started mixing mythologies and it being canon that there are several God of Wars like Tyr, it would fit to show it from anothers perspective.

I guess the main gripe that it isnt about kratos, but i actually like that. Story is pretty depressing, all the shit that happened to kratos. This world is big enough to show other angles, imo

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That is indeed my main point. I don't care otherwise, hell it was fun playing with Atreus and Freya because they offered different play styles. But Kratos is the main character of the series and to me it would be weird to leave him out of the game and instead only focus on his late wive. And yeah it is pretty depressing if you read all of the lore of him in the series.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Why not enjoy a different god of war for once? Kratos may be the only one in Greek mythology but GoW has expanded pretty far beyond the greeks at this point. So why not play around with some of the many other gods of war from different mythologies?

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It is a part of the God of War franchise. The contents of the game are then further described by the name of the main character. That is a very flimsy point to make, especially if you are aware of the importance of Laufey in the story of Kratos and Atreus.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why? All of the games in the God of War franchise have been about Kratos, in Ragnarok you get to play for a bit as both Atreus and Freya deepening your understanding of those characters, but the main character was still Kratos the (former) God of War. Also my reply is to Tankjoe who doesn't understand the hate, I do and I explain why. Never did I state that I didn't like the character, but I get why people are upset.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I agree, they could have called it “Laufey: A God of War story” or something similar and no one would have minded

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

its the God of War universe, might be taking the title too literally if its being interpreted as he should always be the main controllable character in all games. shes his wife, her story runs parallel to his he does appear in the game. "disingenuous" would more describe something like MGS2 where fans didnt know about Raiden

1 month ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Kratos has actually been the God of War for all of 5 minutes in the entire series, if you were a true fan of the games you would have known that

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I've played all of them with the exception of Betrayal and Kratos becomes it in the first one, looks back on his story in the prequels. So I do know, the story has always been about Kratos, which was established as the God of War in the first game.

And if you would have read my replay properly you'll see that I'm not upset at all, but I do get why people are.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Sekhmet and Begtze, two other gods of war, right there in the trailer. By that logic half of Ragnarok doesn't count because you're playing as Atreus. You mental gymnast.

1 month ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 4

Is Sekhmet not he mother of the lion-headed war god, Maahes? Also Sekhmet is from the Egyptian panthology, Begtze is from Tibetan Buddhism. Both shouldn't exist among the Norse gods, and it was explained how Kratos ended up there. You play with both Atreus and Freya, which was refreshing game play, but the main character still is Kratos.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I also find it strange that they've decided to mix the afterlife of all of the different mythologies, even though all of them have their own version of it. I guess we'll have to see how they are going to stitch it in.

I have to say, the "bitter neckbeard" skill for Claude is pretty spot-on these days. This post is indistinguishable from one written by a pathetic, unfuckable chud.

Thank God it's a bot post, otherwise I'd have to feel bad for the useless sack of shit that thought stringing the above sequence of words together and putting them on public display was a good idea, and a viable opinion that others might share

Is that the new God of War heroine or something? I thought she was called Laufey. I mean its right there in the post ripped from the Nazi Social Media pic.

Sony is just lashing out at PC players. Lately more than half of their decisions have been bad ones. Axing Bluepoint (which means even less hope for a Bloodborne remake) and backing bungie instead, and doubling down on marathon, a game people wanted in a genre nobody asked for. They think people will abandon PC to buy a console for two or three games they release in a year. Exclusivity isn't going to be the mealticket they think it is. It isn't 2006 anymore.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Wolverine looks dope and I'll never get to play it :'(

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Don't fool yourself, console gamers are by far the vast majority of their users. PC makes up less than 15% and on top of that they don't get nearly as much of a cut of the game's sales on PC as they get through their own store.

It turns out it wasn't half their market. It wasn't even a third. Ragnarok in particular was only 6% of their total sales. https://www.gamesindustry.biz/sales-data-indicates-sonys-ps5-ports-are-increasingly-losing-audience-share-on-pc-but-only-because-of-release-timing Granted, maybe this would be different if they did same-day releases.

I mean, there's never a workd where Sony us going to allow their flagship games in a Microsoft console, and Steam has decided to allow it's platform to run on Microsoft consoles. It's silly, but shouldn't be even remotely a surprise that one corporation isn't in any hurry to hand their money makers to a competing corporation.

Even if you have a PC, if you have an AMD graphics card, you won’t be able to play it. God of War is one of the only games I ever had to refund on Steam because it would not run despite my GPU having the same or better stats than all the NVIDIA cards it supported.

I'm primarily a PC gamer, but we don't even come close to being half of Sony's market.

Which is ironic since it was SCEA- Sony computer entertainment of America, for a very long time

Especially now that PC Hardware is basically dead for all but the very well off.

Yeah, i can't see me replacing my ageing PC anytime soon and it can't run new AAA games, my PS5 plays them perfectly fine though. Ordinarily i'd grab a mid-high level PC every 5~ years for like $2500-$3000, but the same type of PC might cost me $5000-$6000 now, not a fucking hope in hell I'm spending that when i have my PS5 there.

Same, if any single component in my machine dies (aside from like the PSU or fans), I'm screwed. I'd be spending $2500 on just the RAM alone :/ I'm not getting a PS5 though as I despise what Sony has been doing lately and how anti-consumer they are.

As far as electrinics companies who are anti-consumer, Sony doesn't even crack the top 5.

Knowing Sony, they will take their sweet time with the PC port. Ragnarok for PC came almost 2 years after the PS version.

As a PS player who used to love the Fallout games, the publisher taking time and care when porting a game to another platform is not a bad thing.

True, but in Sony's case, that usually isn't the reason.

Sure, I get that it's about exclusivity, but are the ports shoddily done as well?

They aren't going to be done at all.

Sony's not putting single player games on pc anymore

they weren't putting single player games on pc back when Dad of War came out either.

Theyve flopped on that shit so many times. One thing remains constant, though. I don't care what game it is. I will never buy a console just to play it.

Even if PC hardware is like $5000 for machine now?

That's really not the same thing. Back then, they had not yet decided to put games on PC. They have since decided to *stop* putting games on PC.
The next XBox is rumored to be just a Windows PC, and Sony doesn't want their single-player games being on XBoxes. Also they saw that putting their games on PC wasn't driving an increase in hardware sales, which was the goal. I wouldn't expect them to come back to PC for a while.

and all it'll take for them to change their stance is if they think it's profitable to do so again

That's because Sony are morons and released years old games at full price on PC. I'm not spending full price on games that I already own on my PS4. I used to be a Playstation fan but given the price of everything, I've decided to stick to PC only going forward.
