I used to have a dog that hated everyone from one particular family, and only those people.
Slimewire
It's the dog's choice!
So many times owners say yes while the dog is clearly saying no. I tell my kids over and over—watch the dog's body language. I've shocked some owners by telling my kid to get away because not all owners recognize their dog's "no"

Where's that one post, about a guy who was so misogynistic that he supported an FtM co-worker wholeheartedly because "that's one less woman" or something

My sister’s old dog hated men, when we first met her she would not let me in the door… then we spent a weekend with her and she was all lovey-dovey after that!

We live on a street with a crack house on the corner. My great pyr will sit outside with us being loved on by all the kids and then her fur goes up and her ear prick and she forces herself in front of us with a low gutter Al growl as anyone walks past - only if they are headed to the drug house. She’s fine with weed smokers but meth and fentanyl etc she will rip their throats out if they come within 10 yards of us

I had a dog who wouldn't let (other) men pet him, -at all- and it was because a big buff dude beat the fuck out of him when he was a puppy before I rescued him and it took me forever to earn his trust. He REALLY hated men with beards. He weighed 230lbs and growled like a truck engine so it was pretty easy for people to accept 'no'. He was a chick magnet though.
ilovetraveler
Poor baby. My little girl was abandoned and let to die by a man, so she's very anxious around men.

I feel bad because parents around here are teaching their kids to ask before trying to pet a dog, but my dog is terrified of kids and I always have to say no even when he's fine with adults petting him. He's not a bad guy, he just has a dark past!
ClaudBalls
Did anyone else read "can I peg your dog" while scrolling too fast through the pages? No? Ok, me neither. asking for a friend
darkmyst30
I had a roommate who tried this shit on me with my own dog while I transitioned. "He doesn't like me. Clearly has an issue, but LOVES you. You're clearly not a woman.". Fuck TERFs
cwcat
I had a golden that absolutely loved everybody, old or young, male or female, if you had hands and could pet him he would love you, expect men wearing hats. You could literally be a stranger breaking into the house and he would just want pets, but he acted like he was going to maul any man wearing a hat
akafluffy
I've also seen a dog with the aversion to people in hats, the one I knew was abused and the guy always wore a hat, so the dog would just not be near anyone with a hat, and would not trust you if he saw you take a hat off.
avastmehearty
My old dog hated men on motorcycles and teens on skate boards. I mean HATED with a slavering rage. Could not take him on the multiuse trail around the park because he would bark and rage at the skate boards kids. He was well behaved otherwise, we think something happened before we got him
redpandabanana
He also didn’t like rats. -The kings New Vegas

Big dogs like me, often including ones that don't like most folks. Small dogs are even angrier with me than they are at the world in general, and often try to bite me.
It's a bit self-reinforcing now, because my expectation of how the interaction's gonna go influence's the dog
SigynRose
My old dog hated men including trans men, poor old guy. I miss him. RIP Linus

I've asked to pet a dog and had owners force the pet towards me when it clearly doesn't want to. Always kind of baffled me when I saw it.
DWolf
Scoop always preferred women (I was one of the few men she adored at the newspaper office). I don't know if it was because women found her & took her in or a guy abused her before tossing her out just weaned. She went home w/ me when printing & exterminator chemicals made her sick.
Enter GF Tina, who helped me move across town. Tina comforted scared Scoop w/ pets & treats while guys moved stuff. Scoop adored her until we came back from kayaking & napped. Scoop just stared at her on *OUR* bed. 1/
DWolf
She just sat by the bed and looked at Tina. Tina turned into "the side chick," and for a while, Scoop wouldn't get back into the bed when I was on it.
bridgebrain
I was at a hippy festival, and offered my hand to a dog in greeting who accepted and wanted pets. The owner got huffy and said "You're supposed to ask?!" and I was like "I did ask. The dog." I'm still vaguely baffled that this lady thought she was supposed to be involved in the transaction
GoodBrotherGrimm
Yeah, fuck that. Always ask the owner first. You can't "ask" the dog, you have zero idea of the temperament, beyond "he seems fine". The dog bites you, you've just killed it.

spookymormonhelldream
This is bullshit. Three people in a row who actually ask to pet the dog? I don't believe it
Eiladar
We've trained our girl to back away unless we give her a command word. She's cute and fluffy, but also strong as hell (Samoyed), so we didn't want to run the risk of her pouncing a kid thinking she was going to get cuddles.
Taliska
I now right... It boils my blood when people just let their kids tear up to and paw on peoples pets and service animals, then get all huffy when asked to back off... I always make a point of asking if i may pet...
spookymormonhelldream
My dog is generally great around people and kids, but she also plays really rough. If a kid comes up and tries to play all out with her, she's going to play like she does with me. She's a 50lb dog and I'm a 6ft 220lb man. We play hard. But she's terrific at taking cues starting slow. It just takes one kid to scream or cry because she "bit" (mouthed) them. Which is a totally normal way for dogs to play, but people panic
Taliska
I owned a dog that was a bit of a rescue case... she was a lab mix but had been kept very isolated her whole life until i got her, I had to teacher her how to play, and she was TERRIFIED of children, I assume she'd never met little kids until i started to walk and socialize her, and then people just charge up to her and try to grab her ears and tail.... oooooooooh boy....
ComicSansHumor
They're pretty good in these parts. And doggo signals pretty well by going up to people and sitting. She doesn't actually care or want pets from them, but we used to give her treats to make her nonreactive to people and animals so it stuck.
angryjeep
Ha I was wondering why it said "can I eat your dog" on the first one

I mean, that's a very valid reason to not let someone pet their dog
MuttMonkey
I had a dog that usually loved everyone. He went everywhere with me. One time he pulled back and growled when one girl reached for him.
'Why doesn't your dog like me?'
'IDK, he's a good judge of character?'
LuminoZero
At the last place I lived, this little old man had a young shitzu. We'd often cross paths on walks, and and first this little pup loved me. Loved stopping for pets.
Then, at some point during the pandemic, he decided that he no longer linked me. He'd bark and refuse to approach every time he saw me, no idea why. I wonder what I did to upset him so much?
elemcsere
I once had a similar thing. We rented a house in the forest, friend brought his dog and the dog liked me. Up until I went for a stack of wood for the fire, dog started to freak out seeing me carrying it and after that he hated me. He was from a shelter maybe some bad memory...it was sad as I really liked him.
barbarian818
FWIW, I've seen dogs do exactly that because someone got a dramatically different hair cut. And, if the old man became fearful of people getting close during COVID, the dog would quickly pick that up and go into guard mode around outsiders.
PhailRaptor
Were you wearing a mask whenever it happened? Sometimes it's really stupid stuff like that.
PlanckEraWasMyBestEra
Was it all the people you murdered during lockdown?
LuminoZero
Ah shit, that might be it.
MuttMonkey
Probably the fear of the man when someone got to close. The dog didn't understand but his master now saw everyone as a possible threat. And his job is to keep threats at bay.
It wasn't you. You were a victim of fear.
LuminoZero
I doubt this. The old man chastised the dog for being mean to me and seemed really bothered by it.
MuttMonkey
It's not a conscious thing. Covid made us all scared.
Gindipple
Took mine with me to dealership today, must have gotten 25 pets from strangers. Growled at one guy. Justt looked at him like sorry man, he don't seem to like you. His call.
DarkwingDuc
My dog hates men wearings hats. Doesn't matter if they take the hat off. I he sees them first in a hat, he remembers.
AnythingMuchShorter
He must have somehow come to associate Men Without Hats with Safety to have fun, perhaps even to dance.
JefftheIntern
My folks had a cat like that. That cat LOVED me for 20 years, but if I put on a hat, of any kind, she would run away and hide.
AgamemnonsMemes
"Oh you're the hat guy, you can't fool me"
StillWatersAreFullOfMonsters
10 years ago when I was 24 I worked at a dog groomers as a bather. One day this behemoth of a dog comes in, Tibetan, and it's just an overactive hyper boulder of fur. The groomer was trying to get it to stay still so she could trim up some excess fur. I walk past and this giant dog goes real quiet and cowers a little. She stopped me and asked me to stand next to her. I felt awful. I have no clue why it was so scared of me.
She gave me half her commission for "helping".

Always trust the pups, they know who’s friendly and who should be avoided.
Rockafella83
I have an English setter and I now understand why his temperament is described as « Gentleman by nature ». I never heard him growl once, literally.

He likes everyone, almost too friendly. That doesn’t mean he takes shit from other dogs tho, I saw him respond to two huskys that were picking on him at the same time at the dog park almost twice his size.. I was like, damn didn’t knew you had that inside you !
But still, he’s good boy’in hard !
tomalt
My dog hated anyone in a van. Pull up in a van next to us at the lights and she'd growl. If you were wearing the same sort of high vis look in a ute she was fine.
Isthe4thtimethecharm
My pitbull probably met more than 1000 people. Only two of them were not instantly her best friends. I definitely didn't trust one of those two people. I think the other just kind of surprised her.
IHaveGreatKittenRecipes
I have a crazy hypersocial cat, she adores *everyone* she ever meets. Except anyone in a toque! Ball caps are fine, weird hairpieces that look fake to a toddler are totally okay, but put on a fukin knit cap and she is DONE with you. So the time she saw another driver without a toque and immediately lost her shit, hissing and spitting and full alley cat arch with the puffed back, I locked the doors and parked somewhere else. Idk, maybe he was a chill dude, but she's a smart cat.
Mamaof2QTs
My handicapped kid got attacked in public by a dog wearing a service animal vest. She walks funny so the dog attacked. :(
VincitQuiSeVincit
your dog is probably onto something. anyone this little guy doesn't like is probably evil:

haha back browsing comments and I'm like hey wait that's my Skippy! :) Yea I guess he sensed something about that guy

I don't like him, I love him! Reminds me of a dachshund we had. Her name was Jules La La, and she was chaos brought to life. Now I have a Nugget.
