IDK, I once shot one round .50 DE, it was ok. It kicked, but it was kinda more like push rather than a punch. I am not very large too.
Maybe you did not have grip firm enough? That is essential for recoil management.

Buying one is really just to show off though. Nothing you can do with a .500 you can't do with a .460 that's tons more versatile.
Id buy the .460 every time. .45, .454, .460 all from one gun. Better ballistics with the pointy Horndy bullets, just all kinds of options.

I've shot Buffalo Bore loads through a modern .45-70. Super spicy compared to the normal loads.
