Also like, as a woman, my female role models growing up were women like Ripley, Sara Connor, etc these were women who were complete and well thought of characters with arcs. They were not caricatures of strong women.

Rey does not nothing to uplift young girls the way those two did for me. And I feel bad for anyone growing up with them as role models.

It was somewhat taken out of context and worded differently from what she meant, Jennifer Lawrence claiming something along the lines of being the first female action hero to carry a movie made me giggle. Obviously Terminator relied a lot on co-star Arnold but Linda carried that movie with her physique, actionscenes and actingquality. Same for 'Ripley'. And I (as a male who definitively noticed Weaver as Dana in GB) never thought of them as FEMALE stars at the time, just as bad-ass action stars.

Never understood that line. It might be science fiction for us, but it's not for them.

And then a powerful battlefleet ready for war turned and fled at her words.

11 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Whilst broadly acurratte it was much more what they signified, i.e a willingness to throw hands. Human ships just are not upto getting into a shooting match with the Minbari.

11 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A couple Omega-class Destroyers and their excorts are not a match for four Sharlins and a White Star. Running was the smart move.

EarthForce: "Do not force us to engage your ship!"
Delenn: "Why not?"

Colonel Samantha Carter from Stargate SG-1 is calling.

Much as I love her, I think Aeryn Sun of Farscape might be moreso. Then again, she didn't blow up a sun.

"Ya know, you blow up one sun, and suddenly everyone expects you to walk on water." - Colonel Carter.

11 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Don't. You're too young to experience that level of pain.

There's only one thing wrong with that. The exclamation point. Delenn didn't shout when she gave that threat. She didn't need to.

11 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

3 Minbari war cruisers is all the punctuation you ever need.

Ivanova and Lyta also did just fine in the badassery department. For its time B5 had some of the best leading lady characters.

Only Carter (SG-1) and Kira (DS-9) came close.

I had such a crush on Lyta back then. I still do now, but I did then, too.

Absolutely fucking insane that the darkside, Palpatine won in the end. All the Jedi have been killed. So many dead. All the teachings lost. & then some unworthy imposter pilfers the Skywalker name.

*writer's pet. Mary Sues are author avatars.

11 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Not necessarily. A lot of them are, but a lot of others aren't.

11 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Ah, the definition has broadened since I last read about it. Makes sense because that difference isn't very relevant to the end result.

11 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think you just read a narrower definition than the standard. Its meant that since like the 60s when the original Mary Sue was created.

11 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sorry you weren't forwarded the memo. Since about 2004, "Mary Sue" has actually meant "any character I don't like."

I am Susan Ivanova. Commander. Daughter of Andre and Sophie Ivanov. I am the right hand of vengeance and the boot that is going to kick your sorry ass all the way back to Earth, sweetheart! I am death incarnate, and the last living thing that you will ever see. God sent me.

Remember when she turned human, and didn't know how hair works... So she and Ivanova stayed up all night doing each other's hair

11 months ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

I never did understand her hair. Does it just disappear into the bone? Is it cut short up top but arranged to look like it goes through the bone?

11 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's such a great detail because of course she had no idea how hair works!

Babylon 5 in general has some of the best written characters ive ever had the pleasure of watching, and i wanted so much to be a badass like Delenn or Ivanova.

11 months ago | Likes 139 Dislikes 0

I liked Bab 5 a lot, but as far as I'm concerned it's spin off Crusade was even better, and the characters were every bit as good, but Galen is by far my favourite. One line I've always especially liked, the Captain says to him 'You hold a lot of grudges don't you?', Galen - 'No, not at all, I don't have a single living enemy, not even one!'

11 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I like how they're not just flawless paragons, they also have their own flaws and struggles. Delenn was straight up brutal during the Earth-Minbari War.

11 months ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

It was her vote that lead to war. She's the one who demanded that every last human be killed.

11 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

She saw her mentor be killed and lost it, only coming around when she saw where the minbari souls were going

11 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Absolutely. What I said is still true. And shes still a great character.

11 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

11 months ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

And then so many of them had actual character arcs and development that influenced and interacted with each other. Prime example Londo and G'Kar, with the acting lending it so much quality.

11 months ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 0

What happens when you put JMS in a room with Harlan Ellison and force them to be civil for 10 minutes.

11 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I wish you a hearty Londo/G’Kar/Bashir/Garek slashfic

11 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Now that would be... fascinating.

11 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Londo's... development... sigh. :P

11 months ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

His fate was sealed, that's the point. The end result with G'Kar and his people and Vir was worth it.

11 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I mean, yeah.....but Vir's!

11 months ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

When Vir started out I couldn't help but think of him as "Space Flounder" but his character underwent some pretty amazing development and ended up kicking plenty of ass.

11 months ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

It parallel's the actor in a sense as well, as he really grew into the role with more confidence as the seasons went by.

11 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Iirc there’s only two alien movies…..

11 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Indeed the supposed third and fourth ones were nothing more than cryosleep sickness induced nightmares. When Ripley fully woke up she took the girl and looked after Hicks because of those acid burns with help from Bishop after getting him mostly back in working order.

11 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

(I dont' care if that's not what happens, Ripley deserves a happy ending god dammit)

11 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yea. Love it.

11 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Honestly the Alien movies are capitalism propaganda in disguise. On the one hand portray banal evil, but on the other they show over and over that the "right people" can only prosper if everyone else suffers/dies.

11 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

You should checkout the script that Gibson wrote about Hicks and Newt getting to a corporate outpost. It got turned into a comic and audioplay if those are more your taste.

11 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wasn't Weyland-Yutani - the corporation - literally the bigger villain in the first three movies?

11 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Propaganda shows a good viewpoint on whatever they're trying to promote...if you came away from the alien movies feeling like weylend-yutani were the good guys...we did not see the same scenes...it was clear they were the bad guys, even more than the xenomorphs...because they were trying to sacrifice human life for the chance to make more money on a destructive resource they had no solid info on...for the profits...this was about the dangers of capatalism...not promoting it

11 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Good thing there are only two Alien movies and then an incessant parade of waffle. Although the most recent one was pretty good.

11 months ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Alien Earth has been very entertaining so far.

11 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Which one? I’ll give it a try.

11 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Alien Romulus is like 2/3rds of a really good movie. Once it succumbs to winks and callbacks to the other movies in the series and an instant badass is found my brain switched off entirely.

11 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Romulus. Came out last year. They're trying to get back to the "small ensemble cast desperately fighting aliens in a hopeless situation" roots. It'll never be what Aliens was because having the plot set up by Alien and Weaver as the protagonist is unbeatable, but as an alien action flick it was fun and had great moments and was nothing like whatever the fuck Prometheus and Covenant were trying to do.

11 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I still have yet to watch it...I started, and then it spit out musk's wet dream of increasing interest on the debt owed to work...and I mentally shut down...couldn't go beyond that...it's probably just a hiccup in the movie...but i can still see that happening now

11 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I quite like how Alien: Earth conveniently sidesteps those two and still manages to not negate the first two movies. Well not yet at least, there's still three episodes.

11 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That last sentence alone sold me. Thanks for the info! I’ll check it out. Yea aliens is my favourite. And the remake was nice. It just added 30s or so to each scene. Nothing to ruin it.
