wow. What are airlines thinking? They're already facing a looming and gigantic pilot shortage. Pilots are aging out, and not being replaced, because the cost to learn to become a pilot is so high, and not sufficiently recompensed in subsequent pay unless you become captain on long distance flights.

If I were a pilot, I'd strike to prevent having to use Pearson. It's a fucking hole of an airport. Surly staff, shit food, the nastiest customs people in Canada, and impossible to navigate. I'd rather fly through Kandahar than Pearson.

The issue was massive pilot retirement during COVID. They're compensated and pensioned well enough that many took early retirement options in their contracts. As a result, so many new pilots are needed that new pilots are starting at wages that are pissing off people who have more years in. And LOTS of new pilots are playing career musical chairs for their preferred compensation vs work / life balance ratio.

Career musical chairs is the norm for all employment and has been for decades. Companies stopped being loyal to employees back in the 60s. You should always be looking for something better and moving on when you find it if your current employer won't match.

You would be surprised. Flight attendants make more than pilots for the first few years. Specifically at AC, not sure about other airlines.

My understanding is that flight attendants don't get paid unless the door is closed. Anything they do before or after that is unpaid labor.

I think that's the case for most of the crew. Paid per flight. If the airline fucks up and a flight gets canceled, fuck you they don't get paid.

It's when the parking brake is disengaged/engaged. They could sit there with the door closed for a hour but paid 0 if the brake is engaged.

That's basically true of pilots as well. They're paid per flight hour. There is a per diem hourly pay as well, but it's far below minimum wage. Like, $2/hr.

The few times I have flown. I am always polite to the flight attendants. Maybe I am just weird? Even had one give me extra snacks b/c I was nice to her. Im like, I am just nice and polite to mostly everyone. (Except people who scream at retail/fast food/ect, then it is Baltimore ilikebirbs comes out)

It's not the pilots in the wrong. The bailout money wasn't given to the pilots. They weren't paid during the covid time either. They just didn't work or get paid. The airlines kept the money and now choose to underpay pilots. #perspective

The value of buying is largely in the write off in depreciation, which for these fleets is significant. Why do I suspect you would be angry if the airlines tax burden goes to zero because of this. It’s how most of the news stories you hear about it happens.

Fucked up to say but fines dont work, any amount of jail time does not work, they do not have any conscious and feel they cannot be brought to account. Next one that tries buybacks after a tax payer bailout, either the employees get the benefit (in turn we all benefit from better service/happier employees) or fucking line them up an bring out the steamroller. Nothing else has worked, you cannot reason with greed and this insanity has gone on for too long unchecked.

The bail outs in 08 resulted in the government not only getting all of its money back, but turning a profit on the bailout. The bailout wasn't just handing out money, the government gained a vested interest in the companies and turned a profit on that. The bailout prevented americans from losing their jobs and likely prevented a total catastrophic economic collapse, while also TURNING A PROFIT. So can we not frowny face the bailout?

Also, they don't owe us cheap cars, if we want cheap cars, talk to your congress critter about how stupid it is you HAVE to go to a third party dealership. And how stupid it is you live in a country where you 100% NEED a car to get around and are therefore a captive audience for car dealerships - you have no choice but to give them money. Cars are expensive because the US has stupid city design and stupid laws. Not because of a bailout.
