Good luck my friend.

You're doing fine! Remember, a lapse doesn't mean you have to restart from nothing, you just have to restart from where you were. You progress autosaves every time you fall asleep.

Cutting back is excellent progress.

Well done holding yourself to account. You've made huge improvements since you started. Strength to you as you continue your journey.

Very good work. All honesty, even doing this, charting it out and keeping that chart up for as long as you have is utterly impossible for some. You've got this. Keep it up and you will have done it already.

Doing great op!! One day at a time ❤️

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

confused. Mark is how many you drink or how many you didn't drink? tip: calculate how much each mark would cost you. Add them up to see how much richer you would be if you don't drink at all.

I am so fucking angry and tired and anxious. How do you guys deal with the negative thoughts? Sports, tea and meditation helps but not enough. I can't afford a real detox time out. This is so fucking hard.

I love habit changing via scrap paper

Nice work

Personal accountability is a great first step- good luck!

I was never a blackout type of drinker, but my first and best move was just to stop keeping any alcohol at home. If I didn't have it easy to access, I was a helluva lot less likely to drink any. Even this past weekend, I wanted a drink so goddamn bad.... But I didn't want to have to go out to the nearest liquor store to get it. Being somewhat antisocial, working to exhaustion, and living miles from a proper liquor store has its benefits sometimes. I settled for a cold drink of water.

Yes, just the honesty being shown above is a big step.

3 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Progress is progress. You don't have to be perfect, just better.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well done! I’m sticking to weekends as a way to cut back, easier for me than just saying no more…which would be a lot harder

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I use a free app called ‘I Am Sober’, check it out. I’m not going full sober, literally drinking a beer right now, but it helps me keep track and work on limiting my intake.

3 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 0

It’s a great app, seeing the calories and money I’ve saved is huge for me

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Just wish there was a way to add friends and such to hold each other accountable

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Good luck! In my case I decided that I had drank the amount a normal person drinks in 50 lifetimes over the course of 20 years and just like that I quit. I asked a psychiatrist for sleeping pills because insomnia was the worst part of quitting for me (the same pills help with the mild shakes)

@op

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Legit question, how do you work? 16 drinks by 4pm?

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's when he starts drinking, 4pm TO pass out, so I assume he drank that many till he passed out few hours later

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I’m trying the same method hope it works out for the both of us stay strong

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Great work, @op. I use the “I am sober” app. It helped me control my alcoholism; I found it helpful to save my pledge not to drink until I had cravings. Then I would read my reasons for not drinking to reinforce my decision and make my pledge.

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Thisbis a good idea. Imma gonna try it

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

keep trying, i did it, the same way

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I use to do a similar alcohol tally sheet that forced me to drink a glass of water with every unit of booze, mine was specifically to dodge a hangover but it worked in reducing how much I drank over a night too

Alcoholics (myself included) always say "progress not perfection." Your progress is good and you should feel good!

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

big wins! this seems like a great idea

I recently had surgery, so I've just been having 1 drink a night for the past 3 weeks. Hopefully this shitty situation will allow me to cut back so I don't drink every day.

3 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 2

No one dies it alone. Set up a support system, both prof & civilian. If it was easy far more wb doing it on their own...but it is not.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Time to go a day without one! You can do it!

3 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I will soon, I wanted to make sure I had a long taper so I could avoid any dangerous withdrawal symptoms, especially after surgery. I had severe anxiety after surgery too, so I needed something to help keep me calm. Thanks!

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

One drink a day is at least within the realm of "not overdoing it". When you can go a day here and there without one, and then eventually more days without than with, it'll be extra awesome, but for now, I'm still proud of you!

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

In case you miss drinking beer, I can advise you the Clausthaler alcohol free beers (we’ll below 0.5 percent(

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Athletic Brewing is indistinguishable from alcoholic beer, to the point I've had a phantom buzz from it.

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Do they sell it with normal beer? I wanted to try some but I never know where to look

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They sell it at grocery stores.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I get it at my regular liquor store. I'm not sober, but I do find myself drinking it rather than alcohol more often than not.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

One thing that helped me in the past was telling myself "you only have to make it until you fall asleep tonight" and not focusing on the idea of forever or long term. This looks great OP, I wish you the best with it.

??? It looks like lots of heavy drinking days w blackouts in bn.... Find new activities/hobbies & new friends who don't drink. Utilize AA, get a sponsor. Eat healthy; cut out as much sugar as possible (booze is full of it!) & take B vitamins & D. Exercise daily. Etc.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

When i quit smoking, it was 15min. "If i can make it through the next 15min, i can make it through the 15 after that." That went on for 4 days, then switched to "i was ok yesterday, ill be ok today." Then weeks turned to months, turned to 10years.

The oblivion of sleep is also key to surviving depression. Greet every morning with an “Aw, fuck” then exist until the next sleep. Do not, and I cannot stress this enough, allow any emotion to manifest during these waking hours; they can get unruly. Should anyone ask how you are, appropriate responses include “fine,” “aces,” and “livin’ the dream.” Repeat until there are no more mornings.

Just a glorious day in the corp…

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Distraction helped me. Get a craving when I usually drank? Change what I was doing. If playing a game, go read, or listen to music, or wank, or whatever, just do a different thing. It really did work, was a method my therapist (cognitive behavior therapy, she had a focus in addiction+mental illness (depression, anxiety etc for me)). Good luck, OP

I hail from a family of alcoholics. I started my drinking career by establishing a set of rules. Rule 1: never drink alone. Rule 2: never drink to bury feelings Rule 3.: for every drink, have a glass of water. Rule 4: stop drinking 2 hours before you plan to leave. I dont get hangovers and i am not dependent on the booze. I like that you chose moderation over abstinence. Im sure abstinence worls for some but i feel that cutting it all out males it so much worse when you eventually relapse.

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Man, I'm struggling with this too. Man, its nice at the end of the day to just zone tf out, but I have a wife and kids and she's already giving me the "quit or I'm out" talks. I mean FUCK! I quit smoking bud in 1 day. Easy, cold turkey. But this... not so easy man.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I know smoking isn't the same, but that is what helped me quit smoking. I didn't think of myself as someone quitting who could fail, I started thinking of myself as a former smoker who might stumble. Once I started thinking like that, I never did stumble.

3 years ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 0

I am the embodiment of absent willpower. I stopped smoking july 2014 thanks to vaping.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Significantly less bad for you i think. I just learned about nicotine toothpicks they sell to help people quit vaping

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks for the advice.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I wish someone had given me this advice when I quit smoking. I was trying so hard to go cold turkey, I didn't succeed at quitting until I learned to forgive myself for stumbling, rather than feeling like I failed again

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I started quitting today. I’ll give that a try

3 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

It's hard but it is one of the best decisions you'll ever make IMO. Chantix/bupropion definitely helped me but might not fit everyone

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Best of luck. Quitting was hands down one of the best decisions I've ever made. Haven't regretted it for a second. Any time you're feeling the urge, just remember that for you now, these will be the last times you ever feel that. If you had kept smoking, you'd feel that every time you couldn't smoke for the rest of your life.

3 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

If it helps, you can always try to use procrastination to help you quit. Leverage your inner do-it-tomorrow.

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

This is beautiful advice.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Good luck friendo! I too am struggling with this issue. Trying, but I go so many hours and end up vomiting and dry heaving. Have the shakes. You can do it!

3 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 1

You needs prof help in-house & meds, my friend.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is a medical condition now, please don't cold turkey! Cutting back and pacing yourself is a great start, but like the others said, there is medication and any doctor will be happy to get it for you. This is not like other drugs, you can't just sweat it out. Please contact a professional.

3 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

You got this too Hellstorm99 you are stronger for trying to better yourself. I wish you all the best.

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Thank You. Just wish it over

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I should've said first - I'm really proud of you. I don't know you, but the fact that you've already pushed so hard you got sick (not that I want you to do that again) means you have a very strong will and I think you're gonna be on the other side before you know it. We're all pulling for you! You don't have to do this alone, reach out to as many sources as you can. You deserve to feel better

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you, but… self destruction.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Honestly, I hear you. And you won't always be able to ask for help, or even make the best choice. But what you've already done for yourself is amazing! Because this isn't something you can think your way out of. This is a disease. You can't will yourself not to have a broken arm. Doesn't matter why the arm broke, you still gotta fix it. There's lots of stuff online (not just AA) if you dont want to talk to your friends. Make that Dr's appt. That's all you gotta do right now. Good luck!

If u hav benzodiazepines rx that helps w withdrawal

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Will lorazepam work?

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yup-but do not drink alcohol with this in your system

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That is one that is prescribed for alcohol withdrawals. You shouldn't drink if you take it though, it'll help you sleep until the withdrawals are gone and help overall. Take thiamine (B1) you can get that in a B complex over the counter, that'll help protect your brain as you get through the withdrawals. It sucks but if you can get through the day and get some sleep it only gets better. (I am not a doctor, I just have experience)

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

So much coughing. Feels like I have fur on my tongue. Body hurts.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How long has it been since your last drink? Was it over 5% abv? There's a community on reddit specifically for stopping drinking https://www.reddit.com/r/stopdrinking/ if anything they can give you tips I don't know and give you some motivation.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Careful not to get another addiction though, those can be just as bad.

3 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Exactly. A medication meant for managing withdrawal under md supervision is the safer route. Like Vivitrol or naltrexone until you’re ready to wean off.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A psychiatrist can prescribe gabapentin for that

3 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 2

No, I'm an rn and gabapentin is absolutely not what you need. Detox with a doc. Sounds line you need an ativan taper or similar. Or start by slowly decreasing your intake. Please be careful

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also b complex and a prenatal multivitamin

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also had the same problem and would drink beers at work to avoid the shakes. Going sober for just a couple of days makes a world of difference

3 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Going cold turkey can also kill people. Do this with under a doctor's watch please

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Good nutritious foods help, too. Cut sugars!!!

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why cut sigars?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*Sugars?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What dies cutting sugar effect?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Alcohol contains a lot of sugars. So do many foods today. Cut it out--not easy!--and most folks will feel significantly better & drop weight without even really trying. Your labs #s will improve. Eat cleanly & it will all work together to cleanse & detox the body, which has paid a deep price for all the drinking. It's not a simple, oh I'll cut back situation. -->It a DETOX & process!

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cutting sugars is going to be a tough sell for someone quitting alcohol, the turbo version of sugar (ethanol).

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

YES IT IS. But it's a necessary part of the process. We're talking ADDICTION here. And a major DETOX wb required. Under supervision. It's not something one can easily do alone. Nor is that advised.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Precisely. That's why it's SO IMPORTANT. And why lots of prof help is needed to stay on track & accountable to someone & under a Drs supv while doing it! It's a big ongoing physical, mental, emotional challenge/roller coaster that no one sh try alone.
