Sheriffs are elected, police are not. Sheriffs were the original law enforcement system in the US. Police forces have gradually supplanted them, but many places in the US still have both.

I was enrolled in two classes (government & US history) in the summer session, small group, round-table style in the summer back-to-back. A few other students were with me in both. The result of an objective education is always a net positive. My AP history teacher pointed out what was missing in our textbooks and to take history with a grain of salt. I very much enjoyed her class. But, it was weird discussing 9/11 the day after it happened. We were already taught that history was violent and written by the victors. But, what we saw actually happened. The number of people who believe something they see is a hoax has exponentially risen (like Covid).

I don't understand this comment. If people are copying and pasting content, especially if it's significant in quantity, sure! If you aren't publishing anything, what plagiarism? If I copied from a textbook in school and turned it in, that was plagiarism; I wasn't plagiarizing by reading from the book and storing it in my brain. ngl this is largely solved by asking it for sources and to doublecheck itself, good prompt management makes shit a lot more accurate. AI isn't perfect, but the time saved for me is invaluable

I use it, but have started seeing ChatGPT-sites on top, one to three oddly specific sites of NONSENSE about an obscure topic. I googled the etymology of a surname and got FIVE obviously crap sites made by AI. Somehow the robots are making a bajillion sites and just... flooding the Internet with vague-sounding crap. I hate this future.

If you insist on using Google? Firefox, a good adblocker, and using very specific searches is the best way to survive. If you don't need recent information, telling Google to show stuff from before 2020-ish will also work wonders, particularly if you want to avoid AI slop in Image Searches.

The AI overview isn't the biggest problem with Google search these days. The problem is that the search results are chock full of worthless AI generated pages that are pure SEO bait. I can ignore the "AI summary" header, but I can't go anything with the two pages of completely worthless results before anything useful shows up.

I like the AI Overview… I feel like it does a good job isolating the shit from the good stuff.
But then again, I like AI itself for actually learning anything. People think I'm crazy, but I think it's great for text output as long as you're not getting images or generating other content to profit off of. I'm skeptical about using it for writing unless you have specific grammar questions, as it'll eventually strip your ability to write without it.

I was told I was imagining things when I told people google had been on a SHARP decline since ~2015. It used to be ELITE at knowing what you were asking it, to the point you could specify date ranges a la "Which country imported the 3rd most coffee per capita between 1974 and 1983?" and it'd just casually spit out "France" with a fully cited economic study wherein France actually waffled between 2nd and 5th during that time frame, but it indeed levels out to 3rd when you do the math yourself.

My understanding is (i havent fact checked this personally to say it confidently, perhaps others have) that google hired a guy who basically said "if you give worse results people will stay around longer/come back more often". Google was so efficient with no competition, it was basically true. But capitalism hates a steady profit from a quality service. It must always be higher than before.

Yup. And AI has already started its enshittification cycle, but itll get FAR FAR worse. Currently, Fo my use cases, I get the best results with a subscription to one of the major AI services (for text), Ive tried a locally installed model, but even with a good computer I could run a high quality enough model locally. I think in the future Ill be running open source models in the cloud to avoid enshittification.

Not the person you were asking mind, but my main issues have always been it’s forced proliferation in search of a solution we already had a good answer to, and end-users relying on it as a font of truth when it can barely link it’s sources correctly most days. Other than that, it’s just another tool, used poorly and/or inefficiently.

Chat GPT pretty much does what I can already do with a functional search engine and some solid search terms. I like it for things like breaking down unit topics into a scope and sequence for teaching, but even then I still have to do so much adjusting that it’s barely worth the time.

It is odd to me how often people can't articulate why they dislike it, but I suppose asking from that angle would indeed be bad faith. But yes, if someone likes something because it's natural to them, there will be heaps of genuine confusion on why seemingly everyone else (not in real life, but certainly on here) dislikes it, which will push them to ask.

Chatgpt is a text model, not an information base. It creates its answers based on the info it's been fed, and if that information is not in its base, it just makes stuff up. My problem isn't necessary with chatgpt itself (apart from the ethical and environmental stuff) but how uncritically people use it.
Have chatgpt help you create text, but ask for sources. The "info" it gives you is more often than not (in my field of work) just made up bs

You know, i felt the same way about a year ago or more. Now, on the paid version, it's way better! I check the links on my sources all the time and they pretty much always work now.
Treat it like a very, very smart, knowledgeable person that you are asking a question of who maybe hasn't thought about this topic in awhile. They may misremember sometimes, but the amount you can trust it is getting better and better all the time. Just stay critical.
