Imma start here.
I usually only post about bugs but this has been on my mind lately. There have been some lists on imgur along the lines of "rap for people that don't like rap" and the like, and they usually leave something to be desired. For one, white boy comedy rappers are not something I would wish on my worst enemy. They are vile and about as funny as Big Bang Theory (same demographic?), but I digress. The comments are usually really lively and full of great suggestions, so there seems to be a good size community here of people that like hip hop. When people say they hate rap, they are probably referring to what's on the radio, which is a shitty and uninviting tip to an otherwise great iceberg. I just wanted to throw out some of my favorite artists for anyone interested in getting into hip hop, and check out any that pop up in the comments. They're not all particularly underground by any means, just my favorites. I'll throw in a link to a song for each one.
I don't need to go into any detail about how good Kendrick Lamar is. It goes without saying. I'm guessing most people have already heard him, but I'm including him just in case you've been under a rock for the last few years. I think his music is one of the best ways to dive into hip hop. His albums are really worth a listen all the way through in sequence.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Psx6MYIfZs4
MF Doom
If you take nothing else away from this post, just know that MF Doom is the fucking best. Off the top of my head, I can't think of another living rapper that has as much respect as he does.
Meat Grinder-off of Madvillainy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8Ru8d0l_fU
J Cole
One of the most prominent up-and-coming artists. His last album is really solid and worth a listen all the way through.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2B5clYLtOc
Talib Kweli
A little shiver goes down my spine when people tell me I need to listen to Macklemore because he raps about important things, as if this is revolutionary. If socially charged music is your jam, then this is your guy along with Mos Def.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MX4xELkqrD4
Mos Def
Probably one of my favorite rappers. Mos Def and Talib Kweli used to work together a lot, and are both really great to listen to when you're feeling angry at the world.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFL0e24GeYg
Earl Sweatshirt
Member of Odd Future. His most recent album is called I Don't Like Shit, I Don't Go Outside, which is probably my favorite album title of all time.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32v8yZ5hrh0
Vince Staples
Not a member but affiliated with Odd Future (who is also worth a listen).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mb6Jc4juSF8
Schoolboy Q
More on the mainstream end of the spectrum, but still great.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3AIfBksf_g
Lemme see your favorites, Imgur!
Edit: Shit, if I knew this would get a big response I woulda put more effort into making the list longer. Some really good mentions in the comments. Some I haven't heard of, so thanks!
yeahokayik

As someone who doesn't usually like hip-hop, I really like Tribe. Blackalicious is also pretty good in my book.
CptBattleship
Low End Theory is what got me into hip-hop, so good.

Urrmuhhgerdbecky

There we go. First comment I've found mentioning Kendrick
LearningOnImgur
Kendrick is already pretty popular, so I don't know if it's even really necessary to mention him
pacey5714
You are right, he is really popular. I guess I mentioned him because of how he expresses his struggles about escaping the life he grew up in
Magiimice
Mentioned in OP
RavennaMagnus
Yeah I realised after I replied here that I didn't read the introduction + with no heading for Kendrick like the other artists I missed him
Harb0
Are you me? Probably the exact same three I would've recommended, possibly together with J. Cole.
pacey5714
I really like his song don't save her. Do you have any other recommendations?
Harb0
"Don't save her" is pretty similar to "No role modelz" from his newest album, so you might want to check that one out.
pacey5714
No role models was the song...damn it lol

TPaB was great but untitled unmastered was GREAT. People starting jcole go straight to Love Yourz. Tribe & De La Soul and it's a great list!
DogInBoots
Guess I'll have to check out J Cole
yourfriendlyneighbourhoodblackman
I know it's your opinion and all but Untitled has nothing on TPAB.Although it was really good they were just songs that didn't make the cut.
hellafyno
Yeah I would agree-I just think untitled could have used some more work, been incorporated properly, and have made tpab a double album.
Saradamasara999
I don't think you really understand what the untitled album was supposed to be. It's all the songs that didn't make it on to tpab. (1)
Saradamasara999
K dot had no reason to improve the tracks, since they had no effect on the album. They are supposed to be unmastered, and unfinished.
hellafyno
Dude I got that. I'm just saying if it were me, I would've considered going all out for it, because they were from the same sessions.
gettinGiggityWithIt
TPAB had way better songs. J just liked the flow and rawness of UU better. Was like chilling in the studio w kdot watching him work. Real
gettinGiggityWithIt
And Aesop Rock. Crazy wordsmith.
HellaciousHaze
Have you listened to any Rittz? Or Yelawolf?
gettinGiggityWithIt
Love Rittz, haven't listened to Yelawolf. I'll check him out today.

Wu-Tang, especially GZA, the album Liquid Swords in particular. Hieroglyphics and anything Del the Funky Homosapien like Deltron 3030
PuppysGotPeopleToBarkAtAndThingsToSniff
Honestly I know most people only know "think differently" but I think meets the indie culture is one of the best albums ever made
lazerhosen
I can't really tell who/what you're talking about due to lack of proper punctuation or intro, so I'm going to google some of your phrases.
PuppysGotPeopleToBarkAtAndThingsToSniff
Lol sorry about that, trying to speak in 140 characters. Wu-Tang Meets the indie culture volume 1 is the album I'm addressing
SmurfEggs
Delton muthafuking 3030 hell yes!!
LearningOnImgur
Wutang yes, but if we're going to single someone out I'd say method man. Especially meth and red on "blackout!". One of my favorite albums
lazerhosen
As fun and diverse as Method Man is, I was going from personal taste. I enjoy hearing RZA or Ghostface's raps more than Method. Opinions.
howcaniconfinemyselftoausername
Everyone's different in Wu-Tang and everyone brings their own style, which is what makes them great, but I'd say GZA& I-Deckarebestlyricists
lazerhosen
That and I was trying to use an example of what many consider to be a quintessential Wu-Tang artist album.
woefullylucid
I liked this post alot, but no Aesop Rock?

Needs more Sandpeople too

I'm so glad I don't see a comment that says "Don't you mean A$AP Rocky?!" Also, Atmosphere, and Sage Francis for kind of spoken word.

Aesop is awesome. Shoulda made the list longer.

PlesiosaurWithElementsOfAnIdeaOfTheLochNessMonsterBoy
Actually more surprised you didn't include the literal father of modern rap, Rakim
letsgotothegooddennys
Made this list before bed not thinking anyone would look at it. I have regrets. Glad the comments are picking up my slack.
lazerhosen
Known to have, by far, the widest range of vocabulary of any MC. Most members of Wu-Tang scored pretty high as well.
KtotheUZGandaUn
More than Shakespeare
woefullylucid
Wasn't dmx on that list for the lowest vocabulary?
KtotheUZGandaUn
Yeah, but his appeal is mostly due to his performance and delivery
Canyouchangeyourusername
And atmosphere, Murs or half dozen?
IAmMELONLORRD
Atmosphere + Grieves all the way
daintymissdraven
THANK GOD was wondering how far down id have to go to see atmosphere or murs (or felt). Seriously, Murs is my absolute number one.

Lil Wayne's verse on no problem was fire tho
AThugThatNeedsAHug
Wayne went off. Sounded like 06-08 Wayne. Drought 3 type shit
AThugThatNeedsAHug
What do you mean despite who is on some tracks? Everyone who was featured is fantastic.
ElClimax
Lil yachty, young thug and 2 chains, lil Wayne was actually pretty good on his verse.
AThugThatNeedsAHug
What about them? You don't like any of them? Okay let me guess you think the only good rap is "lyrical" and political. Foh
ElClimax
Yes, I don't like rappers like young thug or lil yachty. I prefer lyrical, good flow and a decent beat.
whythefuckamidoingthis
I agree everyone's verses on the album were worst case scenario listenable
kingloofa455
Female harmony on Same Drugs is beautiful though.
kingloofa455
Yachty and Young Thug both sounded like they didn't even bother to listen to the track first they just randomly spit.
AThugThatNeedsAHug
Yachty snapped tho ???????
whythefuckamidoingthis
Isn't that what yachty and thug usually do though?
kingloofa455
True Yachty's flow is usually against the beat but Young Thug didn't even try to make his rhymes about independent artists or mixtapes.
