Yes. But vermillion comes from "worm" not from "green". They are homonyms in French, because the 'i' (as in green) sound in the Latin root became an 'e' (as in meh) sound in French, and most Romance languages.
French is somewhat infamous for having the sounds "vèr" mean half a dozen things, green, worm, glass, the other glass, towards, etc.
