The theorbo was used during the Baroque music era (1600–1750).

Smeagol is pretty good at that
Gongfuteaguy
here's a fun fact - most fretted instruments at the time had frets that were also made of gut, so the frets could be moved as well.
JaromirAzarov
It's pretty similar to a harp guitar. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHPgBd-T0pU

Does anyone know what musical piece he is playing? Or is it improv. I like it.

Strangely enough it is the size of a guitar - that man is 3 feet tall with T-Rex arms

We, small people with T-Rex arms, are ashamed by your comment. *play baroque guitar nervously*

And as they say, if it isn't Baroque, don't fix it.

For real though, how do you play the upper strings? Standing? Teamwork? You just don’t?
DonL9
That's a great sound, and he plays really damn well. I could listen to this a lot when I'm trying to relax.

Those Mel Bay books are good.

Your little old telecaster vs the guitar she told you not to worry about.
gooberhead

All fun and games until you poke someone's eye out.

Is that the musical version of a big truck to hide your small penis?
No, mine is bigger than yours, it's a fact, fuck you.
nerdyvet
nah, cuz this actually requires skill, and it's functional display demonstrates a cultural worth to society.
Fair enough, you are absolutely right about that.
evolution4407
Nice rich sound. Looks like the first several strings are meant to be played open.
TheNaykid
You could still play harmonic notes
bernardthehermit0
Yeah, no frets is a big clue
aThingWithTheStufAndTheJunk
Yep, drones, like on a banjo. They're actually the whole reason the neck is like that. It started as a bass lute and someone stuck an 1/
extension on the neck to add the drones for extra low notes.
AndThenThereWereSquirrels
Nah you gotta squeeze them real hard is all
baltimoreon
Depending on exactly which maker this is modeled after, the "top" 7-8 bass strings are tuned to the scale of the music you're playing
Cool.
nurmich
With a neck that long no wonder it baroque.
