My ma knew a few of those women as she was the same age as Mary Manning at the time. She made sure I knew the significance of their protest from an early age and loved to retell it every time we walked past that supermarket.

If you are wondering why anyone would name their kid Nimrod be aware Bugs Bunny was making fun of Elmer when he called him Nimrod because : "Nimrod is a biblical figure mentioned in the Book of Genesis. The son of Cush and great-grandson of Noah, Nimrod was described as a king in the land of Shinar (Lower Mesopotamia). The Bible states that he was "a mighty hunter before the Lᴏʀᴅ ... began to be mighty in the earth"". It was a great name before Bugs Bunny and the ignorant ruined it.

I mean, we are talking about a show whose audience was predominantly children. Sarcasm is a linguistic skill that only starts developing around the age of 5 and shouldn't really be considered to be mastered until the ages of 10-12. So between an obscure biblical figure and a weak understanding of sarcasm, the audience is working almost entirely on context. The "ignorant" ruined nothing. Children made an understandable leap of logic and the subject was too obscure to be corrected naturally.

It's a bit like the bunny plus carrots; people associate rabbits with carrots because of Bugs Bunny, but at the time of production and original distribution, people knew it was in reference to "It Happened One Night" with Clark Gable in a scene where he eats a carrot while talking.

I don't blame Bugs Bunny for ruining it, it was a joke calling Elmer "Nimrod" that only worked properly if you understood that Nimrod = "mighty hunter" - pure sarcasm.
The blame is on people who didn't get the joke and just turned it into a synonym for "idiot"
