I was raised in WV and lived there on and off for more than 30 years. More drunks per capita than any other place I've ever lived and that includes Milwaukee, Berlin and Bucharest. Something is very fucky with this "chart".

Hank Green broke it down in a video when the chart first came out. It's because it's aggregated data from each state (and sometimes from each county in a state) and each source had different collection techniques. The tell-tale sign is the stark changes at state borders when the data is displayed at the county levels (look at east-TN/west-NC border or the North-TX/OK border).

It’s probably the measure of people who live there rather than who drink when there. That said I was in LV earlier this year, had one pint and had to renegotiate my mortgage when I got home. So yeah I’d be a teetoatler pioneer if I lived there

Cheaper for sure. As a local it basically keeps you away from the strip due to 20 dollar beers . I went to wisconsin for a reunion and had a bar tab, a whole day long event and my bill might have been 40 dollars. I tipped 100% and still didn't get anywhere near Vegas prices for day long drinking.

Flagstaff, AZ is in that one red spot in Northern, AZ. One year New Belgium had their Tour de Phat event there and they ran out of beer almost immediately. Next year they doubled it and suffice it to say there were some shenanigans in town that day. Next year they moved it to ASU in Phoenix even though it is a far larger school, because Flagstaffers are hardened drinkers. 7k ft elevation is training altitude.
