I assume 90% of the rest are in China? The first town I lived in spoke "Chinese" but it sounded like Japanese as they had a long relationship with trading with Japan. Second place was about an hour away and a completely different "Chinese". Third again completely different.
Some places were just strong accents, like Nanjing-hua was similar to Beijing-hua (what most consider "Mandarin), but strongly accented, yao bu yao la jiao (do you want hot sauce) became "a yo laoyo ah?" Loved the languages

Counting languages is hard because there are always arguments about what is a language and what is a dialect. There are easily a couple hundred languages spoken in China even if all the Han languages are just counted as "Chinese". Those languages are often counted as just one because of the common script/literary tradition and history. I could name several mutually intelligible languages that are counted as separate languages for cultural/political reasons. Such is life.

Serbian and Croation are like the Hindi/Urdu pair in that they are written in different scripts by practitioners of different religions. Turkish and Azeri would be something like the Norwegian/Swedish pair. Yeah, mutual intelligibility is a spectrum. Even two speakers of the same dialect will have a few differences.

In Norway some dialects are more incomprehensible to far-away Norwegians than most Swedish and Danish is. Furthermore we have two written languages. One is basically written Danish so perhaps only 10-15% of the population actually pronounces anything somewhat similar to the written format, and another is new Norwegian which is supposed to be how we spoke in the olden days pre-Danish rule so not many talk like that either. Its a bit like if English wrote "I" as "jeg" but no one actually said jeg.

His opinion was that if the difference should increase it would become something like Chinese where there is no connection and it might become easier to learn. Weird thought.
