Growing up in the 1980s, about a third of all adults smoked, but 100% of the places you visited smelled like it

All my childhood I thought I had asthma. turns out after leaving for college and escaping the tobacco hotbox I grew up in that I wasn't the problem.

I'll never forget washing the walls in the first house I bought. I sprayed cleaner like crazy right where the walls touched the ceiling and as that cleaner ran down the wall, it took tons of yellow with it. By the time it ran all the way down, the cleaner was solid black and the walls looked like someone had sprayed yellow stain all over the white wall underneath. Took me days to scrub all the walls down and then the carpet had to come out and it smelled so bad it made me sick to my stomach.

The best part was always, when they defined some smoking area. A smoking area in a restaurant is like a piss area in the pool.

They are not allowed anymore, but for a while there were designated smoking areas which must be set up in such a way that the smoke did not reach the other parts of the restaurant/bar. Can't remember seeing them in restaurants, but there were these aquarium like spaces in bars where people went to smoke, which were literally grey with smoke...

Being born in the early 1980s, when the world had first started to distance itself from smoke, I can attest to this personally. Smoking was absolutely everywhere. You never escaped it - not at home, not in the car, not at libraries, nowhere. By time I was a teenager, that had completely changed. Smoke free was now the default.

Being born a bit earlier, I remember the transition taking a bit longer.
I had to look it up, and smoking in horeca was banned 2008 (Horeca is an abbreviation of Hotel, Restaurant, and Café, don't know the English term).

Bus stations. Train stations. Airports. Planes, trains, and automobiles. Restaurants. Stores. Taxis. Everything.

There's a reason why songs used to talk about "Smokey Rooms" a lot

Peaky blinders has a cigarette smoke tint whenever Tommy goes inside. I know that is fictional but it makes me get it a little bit

Yeah, if you went to a live show or bar you would always notice that cigarette smell on your clothes afterwards.

I remember having worn a sweater to a bar, laid it on bed foot rail when I got home.
Next day I walked past it, it wreaked of smoke

I remember when it was acceptable to smoke on planes and in cinemas.

Casinos still often allow smoking, and they make for truly disgusting places to be.

I'm not a fan of gambling, but I don't know how people could stand it, even if gambling were your thing.

Like smoking, gambling can be an addiction

It's a stark difference in casinos with good air systems. You can smell it still, but it's not bad. Then you go to a lower end casino and can _see_ the haze.

Yeah, the major casinos in Vegas have massive air purification systems and, while you can still smell it, it's a lot easier to deal with.

It's heartbreaking seeing the elderly shuffling around the slot machines toting their tanks of oxygen.

And their loyalty card, stuck in the slot machine, on a retractor.
It’s their life giving umbilical.
