My family has called me "stoic, a rock, an anchor."

I tend to keep my emotions bottled up, but DAMN did this movie get me bawling. I straight up had to pause it until my eyes were clear enough to keep watching.

For the "literally dozens" of people who haven't seen it, I suggest you do.

This is the appropriate reaction. it was an amazing and mind bending film.

Sad tears, or happy tears? Or first one then the other?

I first watched it at 10 pm and then had to take the dog for a reflective walk at midnight because... just.... God damn.

There's so much in that movie. So much emotion and understanding of people. I do not trust anyone that watched it till the end and didn't like it.

2 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 2

Yeah, first sad, then happy. The absolute defeatist disconnect between them, followed by a (possibly tentative) reunification. An actual sense of hope.

2 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

The pure, deep understanding of nihilism and ubdurdism portrayed by those two just shook me.

In an unrelated note, this has been my go to recommendation for "strong female lead" since the moment I watched it.

"In another life, I would have really liked just doing laundry and taxes with you."

2 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

I read somewhere that the translation is of a bit with that sentence. I don't know if It's true or not but essentialy he says "In another life, I would choose to do laundry and taxes with you." which makes it even better imo

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

*gentle hugs* You can be stoic and still cry. You can be the family's bedrock and still cry. :)

I'm really glad the film moved you this way. I loved it too. I'm more of a Weymond than a stoic, but I try hard to be everyone's rock. :)

2 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

That movie was so impressive. Really really good. But also, amazing that the writers were able to wrap their heads around it as a project and have it come together.

2 years ago | Likes 261 Dislikes 2

Plus one of the better depictions of multiverse imo. This movie really was a happy surprise for me

2 years ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 0

That the Daniels found on YouTube. Stunt team too.

2 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 1

EEAAO shouldn't work. It should be an incomprehensible, disastrous mess of a movie, and the fact that instead it's a masterpiece goes to show you just how talented the Daniels are.

I can't wait to see what they have in store for us next.

A rug that ties the room together, naturally.

I love EEAAO because everyone seems to get set off by a different part of the movie.
For me, it was Waymond - the husband - he was so caring and devoted and yet his wife was so focused on herself and her daughter that she was losing him without even realising it.
He loved her so much and she was too much of a main character to appreciate it.
I saw too much of myself in Evelyn and the way I had neglected partners in the past.

2 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 2

That is what got me, in the time line where they weren't together but they(mostly she) is famous he tells her about how he knows if there were an alternate timeline where she was stuck working a shitty laundromat he knows he'd be happy to be there working with her.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes, exactly! I saw myself in each one of them. They each had their own pain, their own trauma, and their own ways of coping. It just wasn't getting anyone anywhere, and that feeling was all too relatable. The nihilistic angle that validated the pointlessness of everything while highlighting the importance to choose good (for our own sakes even) felt like a spark of hope that could actually not burn out. Only film I've ever watched twice in theaters (and cried both times).

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Weymond’s explanation of his positivity got me. And other points throughout the movie that would be spoilery to mention, too, but Weymond overall got me the most.

2 years ago | Likes 605 Dislikes 1

I literally cried there. I have never had the words to explain myself to anyone, until I watched that scene. Had to pause it too. For those few minutes I didn't feel alone in the world.

"the only thing I do know is that we have to be kind. Please be kind, especially when we don't know what's going on." Waymond is an absolute treasure.

One of my favorite movies I have seen in recent years

2 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 0

"In another life, I would've loved to have done laundry and taxes with you." That sentence man. I've never bawled my eyes out in a movie theater like that.

2 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

That line kills me.

I am not into romantic movies but that line means so much more than anything with a “grand gesture”. The everyday grind we all have to endure but to have a partner we like in it is so touching.

I think that line and the line in Shoresy when he confesses his feelings. He just says he’d like to somehow make her life easier.

These two lines are gold.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've felt wrong, not like myself, for some time now but unable to articulate what I'd lost but it was this. I was someone who saw the bad but focused on the joy and lost it after my sister passed, haven't felt like myself since.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This was it for me, too. I'm pretty sure I had to do the same as OP and pause the movie because I was crying and couldn't track. Funny how the movie had me busting out in the stupidest laughter (the dog) to crying the ugliest tears. Most I've ever cried during a movie hands down.

2 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

Oh yeah the swings between laughing and crying were huge in this movie. I am also a very stoic guy and this movie hit me hard as well

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

The rocks lol

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

For me, it was the two guys…but anyway, no spoilers. Not that one can actually describe this movie coherently.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

He was sooo good. The whole movie was amazing. But let’s not pretend there weren’t some uh, laugh out loud moments. Awkward when you’re watching it on an airplane.

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Yes, of course! It was rated R, after all. But man, Waymond, man, he really got to me too!

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 1

That’s my least favourite part but I love the rest.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, my wife and I were cracking up for a solid five minutes at that part.

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

If anyone had told me Jamie Lee Curtis would make me cry with hod dog fingers, I would've said drugs are truly a problem in our society. And yet here we are.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

For me it was the award and later the very specific combat weaponry. Also I DID NOT RECOGNIZE Jamie Lee Curtis until I saw credits lol

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Like Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder. "Hey... I swear I know that actor... but from where?" *credits roll* "ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!"

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

OH MY GOD YES. Honestly I'd never have actually recognized RDJ but the Tom Cruise credits reveal blindsided me even harder!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I keep meaning to watch it. As a man who might not be called stoic, but definitely hides a lot of emotional depth…you sold it. The only time I cry is watching media that moves me and sometimes reading the news. My first floor apartment was completely flooded above my ankle two weeks ago and everyone I talked to told me I was handling it is so well, but on the inside I was roiling. Probably could use a good cry. Love ya, Johnny

2 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 2

Only teared up watching one thing as an adult so far. Still not sure why I did. Was at the point of an in memoriam message for one of the actors in the show. Wasn't my favourite character or an actor i was familiar with.
Puzzles me years on

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Ok so in Stargate SG-1 the doctor dies (spoilers but ffs get with the new century y'all) and no matter how many times I watch it it *still* gets me that little bit misty. Like, I *know* this character dies. I have witnessed this televised event a dozen times *this year* and yet. And it's not even a particularly *good* death scene! It's mundane and boring and *that* above all else gets me cause homegirl just went to work and didn't go home.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It is probably my favourite death scene in a show. The episode as a whole is my favourite of sg1 too.
I like episodes that break the norm and focus on smaller characters

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yeah I honestly love it too, it wasn't a basic 'their contract wasn't renewed' write-off feel, and after that long you're really bonded to that group of characters. I cried harder for Janet than Daniel tbh, though the first go-around when it was still in production Daniel was a solid hit as well. I guess it just loses its sting when you know it's a daytrip!

2 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 3

By original you mean a combo of many other films?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 12

life is a combo of many other things my dude

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

True. Palm Springs was good, I enjoyed it.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a veteran staffer of many weddings, it's a fuckin great movie. Love the bit when they're talking about who he's slept with and it's the bartender giving him a hand job and she's just like "I ran over a dude in this car"

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Original in the context of fictional works is defined as it not being an adaptation or sequel.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

True, it’s an original story, but the originality was limited. We so desperately want something “original” these days. I like my sci-fi a little more grounded apparently.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

Well at least I gave you the benefit of the doubt by assuming that you just weren't familiar with the terminology, but turns out you're just a dumbass.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

That’s a good conversation, did daniels do wonders? Absolutely. To me the story wasn’t that good. They are visual masters. I don’t get why people are simps for that film. The everything bagel was funny but I prefer primer or matrix. The comment votes here are run by a snobby nerd mafia of some sort. I know what an original screenplay is, but the tropes were too obvious for me to call it a completely original concept. Thanks for being particular about the word “original” and lambasting me.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I fucking bawled during it. Watched it with my partner, and she held me while I just bawled. It's such a powerful movie.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

That movie rams through my emotions like a god damn truck. I relate to the mother-daughter relationship so much. I cried SO MUCH because of how accurately it portrays the struggles of being a daughter to an immigrant mother who just DOESN'T and WON'T understand you. My mom also watched the movie and just said she didn't get it and that she didn't really feel anything watching it. Because of course. She's too oblivious to realize how much alike we are to the characters in the movie.

2 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

Hugs and know that your struggle is highly translatable to others too. I'm a Midwestern white dude and I fucking lost it because of my relationship with my mom too. And that's not diminishing of you either, that's me trying to say we are all in this ocean called life together. We're all just humans trying to get to the next safe shore

Lilo means lost, Stitch means "to mend." And speaking of symbolism in names, it's not Jobu. It's Joy. So I hope you identify with Hsu's character because that means you're a joy. Lame sentiment but I'm kinda sad and drunk and a little sleep deprived

Half Asian with an Asian mother. Cried watching this on the plane. Brought shame on my family.

2 years ago | Likes 92 Dislikes 2

Half Asian with Asian mother as well. Managed to keep it together right until the credits rolled. At that point it all just hit me at once. Cried my ass off until I felt dehydrated.

Got told in several ways I brought shame to my family. I know better now.

It still hurts. But I know better now.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I think it will always hurt, even if we know differently. Just know you’re not alone and you’re perfect the way you are.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I cry every time I watch it because it feels so close to my relationship with my (Asian) mom too. Even though I know her life before me was so hard and know that she hurts too, in relation to her parents.

I also brought shame on my family, not because I bawled my eyes out, just in general lol

2 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 0

Not Asian but I wanted my mom to watch it, because I felt she would identify with Evelyn. She didn't care for the movie and I was torn up about it, but I guess that's apropos to the theme that just because family is different doesn't make them less of your family. Accept them for who they are.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I would never show it to my mom because she’d be so offended by it and call it weird. Still love her but she’s strictly a Hallmark and Kdrama watcher.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My brother was watching it on the plane near me and turned it off after the butt plug fight.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Got a dumb story actually. In 2018 ('19?) the apartment building i was living in caught an electrical fire. Very bad night, ended up with us staying at my mom's for like a year. But the day after, she watched TV with us while we cooled off from literally being uprooted. We watched Deadpool 2, an equally silly movie about family. (That's a stretch but give me the stretch.) It's one of my best memories, my ma just watching a comic book movie with me. And I ❤ dubstep

I’m so very sorry about your dad.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm so sorry my dude. My dad did a blammo. That funeral trip is fucking rough, and I only did it in a car, not an airplane. Still remember my uncle and mom taking us to scatter the ashes, it was surreal because I'm used to driving. All I did was stare out the fucking window.

Agreed though, its definitely not for everyone.

It is silly but very poignant too, I have watched it a lot of times and I crack up at some parts and cry at others. It's mostly a movie about a mother's relationship with her daughter.

It IS silly - but it's also one of the best films in recent times. Whatever acclaim the movie has already, it deserves more.

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

You've been trying to cry for years?... Why?

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Crying is catharsis and one of the symptoms of depression is not being sad but being absent of emotion. Not crying is a symptom of larger mental health issues. Everyone needs to cry, if we didn't need to, it wouldn't be a thing that our brains and bodies make us do

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I get it. Sometimes life has beat you up so much you can't cry even if you know it would be a much needed release.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

There was an episode of "Everybody Loves Raymond" that dealt with this. He saw his wife crying and tried to "fix" it, to make her not cry. She explained that she liked crying as an emotional release. He didn't get it, and I didn't get it either at the time. It was literally this post that made me remember that episode. Take a bottle of soda for example, you twist the cap a little to let some of the gas out, seal it, then let out a little more. Otherwise, things can explode.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Crying can be a relief when you bottle up things inside for too long. When you have depression or other issues you feel mostly numb and not sad. I sometimes feel so terrible and really want to cry to just let it out, but all I get are burning eyes and not a single tear. You can't imagine how frustrating that is, how crushing to not be allowed even a little bit of relief.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So, out of curiosity. I'm demisexual. Which would seem to be the complete and polar opposite of aromantic. I don't know. What do you think? I've never met someone aromantic before, so I'm curious.

I don’t quite understand what you’re asking. I can say is that in my case, all of the things that separate having a best friend from having a romantic relationship seem deeply unpleasant to me.

I probably can't explain my thoughts very well. For me, if there's no deep emotional connection then sex is absolutely off the table as it would be unpleasant for me. A one night stand is something I would have nightmares about. So, if you're aromantic would that mean that if you do have sex with someone it would only be with someone you have no romantic connection to? Or if you're aromantic does that mean physical intimacy is simply something you don't crave?

There are aromantic and asexual people; I happen to be both. Aromantic could possibly mean they have a sex drive and enjoy sex, they just don’t feel romantic feelings. Asexual people can experience romantic love, the baseline just don’t have a desire for sex. That doesn’t mean they can’t have it, it’s just not something they seek out for the sake of it.

there were some good (great even) moments of both action and emotion, but it left a really bad taste in my mouth at the end. watched it because of the hype but if i hadn't been on a plane i would have turned it off maybe 2/3 through, and i only got more and more disinterested in it as it went on after that

My wife and I hated it. Bored me to tears.

Same i couldn't finish it. Lost interest half way in. Maybe it's because i watch a lot of animation, but it didn't feel original to me at all.

I tried to leave after the first 30 minutes. I was on a plane over the Atlantic

I had a couple of moments that were touching. Like the rock chase where she said "I'm gonna get you" I used to say that to my infant child and crawl around after them, but that was about it

I couldn't make it through 25 minutes. Terrible

I'm with you. I understood the themes and the fact that it's a movie about emotional growth and accepting yourself and accepting others, but from an audiovisual experience, I absolutely hated it.

You're not alone

It happens. Plenty of popular things don't land with me but this one did.

I was 100% thoroughly confused the entire time. Maybe it’s because I’m neurodivergent idk, I didn’t like it either.

Have generally found that NDs really connect with this film and its style, and NTs much less so. But nothing's a monolith.

So were we.

A lot of it has been compared to adhd and the director got a adhd diagnosis afterwards. It is a neurodivergent movie.

I have ADHD and I hated it. My wife is filipino and grew up with a first generation Asian family and she hated it. We both have kids together and we hated it. It missed on every level, everywhere, all at once.

Explaining to my family that my brain flips between things like the movie lol

I tried. I started with saying I think the ending was the first world and most everything was in her head but that is as far as I got. :/ No one beleived me on that possibility.

I think the directors were clear that real multiverses existed so it wasn’t really in her head?
