Aside from punching the radiator in by backing up too far and as long as you don't put yourself under it, there doesn't seem to be too much wrong with this expedient solution, aside from doing it in the middle of the bumper rather than the side with the flat. The chain will dig into the post or tree trunk and not slip.

Horrific levels of unsafe. But I suspect this is from a field manual and is for situations where getting rolling again is more important than normal repair safety. Such as being in questionable territory and getting the truck moving before enemy recon spots you.

You'd probably want to pull it back a little farther, at least until the log touches the hood. You don't want any "accidents" involving the chain sliding straight down the log.

And also loosen the lugs beforehand, and use the log on the side you need to change, hoping to keep the other tire on the ground. If you're doing this with a regular differential, and both wheels are up, they will just spin with each other. Make sure you got a wheel on the ground. And take the wheel off and put it under the frame of the car just in case. I always do this because it's good practice, and might save your life.

You chain it up as in fig. 1, and then you reverse (RWD) so your front wheels are off the ground as in fig. 2.
