Profitable companies should not be subsidized.
Miller16of16
If a company needs to be subsidized for the "public good" it should be nationalized, policy decided by referendum.

The world is on fire. I'm not saying the deaths of a few CEOs and billionaires would solve the issue, but it would make it a little better. ;)

the damage is baked in at this point. stopping wont reverse this. we're gonna have these fires worse and worse(as we catch up to the lag) for generations. stopping now, just makes the future survivable. so yes, we should stop. don't expect the fires to go out though. this is the price we pay for what we have done. it will be payed.

Carbon tax and carbon footprint are corporations inventions to avoid stopping burning the planet.

Canada. So hot right now.gif

Yup. That fire is grabbing a lot of land!

DaveSamsonite
The fires are almost always started by lightning. We live in Northern Ontario on North Channel of Lake Huron & we had hella smoke this week from a forest fire just north of Michigan.
Moving oil passing through a sealed pipeline does not create a fire risk. It's remarkably difficult to ignite.
It is necessary for Canada to disentangle itself from dependence on the now completely unreliable US.
And I say that as a US citizen that has house in Canada that has been in our family for generations
IHateTransphobes
But the conditions for ignition are created by carbon emissions.
spontaneous9
The pipelines causing fires is not the issue, it's the consumption of fuel driving CO2 buildup which heats the whole planet.
The dry conditions are nothing new, granted, but droughts are more pervasive under climate shift, warmer temps allowing insect & fungus-borne diseases access further and further north as the atmosphere continues to heat up, and the reflective albedo of the ice cap is reduced as it shrinks northward, causing more rapid absorption of atmospheric heat. It's a vicious cycle.
PlancksKonstant
You're kinda overplaying this by virtue of "what Canada contributes", I'm sorry to say that most of the Western Hemisphere looks like this every 6 months (and the Southern Hemisphere in alternate months) but doesn't quite get Canada's response. Much of Canada and the US have exemplary wildlands firefighting ability. It happens; fires happen since prehistory. You're only crying part of the story; if you were a true altruist you'd include fires around the globe.

Sorry buddy, statistics don't care about your feelings, they are getting worse and more frequent. Educate yourself

They have absolutely gotten worse recently. Canada and Australia's wildfire seasons have started to overlap now so they can't share teams.

Set fire to the fossil fuel industry.

You 100% have control over the audio, dumbass. When you post, you can choose whether or not to keep the audio. Take responsibility instead of passing the buck.

We are not going to make it as a species. We make the most sociopathic around us key execs for companies. And in turn those companies run the world. You somehow remove this one thing in our species of Sociopaths ruling, things would improve immediately.

Tar sands were bought by far-Right oligarch Koch brothers at pennies on the dollar and suddenly water became available for energy intensive, highly polluting liquification, and pipelines were green-lighted. Highly carbon intensive- busting all treaty, climate friendly/green energy goals.Completely corrupt. System is rigged- ask the robbed Osage Indians https://www.nationalobserver.com/2015/05/04/news">rs-rich">https://www.nationalobserver.com/2015/05/04/news/how-canada-made-koch-brothers-rich https://time.com/5685528/koch-industries-corporate-power/ 1

For decades, Koch Industries heavily invested in the Alberta tar sands, acquiring massive land leases when Canadian bitumen prices were low. By buying and leasing hundreds of thousands of acres at a fraction of their potential value, they built a lucrative upstream-to-downstream pipeline—refining cheap Canadian crude at their Pine Bend facility 2/

People get what they vote for. The very moment the price of goods rose just a touch, people were willing to abandon everything for any charlatan who promised to kill any and every initiative that might possibly raise the price of Twinkies.
We damn near elected a majority Conservative government that would have done all this and more, because they came up with a nursery rhyme to "axe the [carbon] tax" and that apparently was a really compelling argument to a majority of Canadians.
NaughtButOne
We had one of the most capable, effective leaders in Canadian history in Justin Trudeau and while I wasn't happy with everything he did (strike busting), my countrymen decided to throw him away for a lifelong political leech who can't find his glasses because, "ehh I'm tired of him".
It would be nice if the NDP actually offered anything, but whether it's Singh stabbing his political allies in the back or Lewis insisting Canada doesn't need a military, they've been completely non-viable.
GuitarGeorge
I’ve been saying Carney is a piece of shit for months. Maybe now people will start agreeing with me.
BrdCdn
Nah he's doing fine. Canada could shut down our oil industry tomorrow and not a single drop less of oil would be burned or produced globally. There's no big new oil development planned in Canada. These pipes will take oil off railways and out of pipes to America and send it to market at fair prices instead at least. Arguing against these new pipes just helps the Koch Brothers and Americans.
KitteyWolf
I had... i won't say "high" hopes for him. but i had... hopes. he was the best of a bad situation, and hes IMMEDIATELY killed any good-will. fuck Carney and the liberals. NDP is the way to be.
GuitarGeorge
I’d vote for NDP, under one condition. If they promise to fund all their social program expansion by cleaning up wasteful spending instead of increasing taxes. It would likely cover all their plans.
KitteyWolf
#both xD
Raise taxes for our garbage [our billionaires] and then clean up the wasteful spending too.
GuitarGeorge
In Canada, the top 10% pay 50% of the money the government collects, and the bottom 50% pays 4% of the money collected. The tax rates for the rich are quite a bit higher here than in the U.S..
KitteyWolf
Oh I know... But uh, as a canadian- TAX'EM HIGHER. Lord knows they can afford it.
abc987
Wasnt he still the "better" choice? Like other running was like maga chud? Still rough how it ended. Secret 3rd option seems nice by now
GuitarGeorge
Choice??? Ha. Nobody voted for him. He didn’t win an election, it was handed to him.
BrdCdn
No he is doing fine. This post is 80% bullshit and exaggeration. There's no new major oil projects in the works. These new pipes are about taking oil we are selling at a discount to Americans like the Koch Brothers, and instead getting market price for it and decoupling from the US. Also about taking oil off trains.
GuitarGeorge
Canada currently has 4 pipeline projects in the works.
Northern shield energy corridor
Enbridge mainline expansion
West coast oil pipeline proposal
LNG Canada project
You’re either willfully ignorant or you’re just lying.
BrdCdn
Talking oil. Two of those are gas.
GuitarGeorge
And two of them are oil. You said there weren’t any. Double down much?
