Most politicians lie. But the problem it creates 's more the voters' fault than the politicians. They lie because lies get them votes. If lying didn't get them votes, they'd still do it but a lot less of them would get elected. Maybe if there were some form of accountability, like being ineligible for re-election if it was proven in court that you made promises you knew you couldn't or wouldn't try to keep? Or laws punishing media for echoing known campaign lies?
Most of the time, it's actually *not* that they believed him--it's that they KNEW he was lying, it was obvious, but they PRETENDED to believe his lies because they saw whom his lies would hurt, and they *liked* that.
We told them over and over that he was lying, but they insisted WE were the ones lying, also over and over. Probably because he told them what they wanted to hear. And now that they're finally accepting that he was lying, we won't stop saying "I told you so."
To be fair, it sucks to be gaslit by apologists for capital actively being harmed by the imperial ethno-nationalist christofascist war machine while sucking its metaphorical dick so hard they got chapped lips for the better part of 2 decades personally, and almost 5 decades as a movement(Or more accurately since the Enclosure and the Paris commune.)
Did they believe him or did they follow someone who normalized their hate? It's possible to follow someone for more than one reason, even if that reason is just because you think it's funny when certain groups of people get upset.
Why assume you know what people are thinking? Are you the jackass whisperer?
I mean I think a fair number of them are just in typical team/tribal pits. They treat it like their favorite football team, who cares if the running back tortures animals so long as he plays good. GO TEAM!!!! Doesn't matter what they do, what they say, who or what they hurt. Just Go Team!!!
Only the ones who got elected & actually supported his tyranny. His voters & small donors don't need to be executed, merely permanently disenfranchised. Let them run their own lives, just keep them from trying to ruin anyone else's.
They better shut the f$ck up when « real » adults get back in WH in 3y while trying undo all the shit they’ve done which to be honest, won’t be possible.
I mean yes for certain things but you can’t fix the long term damage he did with trade partners and allies in a heartbeat.
And for god’s sake just close Fox News and invest in your education dept so that next generation won’t be that easy to fool.
During the first election cycle my aunt was visiting my mom's house and politics came up and she looked at her feet and sadly said "but Hillary kills babies". That's it. That was her whole stance. I kinda wish I didn't live a life of stoic repression because it would have been nice to unload a little bit. Even to say "Can you tell me one time Hillary killed a baby?"
And worse, some of you are STILL peddling his bullshit lies knowing FULL AND GOD DAMN WELL that it’s all bullshit. You just don’t give a shit because he’s on your “team” and you’d all rather die and take this great country down with you than ever admit you were wrong. Fuck. You. Burn in hell.
Some believed, some didn't, most didn't care. Most just wanted to hurt people. That's the fundamental ideology of MAGA. As long as they get to hurt somebody they don't give a fuck about anything else.
I get why people develop cult-like obsessions with particular leaders, it happens. What I really DON'T get is why they become like that with such a freak-looking guy who blatantly lies and wears his fucked-up mental landscape on his sleeve.
It's like, you sold your soul for a painted turd in a bad wig. One that has been a conman his entire life. You failed the easiest open book test in history.
Can we just, for now, encourage anyone who is willing to turn on him. Just until we end this disaster and get going in the right direction. Then we can treat them like the unreliable idiots that they are. Yes they have no credibility and smart people should never trust their judgement but it is going to take a tidal wave to wash away this mess and put reforms in place.
The thing is that being wrong feels exactly like being right. A person has no way of knowing, instinctively, and assume that they are right and others are wrong. All sides of everything are susceptible to this. And once you realize you are wrong, it feels like shit. And us making it feel like worse shit is not an incentive for people to admit they were wrong. I get being angry, bitter, self-righteous. Truly. Very justified emotions. But these blanket statements are how societies remain divided.

I wish I had more compassion and sympathy than i do. And i respect your last line. I see it from the side is if the majority of MAGA don't learn from the mistakes, and elected officials who fall in line don't pay consequences, its just going to happen again. And sooner than we probably think. Whoever runs on the ticket in 2028, could be lucifer himself, their stance will be "well, can't be so bad right? At least it's not Trump"
I see it as a lot of MAGA people stuck in the sunk cost fallacy. They've spent THIS long being THIS ridiculous, they can't just stop now, can they? Sure they can. I have zero compassion or sympathy, I'm just practical
It want. There isn’t real evidence of this. The liberal voters stayed home, the conservatives and the completely uniformed voters who only know the game show host/publicity whore turned out in larger numbers.
Everyone has the potential for change, and it should be encouraged. You've seen the light? Good. Now do something to make amends. While forgiveness is free, trust must be earned back. I forgive, but I don't forget right away. Make me forget through recency bias - demonstrate the change to the point where I see it as the default.
I agree with this, I have seen so many posts across the net saying they wish their parents/friend/family member would wake up and see the what's really happening. But when they do and they post to show that they are trying to get their head around it they are attacked. This is the best way to send them straight back into the arms of the cult.
I wish I still felt the way you do, but the last decade of these nazis has proven that they won't fucking change. Watching them cry like fucking children that WASHING THEIR FUCKING HANDS was somehow opporessing their freedom while they fucking killed millions of americans with covid made it clear - the only good nazi is a dead nazi, they can't be fixed or changed or saved.
I believe COVID broke something in me too. People lying about and freely spreading a deadly disease without regard for their fellow humans. Had a friend of a friend who could not understand why I had no sympathy for her work mentor dying of covid after hearing how this dude spent the last 18 months actively encouraging covid in their office, bullying people who wanted to wear masks, claiming it was a hoax, etc etc, and then he took up a hospital bed and vent for 2 weeks before he died.

I stopped caring about the nazis when they fucking cheered for covid deaths and made bad hygiene a source of personal pride.
Nazis belong in the ground, not in society.
The only reason we still have to deal with them is because we did not kill the slavers after the civil war.

There absolutely is some evidence. How widespread it was is up for debate, but hundreds of votes was enough to flip some states they were so close.
