Most politicians lie. But the problem it creates 's more the voters' fault than the politicians. They lie because lies get them votes. If lying didn't get them votes, they'd still do it but a lot less of them would get elected. Maybe if there were some form of accountability, like being ineligible for re-election if it was proven in court that you made promises you knew you couldn't or wouldn't try to keep? Or laws punishing media for echoing known campaign lies?

During the first election cycle my aunt was visiting my mom's house and politics came up and she looked at her feet and sadly said "but Hillary kills babies". That's it. That was her whole stance. I kinda wish I didn't live a life of stoic repression because it would have been nice to unload a little bit. Even to say "Can you tell me one time Hillary killed a baby?"

The thing is that being wrong feels exactly like being right. A person has no way of knowing, instinctively, and assume that they are right and others are wrong. All sides of everything are susceptible to this. And once you realize you are wrong, it feels like shit. And us making it feel like worse shit is not an incentive for people to admit they were wrong. I get being angry, bitter, self-righteous. Truly. Very justified emotions. But these blanket statements are how societies remain divided.

I see it from the side is if the majority of MAGA don't learn from the mistakes, and elected officials who fall in line don't pay consequences, its just going to happen again. And sooner than we probably think. Whoever runs on the ticket in 2028, could be lucifer himself, their stance will be "well, can't be so bad right? At least it's not Trump"

Had a friend of a friend who could not understand why I had no sympathy for her work mentor dying of covid after hearing how this dude spent the last 18 months actively encouraging covid in their office, bullying people who wanted to wear masks, claiming it was a hoax, etc etc, and then he took up a hospital bed and vent for 2 weeks before he died.
