I don’t care if this gets downvoted but I just have to say this somewhere and get it off my chest..

After working for 11+ years as a retail manager I lost my job. A few rocky year later I was offered a job at a causal restaurant. The bosses I have are AMAZING! They gave me a job when my life had taken a detour into a ditch. I had applied for dozens and dozens of jobs with no call backs or prospects. I had low self esteem, was severely depressed and had isolated myself. They gave that sense of self back to me and for the first time in a long time I felt I had purpose. Sure it was working with food but beggars can’t be choosers! Now a few years in, I’m hitting some hurdles. I’m messing up orders and can’t seem to get my act together. Restaurant work is hard. It’s not my favorite job but I love the people I work with. They’re like family! My boss had mentioned that maybe restaurant work isn’t my thing and maybe I should consider looking elsewhere. Covid has hit NY hard so all restaurant owners are struggling. I get it! I don’t want him to lose money but I also don’t want to leave even though I dislike the type of work I do. I’m 42 going on 43 and know age discrimination is alive and well. I’m afraid I’ll have the same shitty luck at finding a Job like I did last time! I’m scared, hurt, terrified and feeling utterly worthless. I don’t want sympathy. I just wanted to rant. Thanks for listening.

EDIT: I can’t believe how many people have responded to this post! Thank you so much!! Thanks to everyone who’s offered advice and kind words! I will read them all; even the bad ones. It’s nice to know I’m not alone. Thank you kind strangers!

Start applying! You don't have to take any offer, but it's great to build that skill and see what's out there :)

Look for a jib while you still have this one. Look at jobs a little outside of your norm, like administrative. Job hunting sucks good luck!

Sounds like you are hardworking, dedicated. Reliable and thoughtful, usajobs.gov

Thanks I’ll check it out!

Sounds like you need counseling. You are normal & a lot of people feel the way you do.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This year has been especially stressful and exhausting. It is ok to be tired.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2020 need to suck a dick! Worst year ever!

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We're all playing the game, dude. Don't sweat it.

Just quit for a new gig, new challenge. Feels great. Look for something new, lock it down and get the f*ck out.

5 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Not that easy when you have a family and your the sole provider to the family (my situation), but othervice hell yes

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Locking it down first is the key!

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Wait with quitting until you've locked down

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Start seeing a therapist right away. Therapy that includes talking and meds will straighten you out and help prepare you for the job hunt.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I should. I take med for my ADHD but I always manage to sound fine and upbeat. I don’t want them to think or see me struggling.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As someone that spent 9 years doing the same at a job I hated, good luck man.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Start looking. Errors like that are a sign we've moves bruins a job. I'm your age and was there earlier this year. New job, much happier.

5 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

I’ve never looked at it that way before. Proof that I should follow my instinct. Thank you!

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Your boss will understand and appreciate that your want to invest in yourself by advancing your career.

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

"moves bruin"? I'm sure this is a typo, but I can't for the life of me figure what it was supposed to be.

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Moved beyond*

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Moved beyond"? "D" is next to "s" and "e" next to "r", "y" next to "u", "o" next to "i", "d" next to "s". Also makes sense in the context.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Thank you! I hope we get clarification.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I hate to say it but no matter what you tell them they'll probably know, judging by your body language

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hey @op don't get too down on yourself. The stress of this pandemic has many of us messing up at work. Try some self care - try mediation.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Keep fighting. It gets better.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

At least it's a causal resturant. What if it was anti-causal? You'd have to serve the food before it's ordered, it would be a mess.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Your performance is declining, you ethics, loyalty are fantastic. Put 1hr a week to learn a new skills and sell yourself(try IT). Otherwise,

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Start your own business with Grant money/loans (food, nut cart). Dont stay where you are. You know it's a dead end. Dont panic. Stay nice

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And keep work performance going. You just gotta work 1hr/week harder to change your job/start a business

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Im in the same situation but with an untrusted boss who keeps putting me down and use me (and throw me under the bus). Im hunting for work

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That sucks! Sorry to hear you’re struggling too! I’ll definitely take that advice into mind and start that learned skill idea. I like it!

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Your public library might offer free online course. Otherwise, take a look at lynda">a.com">lynda.com or coursera.com (contact tracing jobs pay $60k)

My Dad always told me "when swinging through the jungle, don't let go of one vine until you've got a firm grip on the next one" ??

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Absolutely! Thanks for the solid tidbit!

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same boat here. I shovel wet sawdust in a lumber mill for 10 hours a day. Hate it, but it's the only job that pays enough to live on here.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wow! That’s backbreaking work I bet! Have you thought about moving and starting over too?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, but the cons outweigh the pros on moving elsewhere, unfortunately.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Anytime an employee tells me "I love my job." I assume hes looking for a new one. As a people we aren't good at dealing with issues .....

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

So we lie to ourselves (and others) to try and convince ourselves it's okay.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nailed it right on the head.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Messing up? “My boss mentioned...” @op Your boss is trying to warn you. They need to fire you, but they’re hoping you’ll leave on your own.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You need to find a different job ASAP. They are delaying it to be nice, but eventually they will do it. It sounds like they will give good

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

(2) references (just not for restaurant-type stuff). If they didn’t like you they would have booted you already. Heed their warning.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeas I know you’re right. I’m trying to figure out my next move and plan it accordingly all while not messing up even worse.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Best advice I've got is look where you normally wouldn't. I did 15yrs in food and now I work in a greenhouse. Never expected it. Love it.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What does causal mean?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

OP clearly meant 'casual' -- as in the 'casual dining' sector -- and just misspelled it.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Pipe down

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This my fellow imgurian, is what we call wage slavery. I'm sorry to say, but all studies show that corporations are fucking us.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I worked in retail and for a very large corporation that was sued many times. I’d like one day to do my own thing and answer to nobody.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's less and less likely to happen in today's economy. More and more tiny businesses(in part 2) fail miserably. It's all by design.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I say tiny and not small, because a small business is quantified by having up to 1500 employees. That's not a small business. That's large.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just promoted out of my old store and start anew tomorrow, but I’ll def miss my crew. Dumb work is fine if you have good coworkers

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You could sell more of your creations on Etsy. That pillow was kickass~especially for a first one!

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Haha thanks! I’ve actually wanted to do my art full time but fear has also held me back in that too. I use to dream of being an art

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

teacher or an artist full time but I came from a family of doctors who frowned upon that idea.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In less than a year the entire world population has experienced a 180 in some way. Career changers aplenty. What have you got to lose? 1/

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you were on Etsy, etc., I’d buy a pillow from you right now. 2/ END

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A year ago on a Friday night I made a list of the pros and cons of my job back then. I quit the Monday after. Till today best choice

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was doing the same thing, but he eventually caught on when my sales numbers dipped. Now no job. halp

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can relate. Learned the little I do know on the job and have no confidance to apply elsewhere for fear of seeming like a fraud. ?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Absolutely! I feel like I’ve stagnated. I have a degree but feel it’s worthless. I want to learn new skill but is that even worthwhile? It’s

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A rough call and I’m struggling to chose the right path to expand my skills.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Totally. I feel like the best thing is to try and grow in anyway possible. Choose somethung to study and give yourself 3months to get or

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Whatever seems like a reasonable enough time to do it. Its easier said than done i know but the try is where its at i suppose.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Remember: when you're searching for a job and you already have one, YOU get to interview THEM

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Interesting. I never thought of it that way before. Thanks!

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Absolutely same here, 44 marketing manager. Check your health. You might be lacking some nutrients, iron etc.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hmmm really? I think I’m healthy. I eat or try to eat healthy. I take multivitamins and exercise regularly. Well I was until gyms closed.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For some reason I assume you are a woman. Pre-menopausal symptoms can cause havoc. Check iron, cortisol, reduce inflamation, remove sugar etc

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do you want to work in retail? Do you know why you are mucking up now? Have you considered studying something else? 1/X

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Have you looked at leadership training or similar? If someone else was in your position, what would you recommend they do to help it? 2/X

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I hate my job too, im a new manager and hate my team despite the 20k pay rise. Im deciding between different fields to study in 3/X

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

One you think about it enough, we waste so much time at work we need to not hate that time. Covid is a big factor and the economy, but 4/X

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Best to still have a goal to work towards, that means motivation which is the antithesis of depression. 5/X

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good luck and message me if you don’t hate what i’ve said and want to talk!
