So yeah, got the opportunity to travel to Japan, other side of my world, but went there all alone. Turns out you quickly start to miss people a bunch, and all that alone times gives you too much time to think about your relationships and how shallow too many are. I feel awful as I have these thoughts because everyone is always saying how amazing it must have been, how cool it is to have the time and money for it, and I just feel emptier coming back than ever before.
Japanese sights for your viewing pleasure, i still enjoyed the trip, just not coming back I guess, got a shit ton of those if y’all like
economyinthis
I have relocated cross county soon to be five times...you shed the vapid people fast
XAMANDER
When you said "y'all" there at the end you lost all respect and credibility.
scifinovelist
Damn OP, ya gotta remember to speak English to the people who u return, 彼らは日本語を分からないだよ。
katieminx
Thats actually a good sign! It means ur ready to grow past those relationships. It takes courage to walk away from what no longer serves you
zackalawi
Wherever you go, there you are.

Japan is emotionally provocative, especially for Westerners.

I've been studying in Japan for the last 4 months and the activities I did alone just made me more confident.
northcarolinaisbeststate
That's a very normal feeling of traveling alone, working alone, etc.. It can be attributed to thing from culture shock to home sickness.
thatdudethatslonely
Did you meet someone special who perhaps you are missing more than Japan itself?
YUMERIS
Went out of my comfort Zone, travelling alone, realizing being alonr makes me mad, back in comfort zone still alone.
Whyyyymeeee
....in the end, we die alone... :(
PixieVixie
I lived there for 2 years. I had friends but they came and went. Got very used to being a lone wolf. High highs & low lows.

If you ever come to Japan again and visit Kyoto, send me a message, I'll help you out around town.
WhatADayWhatALovelyDay
Well, I’ve been there, one of the best part of the trip, mostly because I was able to meet up with a friend for 2 days, which saved my trip
drownthesun
This exact thing has happened to me. It's half learning to accept it, half overcoming it and 100% appreciation for your people.
irritableeye
No matter where you go, there you are.
Ilovebuns
It happens to alot of people. Especially military. They leave for 7 months to 24 months away and they get a new point of view. 1/2
Ilovebuns
I'm sorry it happened. But maybe it is a good thing to happen now? Good luck.
plymouthvaliant
I've been all over the world. I used to live in Japan. Then you come home and realize a lot of people never even noticed you were gone.
WhatADayWhatALovelyDay
Exactly this, had a few people who showed genuine interest in my travels and I love them for it, for most, I’m the one with a monthlong hole
ChanceVLuck
I do not say this flippantly. Spend a few bucks and see a psychologist about this. This is a precursor to depression.
jennym123
I've been considering doing this. Can't find a travel companion to save myself.
JmacNutSac
I did the same after a difficult break up and months of depression. But it was the best experience of my life. Met many people and never

Make a post of pictures, I want to visit one day.
Hangryandold
I got you. I will try to post some pics from my Japan trip from fall 2016. Will definitely go back one day!
Cincychaos
redtail62
Me too! I mean, I probably suffer from loneliness/solitude too but dammit if, one day, I ain’t gonna visit where Nintendo was born :]
WhatADayWhatALovelyDay
Sure, I’ll do that sometime this week, will tag you
Actualimguraccount
Is this where we creepy axe killers look for a friend to go to japan with? I’m down for it!
neos501
See I want to travel also... but I don't have anyone to go with. and being some places trying to have fun but being alone sounds crippling.
sunnygroovemother
Stay in hostels and go on group excursions! Also helps to meet people if you stay in each place at least 3 days.
doyouevenrobot
TBH it's way easier to travel solo. Coordinating with more than 1-2 people can be a fucking pain.
Dsharppe
This. You get to go where you want. Leave when you want. Not do what you don't want to do. It's perfect.
Mercurybird
The 1st time is scariest but it gets easier. I don’t mind it now. If I continued to wait for someone to go with, I’d never get anywhere! GO!
GoldenSun3DS
Never go anywhere, got it. Thanks for the advice.
Mercurybird
Wow. Not sure how you got that out of what I said. You must be fun at parties.
GoldenSun3DS
Wow. Not sure how you missed my joke. You must be fun at parties.
AyoSis
i'd go with you if i could afford it
FoeOfFauxPho
Don't listen to people urging you to go. It can be crushingly lonely. It can also work out great.
TheStevetron
As someone who just moved continent alone, it seems scary but once you do you'll love it. I've already met so many cool people.
nogoat23
There's this thing called flash pack, where solo travelers can travel together. I want to do it, but I need to save up.
Undrave
Start somewhere nearby just to try. I went to Japan solo too, but I also went to Toronto a few years prior. It's fun to be free.
WhatADayWhatALovelyDay
Pretty much, I’d say my destination was what truly made it hard, as they neither speak French (main language) nor English in Japan, it 1/

In a English educated country, I wouldn’t have felt as stranded and lonely. Choose your first time wisely I guess. 3/3
isomericArabesque
This. It's supposed to be this amazing experience, but the thing that you come to realize is that the only thing that matters is people.
isomericArabesque
Everything else is just background noise, no matter how beautiful it may be...
WhatADayWhatALovelyDay
I like your take on it, thanks !

Japan is pretty comfortable though :p

Live on east coast, never happier then when alone wandering streets of DC or NYC for a weeknd while listening to music. Perfect 4 reflection

Sorry to hijack your post, I want to getaway for a weekend but feel weird going alone. Has anyone gone on adventures alone? Was it fun?
northcarolinaisbeststate
I haven't but I know a ton of people who did. They love it. Sometimes you just need to get away from it all for a bit.
WhatADayWhatALovelyDay
I’d say a getaway weekend/week alone sounds awesome ! My month getaway was awesome mostly, it just was a bit too long
sauciergymnast
As someone who worked alone traveling the US for 5 years with tons of downtime, it really takes getting used to. Having great experiences

But no one to share them with can really bring you down at times, but I only felt that way during certain times. Other times it's very fun,

It’s better to have 4 quarters than 100 pennies when you consider friends and family in your life.

Some of us don't have an option and only have 2 pennies, and memes. Sweet sweet memes.

I like this saying. I've just been saying "its better to have quality over quantity when ur taking about friends" this is much better!
muramaza
It adds up to a dollar either way...
Lightslinger42
But I bet you'd rather have a quarter than 25 pennies.
hotsaucemadhandles
However worse to lose a quarter than a penny
WhydidIdothisnow
When pennies are all you have, count to the nearest nickel.
LetMePickMyTeethThenHaveMoreChips2
As a Canadian I no longer have access to pennies, but at least I have my loonie.

Replying to this so I can go back and reread it every now and then. Thank you for your wise words.

Found one of the pennies!

In legal value yes, but one is way more valuable in usefulness. You can't use pennies on parking meters or vending machines or for laundry

I absolutely fucking hate pennies
DrunkQuokka
Trash. Is it littering to drop a penny?

Yes, $5 fine

I use to too but I started putting them in my mouth, don't mind them anymore and it helps build my immune system (me thinks)

Well if the first metaphor holds up, that half-dollar means a lot to you and the pocket lint always comes back no matter how often you >

Pocket lint only shows up when it needs money or to bum dinner. Lol
