Now don't get me wrong, I want her to be all right and I want her to make a full recovery, but it always bothered me that she never wore a seat belt, and she even got my father into not wearing his. They're both heavy set people, so buckling up was always difficult and a little uncomfortable, but I remember growing up and he'd always make sure I was using my seat belt before I drove anywhere. Luckily he wasn't in the car when she got in the wreck.

She's got several small injuries, but her big problem is a couple of fractures in vertebra in her back. They aren't messing with her spinal cord, but it is painful and is looking like she'll need surgery (for what exactly, I don't know).

At this point, I'm trying to do what I can for my dad while he's at the hospital with her and I'll do what I can when she finally comes home.

TL;DR Wear your seatbelts, kids.

Edit 1: So she doesnt need surgery. Just a brace. Not sure for how long.

Edit 2: Holy shit, this blew up. I cant believe I made it out of user sub. What do people usually ask for on viral posts? Oh, that's right. Kitties and tit-[character limit reached]

Who doesn't use seat belts anymore?

It feels strange now if i don't put it on.

Am i missing something, isnt it the law?

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My cousin's leg was shattered when a passenger flew across the car into her. It's not just your own ass you're saving

Buckle up Buckaroo!

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Understandable. If you just don’t wear a seatbelt then you’re pretty much asking to be injured. Hope she learns from the experience.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My mom also refuses to wear a seatbelt, even though her sister nearly died in a car wreck from not wearing one. I refuse to drive without ..

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

EVERYONE wearing one.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

‘Heavyset’ is no excuse. I’m beyond heavyset. I’m a fat food-loving gamer. I don’t leave my driveway without a seatbelt. Ever.

6 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

I was in a crash while wearing a seat belt and it saved my chest collapsing on the steering wheel. Belted I was out of work for over a week.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I'm a fattie. I -always- wear my seatbelt. No excuses.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They sell seat belt extenders for bigger people. It would be a hard sell, but it might save their lives.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

She's a danger to other passengers by not buckling up.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Seatbelts must be fastened in the UK. You can get fined for driving without one on, unless you have a valid medical exemption.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's the same in much of the US.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think they can also give you points on your license now too. 12 points or more and you're banned from driving for at least a year.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Who the fuck is that fucking lazy and stupid?

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

How do people still not wear a belt? I also don't get people that don't wear a helmet while bicycling. Be safe ppl.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

There's still people today not wearing a seatbelt?!?!?!

6 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Some of them say they *want* to be thrown through the windscreen in a crash. They *want* that to happen.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Morons are born every minute.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's my life I'll risk it however I want. People on donor lists need people like me.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

You're risking other peoples' lives too though. If you get thrown out of the car you could land on someone else or cause another accident.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

With the way I drive I'm more than likely gonna be liquid before I reach another vehicle.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Some learn the hard way, some serve as an example for bad choices at least.

See kids that's what happens when Jesus takes the wheel! Now buckle the fuck up!

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My favourites are those 2 that got pancaked. Better to be inside a rolling wreck than to be outside crushed by one.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also funny that the one ejected first is the last one to land. Wear your seatbelts.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not wearing a seat belt is a clear indication of sub 80 IQ.

6 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

injury specialist here: please wear your seatbelt. Those pictures of the deadly car crash are haunting.

6 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

I maxed out at 414lbs and abso-fuckin-lutely still wore my seatbelt.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I sit there and don’t turn the car on until the person in the passenger seat has their seatbelt on. Not in my car.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I get made fun of for wearing a seatbelt all the time but it was drilled into me as a kid. I feel weird without it

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

What kind of person makes fun of someone for wearing a seat belt?

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Are you the driver? Why not slam the brakes when the passenger isn't looking ahead. "There was a dog. Is your nose broken or just bleeding?"

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Who the fuck doesn't wear a seatbelt? I've honestly never been in a car with someone who didn't put theirs on

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Right? I've never even heard anyone complain about it except for my toddlers, who have no choice.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I won’t ride with people who don’t wear seatbelts. I don’t need to get hit with their body before the crash ejects them

6 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 1

over here at least the driver is responsible for making sure everyone is wearing seatbelts, can get fined + license suspended if caught

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

There's videos of unbuckled passengers flying and hitting the other passengers. One haunting one is an unbuckled dad crushing his son.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

So many people don't believe it's a thing though. "Oh they just hit the seat and stop" or "It's just my life at risk, I'll take my chances"

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Tbf, I didn't believe it was a thing in my teens and early twenties. Took me a bit to wake up, and consider how momentum and gravity work.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As someone who has consistently said the latter...wake up call

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

@OP They make inconspicuous seatbelt extenders for people with limited range of motion. Hopefully something like that could help them.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I looked into them because the buckle for my kid's seat is hard to reach. They're not legal anywhere in Europe, I gave up on it.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh interesting. Although not wearing any seatbelt is also illegal...may be the lesser of two evils if you can get your hands on some :/

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It might be possible to find one when going through the car dealer. None of the ones I found on Amazon were certified.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sometimes people get in my car and say they don't need a seat belt. Sometimes my car magically can't move forward until they buckle it.

6 years ago | Likes 768 Dislikes 8

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same. It's weird how the key won't turn in the ignition, or how the gear lever refuses to leave neutral if the engine's already running.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In the Netherlands there's a €95 fine for not wearing a seatbelt, and the driver is responsible. so yeah, not wearing one is illegal.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Sometimes mine accelerates to 15-20 mph and then abruptly stops. Weirdest thing.

6 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 0

hey, this is my parking lot go-to safety maneuver for organ donors!

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My uncle doesn’t like to. I tell him I don’t care about him but I don’t want his lifeless corpse flung about to hurt me and mine.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I do the same. Until everyone has their seatbelt the car moves

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

That's what I learned in driving class.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My Mum would do this when we were kids- that the car wouldn't be able to start without our seatbelts on

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I’m an EMT, seen my share of ejections. I refuse to drive until every passenger is buckled. Nobody argues it

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ha! My kids HAAAATED this rule. Also car will pull over & wait until EVERYONE in car is buckled up...my kids now have same rule in their car

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Yup, if you want a lift in my car the options are: belt on or walk

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I like to brake-check those people at low speed before we get to the actual road. They buckle up pretty quick then.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Good call. In an accident the unbuckled dummy can be thrown about the cabin and hurt everyone else. So if anybody refuses, you can tell them

6 years ago | Likes 196 Dislikes 0

To buckle up for your safety, not their own. Thats what i do lol

6 years ago | Likes 94 Dislikes 0

Will use, thank you!

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I tell them the car stays in park until they buckle up. If they don’t like it they can walk.

6 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 0

Truth. Also why I like to be a driver.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

My car will literally bing until you put it on, and the longer it’s not on the louder and more incessant the binging becomes.

6 years ago | Likes 57 Dislikes 0

My car doesn't bing, but I will. Louder, more obnoxious every moment.

6 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 0

Do it, video it, post it. I will give you one internet point if you do.

6 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

bing, Bing, BIng, BINg, BING, BING!, BING!!, FUCKING BIIIIIIING!!!!!!

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

3 rules to my car. Seatbelt, no food or open drinks while we’re moving, my car - my radio.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My uncle was killed in a car accident when he was 15.only one not wearing his belt, everyone else survived 9 rolls.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 4

I always tell them I don't care if they get hurt in a wreck I just don't want their body weight thrown around the car and hurting me.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

As an 8 year old, our family car rolled, and I was left hanging upside down by the seatbelt. Never forgotten to wear one since.

6 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 1

Was hit, car rolled and landed upside down. I was strangled by my seatbelt. I wear mine, but very loosely now.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 12

How do your wear a seatbelt "loosely"?

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Pull it just a little bit more until it clicks, Fit not not tight. Not as tight as it was when it nearly killed me.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nice way to get severe seat belt syndrome in a crash

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not loose like a hula hoop. Just one click past tight.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also, don't be so fat that buckling up is difficult and uncomfortable.

6 years ago | Likes 138 Dislikes 18

Seatbelts are made for any size if you cant fit in the car then maybe the belt wont fit

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The fatest people I have known all wear their seatbelts, so I don't see excuse. One needed an extender on her belt, but even then, used it.

6 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

I remember I used to be worried about my large body bouncing around the car in a crash and hurting others so I wore mine. lol

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Tbf, my friends car is a Ford escape and the rear passenger seat belts are unbearable no matter your size, if you lean forward 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

About an inch or so, it will trigger the seat belt lock and proceed to tighten until the seatbelt is removed. 2/2

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Weight is not a choice. If buckling up is uncomfortable that is a failure on behalf of the manufacturer and they deserve to be sued.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 17

Weight is complicated as mental ilness and other things makes it hard to manage

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Weight is not a choice seems the wrong way to word what you mean, I've significantly changed my weight a few times

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do you want a trophy? Just because your body is kind enough to allow you that option doesn't mean everyone else is the same way

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

We don't say humans can't walk because some are paralyzed. Isn't weight a choice for the overwhelming majority? No need for anger!

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No. You're not kind to your body when you abuse it. I bet you couldn't go a day without eating.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You chose to put a cheeseburger in your mouth over and over. I chose to eat shit for a decade and lost it all by only eating one meal and a

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Snack and fasting for the rest of the day and not eating on weekends. It's definitely a choice.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

While I can't speak for her, my dad has been working to get his weight under control, but with his job, it doesnt always work out.

6 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 3

They're going to make her lose weight before surgery.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Doesnt always work out" haha

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Job never had anything to do with it. But a salad instead of the burger. Calories in

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How does his job affect it?

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

He carries most of his weight in his legs, and as a truck driver, he isnt home enough to work out regularly or go to a gym.

6 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 3

And semis arent exactly known for being spacious.

6 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 2

lotta truckers in my family. if theres any space behind the cab he could bring a bike and ride around while his truck gets loaded

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He could control it mostly with diet, without touching a gym. Sometimes zero sodapop is enough to do it.

6 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 5

Losing weight via exercise is a long, hard, and slow process. All he has to do is eat less but it's hard being hungry most of the time.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The medical term for someone who doesn't wear a seatbelt is "organ donor".

6 years ago | Likes 1811 Dislikes 15

Not if their organs turn to scrambled eggs

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm an organ donor partly because I never wear a seatbelt. It's my life I'll do what I want with it, the organs others can have.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Only works if the organs don't get destroyed.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The medical term for someone who doesn’t wear a seatbelt and isn’t an organ donor is ‘useless fuckin idiot’.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Trauma alert

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As long as it isn’t their brain being donated I am good with this.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Human crayon.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hopefully there will still be some usable organs if that's ever the case.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Shit that’s all a plus! I might get to die and my parts will be used to help others, I’m in!

6 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

Might I suggest a motorcycle. Sans-helmet.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Or "donorcycles" as the ER refers to them.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

yay youll finally be useful!!

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wouldn’t it be more likely that the organs are damaged and unusable without seatbelts?

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Not if the person smacks the head hard enough. Which is why motor cycle riders, esp without helmet, are prime material

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes, but they are even more likely to be brain dead, so any usable organs can be harvested.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes but the flesh and bones absorb most of the impact.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, but not everything is damaged every time. But they’ll scoop out your eyeballs or your liver or something. Salvage

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Somebody call

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Human Hamburg

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same thing for motorcyclists that don't wear helmets

6 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

That’s the funniest thing about florida. If you want insurance, you don’t need a helmet, if you don’t want insurance, just wear a helmet.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

“Donor cycle” was frequently used in the ER of my hospital

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

After a certain speed, a helmet ain't gonna do shit.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

That speed is well over the speed limit anywhere in the US anyway. Sure when you get up over 150 MPH or so...

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It actually depends on the crash a motorcycle youtuber by the name of yammie noon had a head on collision with a Porsche going some where 1/

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

100+mph went 25 up on the air and survived with a busted leg. He has a video talking about it. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wja2RZUXH4w

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have mixed feelings about Yammie. He has smartened up since his accident though and at least he didn't kill anyone being dumb.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You get an upvote!!

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Im torn on the seatbelt thing, my buddy flipped his truck was ejected from the vehicle and got a broken back, but his lifted truck crushed

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The roof to the floor, would have been fatal if he was still in the truck

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You have to die in the hospital for that. After declared dead, they have a very short time to hook you up to machines to keep your body aliv

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

I concur. You have to basically be in a vegetative state and meet candidacy requirements before they will let you die and harvest

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yep, no idea why i'm downvoted. it's common practice.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hate them. I have an awful uncomfortable feeling of being strapped in. Been fortunate in two accidents, one being my truck flipping.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 20

I imagine being lunched through the windshield might be even more uncomfortable.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Well, sounds like you should take the bus, or at least not travel with anyone else in the vehicle ever because you’re putting them at risk.

6 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

she right tho

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Except not, of course

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

I’m not sure if that’s a sarcastic comment or serious, but if it’s serious, then I’m glad :)

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was being serious

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The bad thing is, I think she has it set up to be a organ donor.

6 years ago | Likes 207 Dislikes 1

The sad thing is, depending on how large she is, they won't take a lot of her organs

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Won't do much good if her organs are trashed in an accident bad enough to kill her.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thought you had to be in top notch shape to be a organ donor

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There are not enough organs to go around, and people with bad conditions like cancer wont get picked for good organs.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm an organ donor...

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I'd like a liver, a heart and 2dm² skin please

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The way you describe her (to fat for a seat belt), more than her cornea, maybe lunge, might not be useful...

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

If I need a donor organ to live, I'm not going to be picky. He also said heavyset, not too fat for a seatbelt. But if my choices are >>

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

<< definitely die due to my heart, or probably die from a poor donor heart, I'll take my chances with the donor.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Bottom line is: if I die in a hospital because my heart failed, and someone decided that the headless horseman who was too stupid to wear >>

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Actually, would that be bad or ironic? Both?

6 years ago | Likes 142 Dislikes 1

she's just planning for the inevitable.

6 years ago | Likes 53 Dislikes 0

Convenient is the word your looking for

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My health insurance will pay 100% of vehicular accidents if a seat belt was worn at the time of the accident. 0% is paid if it wasn’t worn.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It’s a good thing. When she inadvertently kills herself from stupidity she’ll be able to help out someone else.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I mean, it's good to be an organ donor, but I understand your point.

6 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Would the organ only be good for a fellow obese person? Serious question here..

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not a doctor, but googled. Journal of the Amer. Heart Assoc. finds no ill effects of receiving an obese person's heart in a transplant. 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That’s not a bad thing. Being registered to be an organ donor is never a bad thing, unless you live in China.

6 years ago | Likes 63 Dislikes 3
