Took me a minute to find the article I originally read. It wasn't his personal vehicle, he did it as part of his job. I sympathize with how expensive it can be to fix emission issues, I've had to deal with it myself. "hundreds of heavy-duty trucks, including state-owned vehicles." Is less excusable.

They definitely weren't the corporations. Some of the shops doing the bypass mods could be considered large by the standards of normal independent shops, they were a fairly small group. The actual corps producing the vehicles were the ones who put the emissions control systems in due to emissions regulations, and the fact that rolling coal is terrible from a warranty standpoint due to soot buildup causing issues.

Yes. This particular one wasn't, but it's an ongoing battle to permit entities to pollute, to eviscerate the EPA, to prioritize profits over damage to the environment. The executive has already defunded the EPA and put a former oil lobbyist at its head. The DOJ has dropped cases against corps. SCOTUS has decided that regulatory agencies created by Congress can't do anything. It's a full court press, and it benefits those corps a whole lot more than it does Joe's Auto Body shop

Automakers have moved to lock things down even more, for two reasons. One is the warranty issue mentioned before, but also to keep independent shops from accessing full diagnostic information. The bypassed sensors, which work on simple signals, are being moved to 'smart' CANBUS connected sensors. They have also begun encrypting that CANBUS network, which makes diagnosis extremely difficult. The ECUs are also coming with much stronger encryption. They don't want _anyone_ doing modifications.

You've decided to restrict it to automakers here, which is ok, but also I'm not sure what point you're making. The executive action is consistent here. They're not regulating the manufacturer to allow a ''right to repair' and they're reducing regulation on the downstream guys as well. In the end, the policy as a whole will allow the big players>
