Why would the seat need to move independent of the ship?
djangojazz
Now WTF don't they make more of shit like this and Krull from my child hood? I saw this in the theatres and loved it
jammer909
So that bit in ReBoot with the gun and adult Enzo is a "The Last Starfighter" reference? Well, TIL.

Terrific. I'm about to get killed a million miles from nowhere with a gung-ho iguana who tells me to relax.

Alex didnt move because the ship rotated around him. Grig must have been whipped like cream back there.

Oh shit that term takes me back,
‘Death Blossom’ was what we’d call it when we were in Iraq- some people under fire would freak out and start shooting in all directions, fucking scary because you can’t shoot your allies but you kinda really want to in the moment 😂
101Medic
Yes! I heard it a few times while I was in and NO ONE knew the reference.
DeityFalkor
Best conversation around this I ever had with an 18 year old.
Me: "Greeting Starfighter!"
Them: "What?"
Me: "Have you never seen The Last Starfighter?"
Them: "I never saw the first one "

There's an Easter egg in a scene in the fifth season of The Expanse. When they put the ship into a spin to allow their turrets to shoot down incoming torpedoes, the camera briefly cuts to showing the pilot console; there's a line on one display showing the current maneuver as "Death Blossom".
avenlanzer
They did so great with that show. I miss it already.
studog2010
That's what I was thinking when it happened, but I didn't spot the display. I'll have to rewatch
unluckyandbored
It was also referenced in the game Overwatch. The character Reaper's ultimate move is called "Death Blossom" and it involves him firing his weapons in all directions, hitting anything that gets too close.
sochilln
I never understood why they didn't have a part 2 of this film. My 8yo self, back in the day, really wanted another movie!
quietwalker
I could see it as a 1-shot, but, what I was most surprised about was that Lance Guest wasn't in like 100 more films than he was. Rewatch it, and even with the 80's era style of over-emoting, he was just an excellent actor. Like, some of the other characters, yeah, obviously they're going to be extras in 80's movies and then become, I dunno, real estate agents or something, but he had chops.
DarthWaiterSE
Well, he did go on as Mike Brody to fight a giant shark and avenge the killing of his younger brother Sean. And he was researching ocean snails with Mario Van Peebles!
quietwalker
Revenge of Jaws was, frankly, beneath him. He deserved waaaay better than that.

I made my kids watch this with me. “Dad, this is sooo photoshopped!” They actually thought it was pretty cool.

I didn't realise until years later, he was the old man in RoboCop 1 & 2.

It was an ambitious movie at the time and still a comforting nostalgia trip today.

There was a scene in the tv show Reboot where Enzo Matrix activates his gun in Death Blossom mode, I didn't know it was a reference from The Last Starfighter.

Reboot is where I know it from and was the first thing I thought of. Learned the reference when reading the IMDB trivia for Reboot long ago.

That CGI was some of Pixar's early work.
inthepines
It was actually done by Digital Productions using the Cray supercomputer. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Productions
CyberWizard252
That's interesting! I didn't realize that.
I read a book on Pixar that claimed that The Last Starfighter was one of their early projects.
Sooner70
If there was ever a movie begging for a remake with a massive online game tie-in, this is the one. Loved that movie (although I must be the only person that thought Death Blossom was a cop out solution to end the battle).
Revyloution
Death Blossom is awesome because it's exactly what a 5 year old kid would think of
Sooner70
I guess that's the problem? I was a teenager when the movie came out....
astrangehop
Iirc it's a decent double. He gets to destroy the enemy army at a point where that seems impossible, and it drains the ship of power and weapons, mandating the in person confrontation.
FlavorIntensifies
The game on NES was dope too
RedTwoX
No! No!No!No!... Not a remake, a sequel where we get to see Alex and Maggie's kids (or maybe grand kids at this point) rebuild the Star League. The last I looked, those two actors (Lance Guest and Catherine Mary Stewart) are still alive. I'm not sure if they would have any interest in acting again (both have IMDB credits in the last two years), but I wish someone would ask.
DarthWaiterSE
Since he's 64 now, I'd say a teenaged grandkid could be the next startfighter, someone around 16 or 17 would be fine. Don't even bother putting the parents in the picture, just have a couple of grandkids helping out at Grandma and Grandpa's hippie commune.
RedTwoX
Something happened to Mom and Dad. Lost on in battle or shuttle crash on a diplomatic mission. There's a statue for them at Star League head quarters. There's a dispute between the grand kids: some want to carry on the family legacy, while others think the family has sacrificed enough. This happens over the political/military drama of rebuilding the League and debate on whether or not Earth is ready to be brought in. However, don't get too heavy. Stay with the "feel" of the original.
StellarJay77
Or the grandkids have no knowledge of the Star League and their parent's involvement. All they know is their parents were away a lot and weren't able to be there for them much of the time because they were off protecting Earth and the rest of the league planets from invasion. They are left in their grandparent's care after their parents go missing and the grandparents need to let the kids in on the family secret and help train them to go rescue their parents.
DarthWaiterSE
Just don't do The Cringe where Grandpa hooks up an old Starfighter arcade cabinet. Let that idea get crumpled up and thrown in the trash pile. In fact, don't even write it down. Don't acknowledge this post. Don't any of it. Don't.
