The concrete was wrapped in paper to prevent it from making suspicious noise when the nut was shaken. The vendor who sold the walnuts was trying to make more profit by selling these fake nuts that were heavier and “nothing”.
Some unscrupulous companies in China were found to produce and make tons of money by selling fake eggs. They look almost like the real thing, slimy before cooking and turns like cooked eggs when cooked. A fake hard-boiled egg can actually bounce when you throw it, like a rubber ball. These fake eggs are made of gelatin, artificial food coloring, water and encased in a wax egg shell.
Apparently, the rice is made by mixing potatoes with a synthetic industrial resin which can be deadly. According to unfortunate victims who ate the rice, it stayed fairly firm even after being cooked extensively, and was hard to digest, causing many stomach problems. Burn the rice using a matchstick and see if you smell plastic burning. Or drop the rice into boiling hot oil and see if it dissolves into the oil.
ome vendors have sold pork meat as beef by chemically altering the beef with a “beef extract”, and then glazing them to look like beef. All done in a 90-minute process. Doctors have advised people to stay away from this fake beef as its consumption may cause slow poisoning, deformity and even cancer!
Chinese food sellers are adding chemicals to meat from rats, minks, and foxes and selling them as mutton. The scheme was so popular and successful that the police arrested more than 900 people and seized about 20,000 tons of this meat, all within three months.
There are two types of counterfeit honey: the adulterated one, which is a mixture of real honey and sugar syrup, beetroot syrup, or rice syrup; and the fake honey, which looks very much like real honey that it may be difficult to differentiate them.
Fake green peas were created from snow peas, soy beans, along with green dye and sodium metabisulfite (a chemical that is used as the bleach and preservative). This dye is banned from using on produce because it can cause cancer, as well as inhibit the body’s natural ability to absorb calcium. You can tell these fake green peas that don’t soften when boiled and the water will turn an unnatural green color leached from the food coloring.
Ginseng root is a popular medicinal plant, used as a tonic in China for centuries. Ginseng is a very expensive commodity, pushing many ginseng retailers to figure out a way to keep making profit.
Their solution was to boil the roots in sugar, which makes them heavier and, therefore, they can sell them for more money as the roots are sold by weight.

You forgot about the company that was adding polymer to milk so that it appeared to have required protein enrichment.

Now this is entrepreneurship. The walnut man... Smart! The egg guy however.. let's see him in the dragons den.

'plastic' rice is a myth, saw a documentary on it

So are the eggs (I mean, come on, that's a lot of work for something that comes out of a chicken's butt)

Fucking China, is there anything they won’t counterfeit?
usernametakenisthestoryofmylife
You'd think it would be more costly to make fake eggs than to just harvest real ones.
angelccccccc
I‘ve personally witnessed people attatching small frilly roots onto a young ginseng root with normal glue to make it look older. 1
angelccccccc
2They don‘t even try to hide it, peole just do it at the counter because the government doesn‘t regulate these things
nukemall
Makes soylent green look good by comparison.

I would like to add gutter (cooking) oil to this list. It's exactly what it sounds like.

Aaaaaand that's why I don't buy food made in China

Food security is a big deal. US food companies have whole divisions that test food imports. Soo much is fake/watered down/contaminated.
CompressedInfo
A great deal of crime is also routinely under-punished in China relative to other countries, even other autocracies
CompressedInfo
The primary role of the police in China is to protect the stability of the Communist Party, not to enforce the law impartially and fairly
CompressedInfo
Crimes that are individually tangential to that mission (i.e. most low-level crime) is therefore not a high priority
CompressedInfo
But these small low-level crimes, in aggregate and routinely unpunished add up to a regime stability threat they don't possess individually
CompressedInfo
Any one instance of food adulteration is more of a nuisance than anything else to the party and criminals have figured this out
BerwynBrewyn
Um, that sounds more expensive and more trouble than real eggs.

TL:DR Don't buy food in china

Lived there, never seen anything like this. Its bullshit. Eggs, rice, are stupid cheap and i dont think I even saw greenbeans

When someone suggests regulation-free market solves all problems, direct them here
MachineInterface
China doesn't a regulation-free market. It has very strict food regulation laws, and significant difficulties in enforcing them.
thoushaltnotpass
If they pull that shit while it's illegal, imagine the kind of sawdust they'd sell in the bread if it was 100% unregulated
cowboycoco
One could argue that unenforced regulation is indistinguishable from unregulated.
removekarling
You could argue that but the tards that think that a regulation free market is good won't believe it.
nanyatenyaa
You mean corruption? That there corruption is awesome.

You can't say you are Chinese unless you've eaten everything on the periodic table

Fake egg story has been disproved on Skeptics Guide. I wouldn’t be surprised if more of these turn out to be fake too.
snakeoilsalesman
Yeah, it's a lot of effort to go through.
Raecracy123abc
For some like the eggs it just didn't seem cost efficient to be a scam
perchingbird
Eggs are stupid cheap there. It helps that ducks and chicken are a primary food source
GenGeorgePatton
Rice is too.
SnickersArmstrong
It comes from a story about them seizing genuinely fake plastic rice that turned out to be expensive display fake-plastic-rice.

FaultyStarsNoConstellations
Here in Denmark, we have a lot of chinese tourists, and it has become a problem that they buy ALL our organic babyfood and re-sell 1/2
nanyatenyaa
That's a local problem in China as well, buying it in Hong Kong is regulated, where as the rest of China deals with questionable shit.
nanyatenyaa
And by regulated I mean it's safe and one is only allowed to buy so much baby formula to prevent a shortage.
CptnRayHolt
while that causes crappy problems, how horrifying it must be to not be able to trust the local food supply is poisonous or regulated
FaultyStarsNoConstellations
Oh I get why they do it, and I would do the same
FaultyStarsNoConstellations
It for crazy amounts to the newly Rich back in china because that way they can be sure it’s clean and healthy for the babies 2/2
FromDenmarkWithHate
We just recently implemented maximums for what they cna buy, but they are so stupidly high it doesn't really make sense.
AnitaNewusername
It in the back so you have to request it at the counter. The store I went to only sold to you if you had a baby with you. All stores have2/?
LaBix
Stores here (UK) had to limit how much a customer could buy. It got crazy how much it was selling for on eBay before they had to ban it.
AnitaNewusername
Same here in the Netherlands. Our shops have rules now. At some shops you have to spend 25 euro in order to buy formula. Other shops have1/?
AnitaNewusername
A maximum. Most stores let you buy two boxes, other stores only one even! It's a nightmare. Thankfully my daughter turned 1 couple weeks ago

I am suddenly very thankful for the FDA.
Ryvienna
I was always sick in China from some sort of food poisoning.
BlackavarLion
For how much longer will we have the FDA?
JGGennedy
No one likes HOAs until they try to sell their house and their neighbor doesn't look like shit. Same with OSHA and major accidents.
Mintendo64
I still hate HOAs.
EyesOnICE
Yeah....
PleaseAMArelatedtomachining
Trump has already slashed their funding, FDA enforcement capacity is not what it should be at all
SuperBeetle76
From what I know the FDA is more of a joke than protection. Tons of highly profitable poisons in our food allowed by the FDA.
EyesOnICE
Just follow the money and see who lines their pockets then you will find the answers
SuperBeetle76
Yes indeed.
TheyCallMeElTopo
Given how lax they are with growth hormones and MSM/LFTB in the US, I'm even more thankful for how (sometimes ridiculously) strict Europe is
JakeParalta
Minus the fact they don't actually test anything, rather leave it to the "trustworthy" companies to test on their own. But they do regulate
Scandeliciously
This! They set out rules but never checks anything.
GeneralMess
And yet the US still battle against the EU ban on US beef infected with growth hormones that's legal in the US.

I’m more concerned about the antibiotic injections.

Let's all enjoy it while we can.

Take it back right now. The FDA approved you to eat Sheetrock, as filler in products of high demand. Enjoy your wall spackle tofu
DrArbitrary
Is there any reason why gypsum would be unsafe as a coagulant in tofu? Probably unsafe to breathe, but it's not toxic.
TehGoon
I’m unsure. (No trying to be an ass) I do believe it’s those kind of deductions that lead China to its food issues they’re now experiencing.
khora
But hasn’t it been used as filler for hundreds of years?
TehGoon
I’ve had food for walls my whole life?!

No really we had this shit before Upton Sinclair and etc. And libertarians think zero reg is a good idea...
breakingcode
Libertarians don't oppose regulation, we support regulation that's impartial, intelligently focused and correctly funded..
TheLetterKay
Libertarians aren't fighting to abolish the FDA but to eliminate it being funded by the companies they inspect. Because this leads to them
PudgyPinkiePie
That would in fact be the direct opposite of stated libertarian goals: getting rid of federal regulations.
TheLetterKay
Being paid to pass stuff off that shouldn't be.
TheLetterKay
Also the FDA rarely does testing themselves unless a major problem occurs. Each company submits their own test results and the FDA gives a
TheLetterKay
Pass or a fail. Which means the companies can just test on what they know will pass and let everything else slide through.
