I realize having an ignition key is getting less common, much less one without a chip, but this is hysterical, even if it dates me!

Whaaat? No waaay..

For certain fords with imobilisers (mk1 focus to Mk3s, mk3 mondeos, etc) the chip is a capsule, so you could take it out the key, drill a 1/

hole in the screwdriver and stick it in, and have an imobilised screwdriver key! 2/2

My dad used to have dozens of keys on his ring. So heavy, it stripped the ignition on his 80s truck so badly, you could just turn it with your hand without a key in it. I used to poke fun at it by using anything within arm's reach as a "key". A phonebook, a plush baseball, an orange, a hammer...he never thought it was as funny as I did.

for the record, he was wrong.

This would work with my current car. I need this.

I had a Buick wagon that you could start with absolutely no key. someone saw how worn key was and was like "there's no way you need this anymore" so we went and tried it. amazing discovery.

When I was a teen way back in the mid-90's, I had an old beat up Buick Century to drive. One day the key broke off in the ignition. But all you had to do was turn it and it would start. Then word got out about it in my tiny high school. People took it all the time to get donuts or cigs and I never knew where it would be reparked . I finally just left a note in it and said, 'park it in the corner by the tennis courts' so I knew where to look. Good times.

had a buddy that started his astro with a pair of needle nose pliers

Had a friend who had that for his old shitbox Chevy Citation, except he didn't have to go through the trouble of welding a key to it, just shoved the screwdriver in there and off he went. Kept it in the glove box because who the hell would steal a Chevy Citation?

...I think I'll do that with a stubby screwdriver. Less strain on the ignition cylinder

much less convenient to carry, thank you +1

Leave it in the car around some other junk. People will probably overlook it completely.

I'd always leave it in the ignition with the doors unlocked in my Corolla. Never got stolen, not sure why!

Much more difficult to lose. 😉

Some Kia and Hyundai cars don’t have a chipped key in the U.S. and Canada. That’s why there’s a class action lawsuit. The key cylinders are held in by a small spring-loaded pin that can be broken easily. The Kia Soul is particularly vulnerable to this attack.

I have a few USB drives that look like cut USB cords. I cut off cords from old USB devices, carefully slice the sides at the seams, and remove the old USB A port. Then I remove the case off a low profile USB drive, and hot glue it in the cable. It throws IT people off hilariously. I call it an "Nth dimensional storage matrix" and the only other one I've seen was made by the guy I stole the idea from.

In high school, we figured out we could start a friend's 1981 Ford Taurus Wagon with a popsicle stick, we'd move his car to different parking spot during lunch and act like it had been there the whole time when he'd be confused. He eventually caught us in the act and begrudgingly laughed it off.

Except for those of us who had not one, not two, but three vehicles stolen (actually one they didn’t get because I started removing the lead from the distributor but still had to fix the ignition). But hahaha anyway

I installed a kill switch on my 82 Firebird to prevent, ahem, unauthorized use.

Wow, a car key and a prison shank. Does it fit in a prison pocket?

We start our old Ford like this but it's just a regular screwdriver. Clapped out ignitions for the win.

2 years ago | Likes 95 Dislikes 1

Huh, I need to check that on my old truck

Buddy amongst our group had a turdstang when we where in our teens, he was fully unaware of his clapped out ignition and never knew why butter knifes started randomly showing up in his car, lol

Had a car like that, eventually replaced the screwdriver with a push button.

My uncle put in a light switch, did the job I suppose

After my old Jeep Cherokee was stolen, I started it with a screwdriver for weeks, before a new lock cylinder arrived and I got it installed. Good times

When I was a kid we had a screwdriver in the glove box of the Oldsmobile, it was for the kids to unscrew some cap off the engine and stick the screw driver in a hole to make some flap stay open. Car wouldn't start unless we did that. The other kids got a kick out of it at Sunday morning hockey.

This is technically a remix to ignition.

All that weight hanging off the end. That poor key cylinder.

2 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 5

Definitely not good long term, but def good for a laugh

Absolutely

A screwdriver handle really isn't all that heavy. It's a lump of plastic with a short piece of steel rod inside.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

The leverage of the length of it. Plus, the constant movement from driving.

My GMC pickup needed a whole new steering column bc the ignition lock couldn't be replaced. Too many keys on the ring.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

90% of people with a big If set of keys hanging off their car key be like that

2 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

Weight hanging off the key near the cylinder is very different than that cantilevered handle.

“Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall break that key cylinder.”

In hindsight, I think a stubby would've been a better choice
