I've never worked with sapele, I'll have to check it out the next time I go grab some lumber. I've also never done any carving. I stick with small cabinetry & boxes, started with Michael Pekovich-inspired stuff but have since come to be very inspired by James Krenov (especially his philosophy of woodworking). It's just a hobby for me, but maybe someday I'll be confident enough to sell something.

How do you decide what species of wood to use? That looks like Oak which I would think would be hard on the knife and hard on your fingers since it would take more force to carve.

Pretty sure you can just buy some dead coral at the pet store, maybe even a local aquarium where it's more likely to be ethically sourced. Probably easier to shape into an effective stand than river rock, too.
