Honestly, it was fairly obvious that AI was coming. The writing was on the wall for a long time. With capitalism the way it is, why would any company want to pay a person to do what a computer will do for free?

Part of the problem with "AI is in everything now" is that what we have isn't AI, and it's not new. The "innovation" that makes generative AI work is just a training shortcut, it's the same algorithms we've had all along. So the C-suite is coming to the engineers and saying "we need to put AI in our product" and the engineers are saying "that's not AI, it's just a fancy classifier, hell, we already have tech like that in our product" and then the c-suite tells marketing to rebrand with AI

I got to see Windows "Click to Do" AI functionality today. It takes screenshots of your computer, then parses the text, and lets you select the text.

They put “AI” drive cams in our ambulances and they still have to have human reviewers because they suck and false alarm so often. The only reason they exist is to put more pressure on drivers so they’ll be less likely to take actions that might cost the company money by having a toaster yell at you constantly about your driving

You haven't noticed google results getting worse and worse over time? Haven't had your recommended videos on youtube get horrible skewed after watching a video someone linked to you and you didn't even finish? Look, AI has legitimate uses, especially when adding additional overview like with cancer screenings. But there's a difference between providing new and innovative ways of doing things, vs replacing working methods with worse but cheaper alternatives.

10 to 20ish years ago I could do a google search and it would search for the words I asked for, making it easy to find nearly anything quickly. Now, you're lucky to get some convoluted bullshit that vaguely references one of the words you were searching for and ignoring the rest of what you typed... and even then it's usually some site that's more word salad than useful in any way. Between SEO and AI it's completely gone to shit.

Except people are just not using customer service as much, they haven't stopped being customers. This is what I have seen all over, quality dips and no one stops buying because what else are you going to do? Instead we just save them money but not using their customer service agents

Another part to this is that companies had chatbots years before AI/LLM really blew up, there's also a long running trend to give other paths to do the task some other way (website, phone menu system, etc) with talking to a real (expensive) human as the last option. Where I think it gets annoying is trying to present "Hi, I'm Steve, how can I help you?" with the stock photo profile pic as a real person when it obviously isn't.

It's that now it's the 'cool new thing' so executives are just cramming it into everything and anything. From being on the inside of ecommerce I can absolutely state it's purely about getting away with the shittiest (cheapest) service they can. And with no one to complain to it's become irrelevant, because people generally don't stop buying from companies. The amount of AI interviews I have had which makes absolutely no sense, might as well send a questionnaire. It's just gotten dumb.

Like obviously any business is trying to lower their costs as much as possible, but from the outside one would think there is some lower limit to quality or services provided that needs to be met to maintain their brand image and so forth, but no there absolutely isn't. Not for these massive corporations and they set the standards for what the rest will try to emulate. So it's just a shit spiral with quality and service plummeting as prices rise for the vast majority of companies.

I'm also a teacher. High school science. AI is a whole new can of worms. The kids hate it... but if an easy cheating tool came around when you were 16, wouldn't you have used it? I don't blame them. But it's a new world.

"can't separate copyrighted material"? Fine. Anything made by an AI is subject to a flat tax that makes it comparable in cost to hiring a human.
That tax is accumulated and put towards a fund providing universal basic income, which is owed because they've taken peoples' work without permission and used it to put those people out of a job.

Shit, not often I'm caught off guard by an idea like this, but I think this sounds like a decent way to 1) mitigate AI's use as a means to replace employees 2) mitigate it's use in general, as the environmental, societal, and logistical atrocity it is right now and 3) ensure that anyone adversely affected by it can be reasonably taken care of. I mean, it'll never happen because of all that and more, but I'm sure you know already, and it's a good idea.
