I'm troubled by the word "associate" which doesn't imply any wrongdoing. We already know of many "associates", some very high profile including multiple former presidents, who haven't suffered for it. If all they do is name "associates", people will believe only the "associates" they already don't like are pedos.

Because people will immediately start accusing them of being pedophiles. Which we can all agree can harm someone's reputation. And you have a potentially false published statement. The only part of a defamation claim missing at that point (considering that the falseness of the statement has to be assumed to be false until proven otherwise), would be negligence. Whether the person stating it KNEW it was false and did it intentionally to cause the harm. Starting the lawsuit would at least be easy.
