The W (double U) wasn't invented until recently, and U and V were the same letter (W is double V in French), and so now imagine all the Latin V words, but use the U instead and that's how they sounded

#14 hey I do that too. With a fruit that 99.99% of the world calls a bean.
KrowWithAK
If we're being pedantic, it's the seed of a fruit that 99.99% of the world calls a bean.
SedatedSl0th
I live for being pedantic. I just didn’t want to get too deep. Giggity

#50, this criticism pissed me off, Captain Ake was begged to come out of retirement, and she did but to a Federation shed already seen fall once because shes hundreds of years old.
Shes not Captain Janeway, shes Yoda or maybe The Doctor.
And an addendum to #52: Chekovs Furniture. If you see a glass coffee table somewhere, someone is going thru it at some point. Theyre too dangerous to even have on a set otherwise.

Nah SFA was a giant pile of crap, There is not a redeemable character in it and this is from a pan dude who was stoked to see a gay klingon and dude was more of a cartoon than daffy duck

#12 yeah, hi. Can you fucking don't? This is my life cycle every 6 months these last 3 years and I'm starting to re-live again as of today.
ImAMeatPopcicle
I read it and wondered how the hell they got into my head. At least you're getting cycles. I've just been stuck in this perpetual state for the last few years. I really wish I could just go back to being blissfully unaware sometimes
KMakyra
The problem is my cycles never go as high as before and I've recently discovered that rock bottom's basement actually has 6 hidden sublevels. My coworker who lives in a halfway house has a saying with his buddy, no matter what horrible thing is happening to them it's "well, at least you're not Makyra". The running joke is that if I change my name everything will suddenly reverse.

#13 Call me crazy but, if I go to Japan (Im balls deep in language classes for it, including duo the murder owl) and I'm mispronouncing a word from their culture, I'd hope someone corrects me to say it the right way. It is their language after all, and my fickle feelings are not more important than the rhetoric that holds their language together.
TL;DR? It's not racist to want people to speak your language correctly when they travel to your home land. Its educational.
Aspernari
Especially when the speaker has a clear and obvious impediment that alters his ability to pronounce particular sounds.
Sh4dowWalker96
Sure, but accents changing how words sound is, uh. Still a thing.
Jyx123
Well we don't know where this conversation is happening. It could be happening in Transylvania/Wallachia(, Romania) and thus the count is doing his best to speak his guest's language.
BorkSamson
Thats a fair point.

#52 Schrodinger's gun - great advice you should live by, but probably treat it as loaded even if you checked it yourself.
kthnxbye22
Work at the firearms counter at Gander. Your buddy is showing a handgun to a customer. He (your buddy, the gun salesman) shoots a hole through the counter and into the floor, only into the floor, not into flesh. You finish that shift by yourself.
chansuke
When I introduce new people to firearms the very first rule I teach them is that if someone hands you a supposedly unloaded firearm they need to immediately check to make sure it is, in fact, unloaded. Even if they watched me check it five seconds before I handed it to them.
DarthWaiterSE
This was drilled into me by my grandfather, I man I deeply respected and admired; by the time I hit the military, I had range safety personnel and marksmanship instructors pulling me aside and asking me if I wanted to teach because I was *THAT* diligent about safety.
I was the only E3 in my class for PMI school and God help me, the instructors had a good time teasing me about my babyface.

My brother's ex-wife loves showing the hole in her kitchen wall from his "unloaded" gun.... and the second hole from when he proved it was THEN unloaded.

#41 Okay, someone tell me where to start with Terry Pratchett.
TheMountainIsBreathing
There's a lot of different opinions but I recommend "Guards! Guards!" (fantasy police) or "Going Postal" (con artist) or "Wyrd Sisters" (witches and royal murder).
HighSorcerer
I recommend the Colour of Magic myself but it depends on how you feel about wizards.
bripi
quite possibly the *only* Pratchett book I wouldn't recommend is Colour of Magic. Everything else is just better.
HighSorcerer
I mean I agree but they didn't ask what's good they asked where to start.
bripi
Okay but why encourage someone to start from the worst?

Maybe check out the videogame Strange Horticulture. Just saying.
ImAWeirdMom
You're the second to suggest this, it's on the switch so I'll be getting it
aslum
Yeah I saw the other suggestion after I'd already submitted and scrolled down. It's got some light puzzle elements but is pretty fun.
ImAWeirdMom
The puzzle bit is stumping me, but I like that. Thanks for the bonus suggestion.
piconuke
Have you ever heard of the game "Strange Horticulture" ? It's the opposite of extreme but it is quite delightful
aslum
Oh dang, you beat me to the recommend.
ImAWeirdMom
No but I'll be looking into it!
ImAWeirdMom
Thank you! I got it and am enjoying it!
piconuke
If you like it, they have a sequel of sort up, Strange Antiquities, which is more of the same but about artifacts instead of plants.
