Sure, AI will be useful and good one day, but it's currently not. When cars were a bit crap they didn't force everyone to using them and most used horses, trains and trams for a long time before switching. Car manufacturing also added production and skills to the economy, AI is doing the opposite
TheOnlyPtylerdactyl
It should really surprise no one that George Lucas of all people is excited to jump onto whatever the next new thing appears to be, for better or worse.
3rdoption
One of the many things George is horrendously wrong about.

Don't use it to write scripts, they're bad enough already

forced onto us by big business when cheaper, better alternatives exist? you're right, AI is a lot like cars.
McFrazzlestache
George Lucas has never been an artist. He's a businessman that had a wild dream one night and chose to write it down. Just so happens he was alive in a very generous time surrpunded by people who were way, WAY more receptive to random ideas. Cocaine is a hell of a drug.
LordHotPie
he's always been a shithead
OneMoreLime
See George that's where you're way off because replacing horses subtracted significant amounts of horse poop from the daily experience of living, Ai seeks to smear horse poop on ever digital surface possible.
usernametakenisthestoryofmylife
Did AI make you say that? Blink twice.
bippityboppitybuttsex
He is a billionaire, he has no idea what it is like to be a person.
wurstkaesescenario
that's the way it is
DiracsDelta
No. Embracing AI right now is like demanding that everyone uses cars in a world where highways, seatbelts, airbags, licenses/insurance, and emissions testing do not exist yet.
ps238principal
Remember when George said practical effects were the best and that changing movies was bad?

Wow a lot of people simping for AI
TheSlouchOfBethlehem
I'm just plain not using ai for anything, George, sorry.
Bojovnik84
Sure, but we need to prevent the future where it is used as a mass surveillance tool and destroying the Earth. We can take it back to simple videos of Will Smith trying to eat spaghetti.
DiracsDelta
Horses and Cars don’t threaten the water and power utilities.
Horses and Cars can’t redirect social media algorithm suppression and propaganda with the click of a button.
Horses and cars don’t advertise based on who gives them the most oats.
And while cars have uses, a lot fewer people die in 75mph horse wrecks.
Autittuderp
And how long was it before governments started REGULATING the car industry and they had to adhere to safety standards?
Do we learn from that or do we just roll over?
Clockworkdancerobot
Even with regulation, we've stacked up a huge debt because we focused on the car. major negatives in health, safety, and costs.
bippityboppitybuttsex
The difference is cars worked... cars reduced the poop on the street in the cities, dead horses weren't abandoned by their owners any more... Horses in cities were a plague.
Cars are better than horses. AI is not better than humans... hell, AI cannot do stuff a drunk toddler can.

SaturnineCult
Also, first years cars really sucked and horses did many things way better. Even now horses are better at certain specific tasks/terrains.
bippityboppitybuttsex
And AI has applications... but the idea that 'all of us need to embrace it' is silliness.
I love hand tools... I would much rather use a router plane than a powered router for some applications.... but for ripping wood, I am going to use a table saw.
Is AI a decent language parser for queries? Sure... does it lie? Absolutely.
SaturnineCult
One of the most annoying comments from some of those AI company guys was that "we can't wait what you do with these". Like, they are hammering it to us that we need it for everything, yet they have no idea what we would need it for.
bippityboppitybuttsex
I use AI on a regular basis, mostly arguing with Google Gemini on basic shit... I use Copilot to help write Powershell scripts.
I am not anti-AI... I am an anti-you will use it cuz you have to and also pay us.
No... I would rather do stuff myself than have AI fuck it up.
Umkontodon
We don't hate AI because we hate progress, we hate AI because of what it represent, how it is used, and the direction to which it might lead us.
rolliefingers
"What it represents" is too vague, but your other points are exactly what needs to be said.
AI is an amazing tool that is being used to help solve real problems.
The issue is it's been unleashed on the public as a toy, to enrich rapacious industrialists. Everyone uses it all the time, and that's why it won't stop without legislation or regulation, simple as that.
mondeca
AI isn't progress. It's theft, pollution, and graft.
rolliefingers
*generative AI
CuntCrotchula
And on top of that, it's not even good at it's job

And the horrific amount of water it uses while doing so.

But at least it also poisons the water

Remember that the Luddites didn't hate technology, they hated the use of technology to further exploit the workers.
DiracsDelta
Not to mention, automated looms and weaving machines were not going to significantly contribute to climate change, or restrict access to water and power.

Think ill start my own version of a Luddite or Amish type community. Less/no religion and basic technology. That seems like itd be nice.

At the rate ram and storage is being taken away, we might have to build it from scratch. A brand new 1970's style computer tech reawakening?
Freyja33
Y'all, remember the source, this guy is an idiot. The only reason the original Star Wars movies were any good was his ex-wife editing them. He has no goddamn idea what he's talking about.
lackinglife
Basically was gonna say the same thing. The first ones had people saying " no that's the dumbest thing I ever heard" to him and his ideas that were terrible. The same with indiana jones. The reason the later ones were.....what they were was he was enough of a big shot people couldn't say no anymore.
Chooseausernameandyoureallset
Except he does. Nowhere did he say LLMs. Nowhere did he say generative AI. Just AI. How about the AI that is fantastic at detecting cancer? How about AI that hasn't been built yet? Were the first computers some incredibly useful/valuable thing that every person should buy? No. And yet here we are and computers are baked into every aspect of daily life.

Which is why he released the remasters and you can't find the originals anywhere legitimate online. It's to get out of paying her any royalties
UpvotingtheHotButton
Ok, it is a DVD set of the original three movies, “Limited Edition” set published in 2006. A quick look at Ebay found the full set in new condition for $120 or each movie for around $40.
UpvotingtheHotButton
I will get back to you on that - I have a dvd set of the originals just before he fucked with the movies again. I will check the publication date.
rotodisc
Which is why Disney is releasing the original next year in theaters?
UpvotingtheHotButton
Original originals? Or the remastered originals? You can tell by the stormtroopers riding lizards on Tattooine (or not)
rotodisc
Original original. Or so we’ve been led to believe.

Or if Han's head suddenly moves three inches to the side from one frame to another to avoid Greedo's shot, which he didn't even fire in the OG OG

Technically the lizards were there in the original, just way in the background, silhouetted on the horizon.
