Okay, so I’ve been thinking about watching this show. But there are two versions. I’ve heard conflicting opinions on which version is better. Which would you recommend, random stranger on the internet?

I haven't seen the new one but I rank the original just outside my top 10. It is quite a lovely anime

The first two seasons of the original are covered in the first one season of the latest release. I'd watch the original because it gives more time and gives the show a slow burn, which heightens the fun. Watch the first two seasons of the 2008/2009 release and then watch the 2024 show to get caught up on where it leaves off. If you liked Frieren (and most people do), you'll probably like Spice & Wolf. Similar vibes overall.

Both.

Make no mistake, there is also quite a bit of furry sexual tension. Like... 15% of the anime. The rest is medieval economics and the foundational bedrock of the concept of credit.

I don't understand the economics

I respect that, enjoy the naked wolf girl

It was a really good show, I'm not gonna deny that, and the furry sexual tension was not nearly as furry pornish as they could have made it, thankfully, but damn... I only took one economics class and I could barely understand what was happening.

The most complex thing is probably the speculative stock market on gemstones and the idea of crashing a market to one's own advantage, other things are like... 'buy nails to sell when you expect settlements to be built' and 'basic spices are valuable and easy to transport in large quantities', or 'credit is useless if your creditor is bankrupt'

Honestly, all I remember was the plot where they caught wind of currency manipulation. I should watch it again.

They redid the show to actually include plot points that are important in later seasons. Same voice actors for the English dub though. Thats the really important part.
