'Photographer Paul Nicklen' discovered this devoted mother humpback basking in the warm waters off the coast of Tonga, patiently waiting for her baby to grow and building strength for the long journey back to their feeding grounds in Antarctica.
"Photographer Paul Nicklen discovered this devoted mother humpback basking in the warm waters off the coast of Tonga, patiently waiting for her baby to grow and building strength for the long journey back to their feeding grounds in Antarctica.
The whale song of a distant male filled the waters as Paul descended to capture the moment. He filmed for as long as he could, bid a silent farewell, and gently floated to the surface.
Paul says there are some breath-hold dives where the experience is so mesmerizing you can forget about the burning sensation in your lungs—this was one of them."

Paul Nicklen is one of my favorites. Some of the greatest wildlife shots of the last 20 years have been from him.

Please don't tell Japan, Norway & Iceland where they are.
hyperthetically
Not sure about the others, but Norway only hunts minke whales, in a sustainable fashion.
fishintennessee
This is beautiful.
GnomeDeGuerre
What a sweet baby meat torpedo, getting nudged about as momma turns to see the strange fish.
lemcg1966
I like how she did a roll at the end to get a better look at what the photographer was doing.
FisheswithDynamite
My appreciation for the beauty in the ocean has been forever tarnished by the savagery of the orca.
Boatsntoes
Am I the only one that really wants to clean off all of their face parasites? Like Dr. Pimple Popper XL.
FoxyTheSmoke

What incredibly beautiful creatures we are all privileged to have seen. Hope it's not too late.
Largerabbit
They are bouncing back hard. There are whale sightings in the last few years in places they haven't been seen in centuries :)
notsohasty
The warming ocean however is a threat to their food's food source.
GoodGuyGonzo
Not necessarily a good thing
awesmond
What do you mean?
grimnorseman
They taste good and Japan is "researching" that taste into oblivion..
AssapoopshitsMassachusetts
Climate change etc could be pushing them to not ideal areas bc that's the only place left with fish etc.
SanityAsylum
Why does the ocean sound like a damn fish tank in this video?
EpilatorAlligatorBothReduceGrowth
And hopefully they won’t meet a pod of orcas on the way. :( I was so traumatised by learning how they’ll kill the calf.
MrTruTru
Its so beautiful but so scary
Whatswrongwiththispicture
All those freeloaders stuck to mama whale’s belly tho
lordofthedice
Assuming they're remoras, they're actually pretty beneficial to the whale.
BOSSMOPS
They keep them clean don't they?
lordofthedice
Yes and can also remove parasites that might attach to the whale's skin. They also tend to feed on their host's fecal matter.
