ACK is short for "Acknowledgement". It's a confirmation that a message has been received received. FIN basically means "I want to close the connection".

It could be worse, I'm still (slightly) in debt for a chemistry degree that I never used. Self studied for CCNA, got NOC job and worked up the ladder from there.

I was a NOC for almost 3 years, not a terrible job but pretty boring, I was nightshift and 99% of the time completely alone. The best part was it was only 3 miles from my house, I left because they wanted to consolidate 3 data centers NOC's to all being at one site 35 miles away and everything was remote. I said nope, not driving 70 miles a day to be more bored with 5 other NOCs all doing the same job.

Fellow nightshifter! We were rarely bored, but there was always something going on and we were always understaffed. It was at an ISP so there were always fiber cuts, card failures, weird software stuff, humans breaking stuff, outage bridges, etc. I am glad to have made it up and out of there, but it did make me learn a lot real quick.

TCP = Transmission Control Protocol
A protocol by which each bunch of data sent has a check within it. After the receiving party gets it, it checks and has to send back an "OK, send the next" or a "Something's wrong, can you send the previous one again?"
UDP = User Datagram Protocol
A protocol that just bombards the target with data without checking to see if it's received or good.
Most traffic is on TCP because of the checks, but some data (like Voice over IP) is UDP.
