I changed the needle in my sewing machine and it quit working. I was just about to toss it when I saw a similar video. It made me wonder…turns out the new needle was too short and not reaching low enough. Changed it out and now it works.

As a leather worker who enjoys the saddle stitch, I scoff (snort) at the lock stitch and it's weakness. Still, if clever folk had not figured out the sewing machine... it would all still be manual stitching these days.

That is a variation of the chain stitch. Not a lockstitch, Lockstitch uses a single hook not a double one in the demonstration.

Pretty sure my old cast iron chonker works on mostly magic at this point since i dont think anyone that has ever owned it has done any maintenence on it.

My mom is a retired upholsterer. Very good and accomplished. Her work was on TV and she did work for local celebs etc. She found lots of stuff in rich people’s couches. Anyway. One time she sewed through her finger nail into the bone and my dad who is handy but hates blood had to disassemble the machine with her in it. Thats it. That’s the story.

I was always confused as to how a piece of yarn can pass through a mechanical axle, only by seeing one in real life I could see the connection doesn't need to be perfect, so there are two pieces they connect like a thick Philips screw driver and head, but there's play between them and no place for the string to snag, the mechanism applies tension to the string to pull it back and it finds it's own way through the mechanical axle connection, pretty cool

The C piece isn't actually attached to anything. It's got a retention ring to keep it from falling out that holds it against an arm that pushes it around. It's loosely fitted into the arm so that it can slide forward and backward to let the thread slip around it. The string goes around behind the entire C piece not through the center. The shaft is what the bobbin locks onto.

You'll notice they spend time and detail on every mechanism but the lock stitch without shuttle - because the only reason the thread doesn't become hyper entangled with everything is black magic.

My mom used to do shuttle tatting back in the day without even looking at the shuttles or her work. Her hands would just fly like it was second nature and she'd make lace booties for babies, bonnets, butterflies, necklaces, ect. Beads included.

I can barely get by on a single stitch crochet.

Textile work is so belittled but my GOD is it a difficult craft.
