Yeah, people who commit crimes are *people.* they aren't boogie men, they're family members that show other members of their family real love and affection. It's entirely possible someone you love is a rapist, or a murder or a thief or an addict or a thousand other horrible things you never see because you are only there for the good parts.

This is exactly why sex crimes are especially complicated. The victim usually knows their attacker very well beforehand (as a family member, partner, teacher, coach) which makes it difficult for the victim to really comprehend when they've been wronged. Even if the victim understands, they often are made to believe that no one would believe such a person could do such a thing. This allows sex crimes to go unreported more times than not unfortunately.

Please, in the future, don’t list rapist and murderer next to addict as if they are the same. An addict could do awful things for a fix, sometimes even murder, but being an addict in and of itself is not a crime nor is it always a failing of character. It is not the same, or similar. So please, in the future, don’t do that.

Sometimes it's obvious. Sometimes it's not. My neighbors have multiple teenage kids and I can hear them through 2 sets of exterior brick walls constantly screaming at each other. At least one of those kids is going to be in jail by 20 and spend his life cycling in and out of prison, i guarantee it.

I think the whole gist of their comment is that all of these people have secrets that you'd never guess about them because everyone is made of shades of grey and there's no such thing as black and white. So your lovely neighbor/teacher/brother might be an addict or might watch snuff porn or be a serial rapist or maybe their worst sin is *shudders* chewing with their mouth open. Regardless, life isn't as easy as trying to lump one group in as wholly bad because people are complex.

And for clarity, both my parents are addicts and I love them and they're doing amazing now, so I'm simply saying that I don't think the original commenter meant that addicts are morally as reprehensible as murderers or rapists, just that even some of the worst people probably have moments of joy and love and passion that make them relatable.

I get where you’re coming from, but I an addict. Been in recovery for thirteen years, but still an addict. Being grouped into one of the “horrible things,” being qualified as someone who seems dodgy, these are very real reasons that so many people feel crippling shame regarding their addiction and why many are hesitant to seek help for a very real disease. I commented because I was surprised to see the stigma being perpetuated here.

I agree with you. The stigma is terrible and the remarks were uncalled for. But our laws still criminalize what's basically mental illness bc our criminal law doesn't reflect well what is crime, and who is actually victimized by drug crimes. It's a shitty system and as an aside, I'm glad you were able to get sober. It isn't easy and you should be proud.

I respectfully disagree. I’m in recovery 5+ years and yes, addicts and alcoholics are self centered to the extreme. I don’t know anyone in recovery who thinks otherwise - it’s exactly why we’re in recovery, we don’t want to live that way anymore. The stigma of being an addict doesn’t keep ppl out of recovery… if someone wants to drink & use there will never be any shortage of excuses to do so. In fact, to de-stigmatize addiction would be an act of mass enabling.

Shame kept me away from the rooms for a long time, and I know a lot of other alcoholics and addicts who have said the same. Destigmatizing a disease, in my opinion, is not enabling. Destigmatizing- again, in my opinion- is not saying that active addiction is ok or that no harm comes from it, far from it. It is accepting that addiction is an illness requiring treatment the same way depression or cancer is. I’ve personally never found demonizing addicts to be a beneficial approach.
