I'm starting to think that what's outside the house matters. I grew up with shoes indoors, but wipe them off on a mat first--but I grew up with dogs and with woods around the house. So you're coming in but you aren't tracking anything, aren't coming from a city street, etc. Never really got the obsession with taking shoes off.

We have 3 dogs and live in the woods. You take your shoes off at your own peril. Beechnuts, acorns, pine cones, rocks, sticks, etc.. the house gets swept or vacuumed every day, lol. They come in from outside over a wooden grate and a huge coco fiber mat. Still. Try stepping on a little teeny beechnut in the middle of the night. Legos are for pussies.

Well, most dogs lived outside the home, unless you were wealthy and then you wore your shoes, because the staff cleaned the house. Most dogs were working dogs 150 years ago and beyond and so lived out of the home. Flooring isn’t a novel invention, but it wasn’t as common as you may think, unless you’re thinking of urban environments, where dogs were less common. It’s ok if you don’t have a grasp of actual history. One day when you grow up maybe you’ll read some more. Who knows. One can dream.

Lots of people don't have carpeted floors. Hell, many of those places are still widely using packed Earth as flooring (which I consider more civilized than cheap hard flooring - carpets FTW), so this might explain some things. Not to mention, in warmer climates, flip flops are worn, if any footwear at all.

Here in Albania it's a weird outside shoes off but inside shoes on. Usually slippers, or booties, or the weird open back puff slippers with rubber soles. Get home and take off your outside shoes. Slip on something for inside.
Most buildings here are usually quite cold in autumn, winter, and spring being primarily concrete and your feet will be cold if just in socks.

Cuba is (from what I've been told, anyhow) exactly the same. Slippers, house shoes, etc. inside, always.
They even have a term for barefoot, "pata sucia", which literally means "dirty foot" but rhymes with "puta sucia", or "dirty whore". So I guess it's serious business down there.

We got 4 dogs. 2 geriatric 2 puppies. Its a shoes or slippers mandatory house. Unless you like "mystery pudles" that is.....even more fun to play "is it chocolate?" (It is never chocolate). "Booty checks" are mandatory for the dogs before getting on the bed.

That's what I was gonna say. People with dogs and a garden are often 'shoes on' because the house is simply always dirty. One more reason to not have dogs IMHO, besides the vet costs, the ticks, etc...

Which is exactly why our Canadian home is a shoes on home. Wheelchair users can't really take off their "shoes". So the floor is almost always at least a lil dirty and gritty. And my autistic ass ca NOT STAND the feel of grit under my feet. I hope to one day be able to afford a self emptying robot vacuum. Then maybe we can go back to being a shoes off home.

They come inside with paws. They do not take their paws off when they come in. You'd be placing your bare feet on whatever they might track in from outside.
Mind you, you have door mats for both shoes and paws and IMO it's never an issue regardless. But it kinda defeats any purpose of taking shoes off when the paws are already coming in.
