I do not like the cobra chicken.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A "refinery" implies the materials being processed are being chemically or thermally altered, a "mill" implies they are being cut and shaped

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My niece forgot the word for Apron so she said backwards cape, lol

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Y'all. It's called a wood butchery. Sheesh.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My sister dated a Norwegian guy in college, and she wouldn't correct him when he did this because she thought it was cute.

?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Timber refinery sounds like something out of a Command and Conquer game - much more futuristic.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And probably a NOD building.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lumber mill, timber mill, wood mill, wood factory, timber factory are all acceptable alternatives, but timber refinery has class!

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

One of the few redeeming qualities of the English language is that if you're approximately correct, most people will still understand you.

3 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

You mean the tree upgrade centre?

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Plank palace?

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Isn’t that the strip club down by the interstate off-ramp?

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hey, timber refinery gets the point across. I feel like that’s the hardest part of communicating in a second language sometimes.

i'm not sure Imgur is the goodest place to be learning English...

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It's perfectly cromulent site for learning simplified English.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Welp, Timber Refinery just entered my vocabulary.

3 years ago | Likes 230 Dislikes 1

Sounds like something you'd find in a video game economy

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Awwwwww

3 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

I'm a hobbyist woodworker and I refuse to call it anything but this from now on too! ?

3 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

I also prefer timber refinery. It sounds so distinguished

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My SO’s first language is French and busts out things like this all the time! “Windshield factor” was a good one

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

In French it's "facteur vent" or "facteur aeolien", which means the temperature it feels like with the wind, mostly used in the winter.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In her case that one was more like misunderstanding the English from when she was young haha

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

so... windchill factor, then, which [checks notes] is what we call it here in Canada, eh

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Can't believe they duped you like that. It's called a plank forge

3 years ago | Likes 606 Dislikes 0

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I like that. I was a plank inspector at a plank forge for a few years.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No you are mistaken. That is where you smelt down the lumber to remove the impurities. You are looking for a “cellulose smithy”

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's a Woodworks.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Log toolery

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Timber refinery sounds better to me

3 years ago | Likes 1284 Dislikes 3

In Canada we call them timfiners

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Honestly, things like these are my favorite part of people learning a new language. It may not be correct, but it's clever and accurate.

3 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

This is me trying to speakSpanish. I'm usually not correct but can get my point across.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thats where you soak your logs in wood, right?

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Upgrade to iOS 16.2 and you can get a Tinder refinery /s

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Sounds like an upgrade structure in an Ago of Empires knockoff

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was gonna upvote this comment but it's at 666 points and Hail Satan

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

"I'm a material handler at the timber refinery" does sound better than "I unload the big saw at the lumber mill"

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Makes me think of a Mill dedicated to making Paper Pulp since thats more of a process

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

maybe, refining is a chemical process to my mind, and milling a physical one

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Next up on the euphemism treadmill

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yep. Me too

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wood Ocean Zone

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That’s the best name for the pulp and paper mill

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I call to order The English Verbiage Counsel. Motion to replace Lumber Mill with Timber Refinery. All for? All opposed? Motion is passed.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Zug Zug!

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Like "recycle bin" instead of "waste paper basket"? ;) If so, i agree.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sounds more refined

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

...I think that would describe a sawmill, not a lumber mill. Presuming the buildings in "Imperialism" were named correctly.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But.... Mills don't usually plane down the boards do they? Bc that would be in my mind the true definition of refining timber. *shrugs*

3 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 0

You're thinking "refining lumber". You refine timber into lumber. You refine lumber into a ton of shit like molding, decking, etc...

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Meh ... that's shaping? Maybe they treat the wood? I don't know. Sounds nice though.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Mills do make the sheets of veneers though, and that is definitely refined wood

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The ones near me do

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Worked at a family sawmill for a summer turning trees into usable boards. So I would say they do based on my singular experience.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A building where one refine timber into planks

3 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

Refining is removing impurities, milling is reducing something.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A Plankery!

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

And if you recut those planks? Replankery!

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Processes" timber into planks (at this point, I do understand this entirely a discussion of semantics)

3 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

I'm sorry, I thought you came here for an argument...

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

No I didn't!

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Do you "Process" oil into gasoline, or "refine oil" or both?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

While I agree, "Lumber Processing Plant" is a bit of a mouthful

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

LPP for short, not to be confused with the famous Latin porn star

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I love how non native English speaking people phrase things. Technically correct, but not standard. Respect for those learning new languages

3 years ago | Likes 201 Dislikes 2

I think my favorite of these situations was someone being spooked by a goose (swan?), and saying "I do not like the cobra chicken"

3 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 0

I remember reading those, and I'm almost positive it was a native Mexican saying it. That accent would put it over the top for me.

3 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Aquarium turned into "fish zoo" for me once.. now my SO can't stop making fun of me for it, haha

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I get corrected constantly by my Latinx coworkers, cuz I'm learning Spain Spanish and they're PR, Dominican, Columbian, etc. Lol

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My friend from Spain, and my friend from Arg/Ven both refer to the SA Spanish as "Taco" to distinguish between them. Usted everywhere.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I loathe usted. So much.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I like "hospital van" for ambulance. Also "Cobra chicken." And "hand socks" (mittens).

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yesterday my toddler referred to dreams as "sleepy adventures" and damn if that isn't going straight into my lexicon too.

3 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 2

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Even more respect when the new language is feckin’ English!

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Why? English is everywhere, it's the easiest language to learn.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Says you? As a native english speaker?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I speak 6 languages English being the second, 20 years in UK

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Interesting. I’ve had many ESL folks say English was more difficult for them than French or Italian. Thanks for the input.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

U should have seen my surprise when I asked someone how do brits call a cement mixer....

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Rolly polly rock-n-stoney"

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was speaking Spanish trying to say express as in express an opinion but was saying express as in express breast milk.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Learning Korean at DLI, teacher saw we were burned out, and said the day's lesson would be in profanity and we instantly perked up...1

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

... so she taught us a couple of insults and functions (like "fucking" as in "I burnt the fucking toast"), and so she asked for something..2

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

... good to yell in traffic. I told her "If you put "Fuck" in front of pretty much any noun, it's creative and it works. Like 'fuckstick'..3

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

"...fuck-ass, fuck head etc." so she thinks for a second and says "Fuckfrog?" and we all burst out laughing. I call people "fuckfrog" now.4

3 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

And 9/10 times we know exactly what you mean. Are other languages as understandable even when spoken "broken"?

3 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

One of the things Japanese learners teach you is to do exactly this. Learn to say "How do you say ..." or the language's version of 1/

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

"whatchamacallit," then just string together the vocab you know to explain. One example I saw was instead of landlord, "house boss." 2/2

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yes.ESL from Polish here & I find the major problem is incorrect conjugation or order. If the root word is right you still get the gist of it

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Besides that a lot of languages have different dialects and accents - think of hillbillies and southerners vs media/news English in the US.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's not technically correct. Refining removes impurities, whereas milling is the shaping of said object. You mill a log into shape.

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 4

So timber forge would be better?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If we took that sort of thing too seriously we would only call it electricity if it came from amber, and only oranges orange.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Id consider bark an impurity when working with wood. Is it the method of removal specifically that defines it?

3 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Yes. Refining involves high heat which essentially boils apart the impure substances from the pure. Milling is rolling into a shape or (1/2)

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Now how does one go about becoming a refined gentleman. I dont fancy boiling myself

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

by shitting your pantaloons, my good sir

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

(2/2) cutting away with a saw or press.
