Exposure to such devices, especially at close proximity, often causes the following symptoms in crowds:
Permanent hearing loss
Tinnitus (persistent ringing in the ears)
Ruptured eardrums
Vertigo and balance disorders
Migraines and nausea
Panic reactions

Now they're using the Discombobulators on us?
MeestowKitty
Its too bad those LRAD are bullet proof.
freshthrowaway1138
Considering the police have been using them against civilian protests since the Occupy movement, and no one thought to make it illegal; y'all shouldn't be surprised when Trump's ICE decided to use it.
The Regime is laying waste to the lazy ignorance of the American public. They're bringing into your face all the things that this nation has been doing for decades, and rubbing our noses in our incompetence. We failed at Democracy.
ChazzK
This feels like it should be along the same lines as using anti-aircraft guns against close range infantry.
Y'know, ANOTHER thing the Nazis were fond of doing.
circlebreaker
From Blegrade, Serbia, last year in March. It's apparently so loud that it's like having a train surprise you by blowing its whistle with your back turned.
darkoshen
Just how far away can an amateur sniper successfully strike? Just wondering.
KellionBane
Can't they sue for assault?
TheVillageGrouch9000
MSP? Oh Governor Walz?... It is a weapon that cannot been seen by cameras. Have no idea if they are able record the actual aural impact.

The ICE agents would enjoy it even more.

That’s when the deaf infantry attacked.

How expensive are these, and how long would it take to replace them if something... unfortunate were to occur to them?
Schlutt
Facists? They're basically disposable.
alcamar
With their budget, faster than we'd hope
WholeWheatBunnyHugger
30 thousand for the portables. Up to 100k for truck mounted. They're pretty fragile, too.
mychesthairlookslikeacatsass
My therapist at the VA said their budget for ICE is insane right now. They’re getting vouchers for nice hotels, restaurants, new equipment, gs-13 level pay rates with little to no education and shipping them around in jets like Star Wars
They would have them stacked like chips
Johnsky
His own personal army.

The fact that MSP is siding with ICE is a serious problem that Walz needs to address. If he refuses to address it in any meaningful capacity, then there's no trust left between the people and the office of the Governor. Or anyone in Minnesotan government.
tidepool
Why do they have LRAD to use against their own citizens anyway?!? That’s insane warfare.
TrashCanEnthusiast
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXKTBQBugIA Saw this LRAD test a while back. Most effective countermeasure is a plastic riot shield. Blocks most of the sound, and if you flip it around it does a decent job of reflecting it back at them.
Bugkeeper
Over-ear headphones (off if electronic!) plus the shield works best of the things they tested
gesel
earplugs. It is a loud, directional speaker. LRAD is a brand. They're generically long range acoustic hailers. Maybe 143 dB on axis 1m for the big ones.

Physiologically, it can cause immediate, irreversible injury to hearing and balance, acute incapacitation of the whole body, and secondary neurological and cardiovascular harm after seconds of exposure.
svon1
yes...but that was in Serbia and the LRAD had to be discontinued... because the protesters threatened to blow it up and kill the police officers using it
tomianttila
“At one point, they launched something; I don’t know how to describe it… It was like a very intense sound wave. Suddenly I felt like my head was exploding from the inside. We all started bleeding from the nose. Some were vomiting blood. We fell to the ground, unable to move. We couldn’t even stand up after that sonic weapon, or whatever it was.” https://www.studentnewsdaily.com/daily-news-article/witness-says-us-used-powerful-mystery-weapon-during-maduro-raid/

Jesus this needs to be made illegal. Some kind of war crime.

Yeah, that's brilliant! Reflectors. A frontline of people with snow saucers & riot shields pointed back at the source. Now we're talkin.'

you can't EMP a trebuchet

If you look hard enough, a trebuchet is an answer to almost every problem. And when a trebuchet isn't the answer, often a bigger trebuchet is.

That's when I would lose it and go silverback on these cunts. It would be death by cop but I'm sensitive about my hearing.

LRAD came around in the early 2000's. That's a quarter of a century ago. Here it is in use during the protests against the right wing regime in Serbia earlier this year, this is what we're up against: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYBNOUqANis

The next Nuremberg trials need to be much crueler
WholeWheatBunnyHugger
Lrad uses a beam of sound and can be reflected back. Large piece of thin plywood with either cardboard and/ or a big piece of cardstock glued to it. Aim it back at them!

Wouldn't it be great if something as simple as noise canceling earbuds would work against it
tomianttila
They don't. Sound waves = pressure. High enough pressure to rupture ear drums and cause internal bleeding. Reflecting it also doesn't work, air waves move around shields.
WholeWheatBunnyHugger
Combine them with good headphones, and they do!
WholeWheatBunnyHugger
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CXKTBQBugIA
tomianttila
I'm sorry, friend, they can't. Pressure waves will wrap around the shield. It might help some, but doubtfully much enough to matter. DENSE barriers can help, earbuds and heavy duty ear muffs/ear protectors help a bit, but they don't stop pain, disorientation, or nausea
WholeWheatBunnyHugger
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CXKTBQBugIA
Move laterally if you're in the beam, break line of site behind a car or a tree but most of all, understand the LRad is a tool of intimidation used to disperse large crowds and get you to go home and let the fascists have thier fun.
But it is -directional- with a narrow beam. Meaning if you find it pointing at you, get behind it. Also, they are expensive and fragile

Sure, ok, I'm not arguing, I'm trying to dispel some myths because I hear this go around, and when you're on the ground and facing one of these things, you shouldn't think that it's that easy protecting yourself or deflecting it. Plywood board vs high powered LRAD is a losing proposition, and if we are to be prepared for what is to come, we need to stay realistic, is my take. Not looking to be an asshole, only to inform. <3
