Grew up in the 80s hearing “never again” for things like the holocaust. Now in my 40s, we watched a genocide approaching, commissioned, carried out, nearly completed? And the powers that I thought would step up and handle something like this since that time just sat there and let it happen. Enabled it. I don’t think I’ve put it in these terms before, but it made me feel un-American. Like I’d rather be a citizen of anywhere else than this.

The hatred, without fail, comes from the top. The people in power want more (money, control, power, whatever), so they find any weakness in their populations views that they can and exploit it to garner public support to take more money/control/power/etc from others by any means. If instead they turned their attention to addressing those weaknesses and educating people instead, the whole country could see far greater prosperity... but they personally would see less, and they can't stand that.

I think the capacity for empathy is a factor that about half of the population seems to be missing. I wonder if this is genetical (some signs point to that Neanderthals were the ones with empathy, Homo Sapiens notsomuch, but they interbred so maybe that's why some have it and some don't). And the lack of empathy creates the negatives in the world that we live in.

There's some evidence that anyone in the US born before 1996, the passing of the clean air and water act, have some level of brain damage from leaded gasoline.
Those born before 1978, when leaded gasoline was mostly phased out, had even more exposure and possible damage.
Lead poisoning damages the part of the brain responsible for empathy and quite a few other things TBH.
It's something I think about when I look at the age of our ruling class here in the US.

I think our social environment has a large role to play as well. Our systems are literally designed to keep the working class (majority of people all over the world, but especially in industrialized countries) tired and apathetic. I wan't to believe so many people actually care, and that they have empathy, but just don't have the bandwidth to do anything with it. It's very hard to focus on being concerned for someone half the globe away when you struggle just to take care of your own family.

I can’t speak for foreign lands but *I think* it all comes down to power and money. The intense feeling of ‘I work hard’ or ‘I’m miserable’ therefore I should have it better than that guy or I didn’t get the help I needed so that person shouldn’t. I also believe this is why church is so important to some. The one place you can have power if yer dogshit everywhere else - believe harder and you’re better than someone.

I know. I'm Irish, my Grandmother told stories of her childhood during the War of Independence, stories of her grandfather's memory of the Famine when he was a child. I grew up safe,middle class, in the countryside, proud to be Irish AND European..but with an appreciation that not many are so lucky, and my ancestors were lucky to survive. I unequivocally agree. I am 38. In my youth, I always thought, for some reason, that the world would be far better by the time I reached this general age. How bitterly disappointed I am to be living in this monstrous future where we brush aside genocide because of geopolitical inconvenience. Where we ignore assured climate disaster because it's not profitable. Where we re-learn the violence of the last century's fascistic tendencies. My education about these things meant nothing, it seems.

I am a left wing voter, but where I live left wing is still about protecting the environment, human rights, schools, health care, public services and workers rights.
