I live north of Seattle, and the last time I had some work in St Louis, it felt abandoned. There was no rush hour traffic, and the downtown was quiet ... I wanted to move there immediately

The arch should have been built across the river, not parallel to it. It's a symbol of a gateway connecting both sides of the Mississippi

There is a law that no building can be taller, but that's not the real reason. The city has lost most of its anchor industries. Used to have lots of brewing, a stockyard, other agriculture related business, biotech, insurance. Some manufacturing. Now.... Mostly small to medium businesses.

That's actually untrue. The only place in St. Louis where a building cannot be taller is east of Memorial Drive, so basically in line with the Arch grounds itself. West of there a building can be any height. There was a plan for a 1,000 ft tower that was approved but fell through a few years ago for example. St. Louis biggest issue is the giant rail yard and two separate interstates that basically cuts off downtown and turns it into a little island that limits its growth.

The way St Louis developed and maintained the City-County divide meant that other towns also developed a prominent "downtown". This is Clayton, just 15 minutes west.

Used to commute from there: 1.5hrs to Zurich, 5 hrs to Geneve, 7 hrs to Luxembourg. Swiss rail was fantastic.

Every so often I get curious about a city and I do a quick google on the population. There's only 290,000 St. Louis residents. It's amazing how small cities get so well known.

Well the metropolitan area is 2.8 million - not sure I'd call that a "small city". 290k is just the people within the city limits. St. Louis took a different route with regards to annexation - rather than just keep growing and annexing like most other cities instead they just grew as a collection of small connected cities. Though the population has also shrunk due to people moving out of the core.

Well...not the whole story. The city used to be among the largest in the country(4th largest in 1900) and was in the top 10 until the 1970 census(when it had 750,000 residents) but has shrunk massively since then due to a lot of poor decisions. The Metro area is still quite large, though.

The metro pop is 2.7m, and the only reason St.louis city is that limited in the population is that it literally can not expand because the county around St.louis county refuses to allow it.
Back in 1904, the population was ~575k, as it was still the gateway to the west for the most part. (I've lived around here the majority of my life, so I have an above average level of knowledge of the area)

The city of St Louis voted in 1876 to separate from the county. It was the first city in America to establish a home rule charter. Missouri is still divided into 115 counties and one independent city.
