The Woolworths in my town was the site of one of the lunch counter sit-ins! Kudos to the brave students from Livingstone College for making civil rights history! Also their fries and milkshakes were super.

Here in Germany Woolworth not only still exists but is thriving in the form of non-food Discounter. Just a year ago a new one opened next City.

They still exist in Australia. I was so shocked. Obviosly a different entity. They also still have Toys R Us here in Japan, to my general happiness.

I bought my Atari 2600 There and when they were closing I bought a clearance file cabinet. By chance (the chance being my wife is re-arranging the living room) the Atari is siting on the file cabinet to my left right now.

I remember when they had a diner in them. The last time I step foot into one I went into their diner, which was empty, I was the only customer, I sat in a booth to order coffee and read the newspaper. The waitress told me I had to sit at the counter since I was alone. I looked at all the empty seats and said "I'm your ONLY customer". She repeated it. So I left. Never went back into another one after that.

Thing is, it's outfits like Woolworths and Sears that started the move from local stores to big box outfits, setting the stage for the retail desert we currently live in. Shop local.

When Woollies was shutting down in the UK I went to buy a Christmas tree, but the stand was missing so I took it back. It was a 8 minute walk to my flat and 15 steep steps to the front door, and I am a small person, this will be important in a moment. The manager was a young guy who swapped my tree for a 6ft & £10 at no extra cost, when I thanked him but said I couldn’t carry it home he did it for me. Right to the door. I'm looking at it right now and I think about his kindness every year.

It was a neat place, but they were a pain at times. I got burned once buying a video card from them years back. Someone returned one with the wrong memory module and it only had half the Vram, Or rather it had the ram, but address lines were backwards so it displayed a bottom corner inverted if I went over the ram on the card. Didn't notice till I got home out of state.

My little town was my favorite place to go when mom went shopping. A coke, some change and the my little world was exciting. Always some old mansipping black coffee at the café counter, waitress always topping off his cup when she walked by, new coloring books on display.
And S&H stamps! She found her last books when moving but no more stores around. Not sure what she did with them.

After Thxgvng, my childhood Woolworth's would open their upper floor, dedicated to toys and hobbies, including an HO scale scenic train layout, and expertly assembled & painted plastic models. Also, at times known only to parents and elves, Mrs. Claus would be available to ask children the good ol' "naughty or nice" query and hear a child's toy list from her husband. Each child would get a little toy after exiting Mrs. Claus's lap. Toys were based on how much parent tipped Mrs. Claus.

There's a store in Okinawa we called "the monkey stores because its logo was a giant cartoon monkey. In one trip I bought a groceries, a sofa, laminate hardwood flooring, an alarm clock, a fish tank, and a bunch of red bellied piranha.

our local woolworths had an A4 printed sign up saying you consented to the facial recognition stuff by entering the store, and the sign was pinned up on a wall behind a pillar so that noone could see it from the entry or exit points.

Growing up, My Mom took me to the library every Friday after school and the Woolworth's counter after, for a Coke, French fries and a burger. They had those little "fortune teller" machines like in Twilight Zone, and a Pez vending machine.

I've seen "Woolworth" in Germany but it's not quite "Woolworths" maybe Australia? People in the US generally don't have to specify for we have claimed the internet as our realm. Our physics world is dying and being stolen by fascists. We have mostly retreated to the virtual world.

Not so fast... Brand new Woolworths just went up less than a year ago in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Haven't been in, but damn, definitely a memory lane moment. Same font on the building signage.
