You don't need a bridge to cross the canals today...

I haven't smoked in over a decade and now I want a cigarette.

Death to all royalty. The French got it, be like the French.

I happened to be in Amsterdam six years ago during Koningsdag. We didn't even know it was happening until we got there two days before. I've been to Mardi Gras in New Orleans and this seemed ten times bigger to me.

Koningsdag or King's Day is a national holiday in the Netherlands. Celebrated on 27 April the date marks the birth of King Willem-Alexander.

The Dutch are the greatest people in the world.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Curious if you’re the “greatest” peoples who’s the worst?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Americans who support Donald J Trump. In case you are wondering my heritage is not Dutch. I just lived in Holland for about 3 years.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The dutch king is really good on his sax!

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

King day? Do they still have a king?

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Technically he's a civil servant whose job title is "king of the Netherlands". We can choose, via our government, who's our head of state, but the government can only choose from one specific family.

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Mostly ceremonial, holds no real official power. Still, nice excuse to throw a party.

Village holders?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Literal translation is more in the direction of 'city holder', less literal would be 'city keeper'. It was essentially the title of the steward of the Dutch Republic at the time. That all said, my knowledge of my nation's history is spotty at best😬

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Oh yeah, village is stedl not stadt

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Village would be 'dorp' in Dutch. No clue what 'stedl' might be.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't let Denethor hear about this.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Don't smoke in large crowds. That's making a lot of people uncomfortable just because one person couldn't hold their unhealthy habit until they leave. Or leave the crowd, enjoy your cancer and return.

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 11

I agree with your view that folks shouldn't smoke in public spaces, especially crowded ones, but it's not a "habit", it's an addiction, and the damn things should be illegal. Please write your elected representative and ask point blank why tobacco & nicotine products are still on the shelf. :)

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Because prohibition doesn't work. We saw in the US how that went with alcohol and how it continues to go with various drugs (not well, to put it lightly).

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Many people can drink alcohol with no adverse affects. There is, however, no such thing as a 'casual smoker'. The government is also addicted to the money they make from tobacco. Yeah, people can get harmful things from underground sources, but you're not going to say "people can get heroin anyway so lets put it on the shelf in the grocery store".

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

what are you talking about? I had a cigarette yesterday and my last one was a few months ago. Casual certainly exists.

Is this a cigarette ad?

2 years ago | Likes 86 Dislikes 5

Eh, it's not working if it is. Granted I hate cigarettes so perhaps I'm bias, but even an incredibly attractive woman like that instantly loses any appeal to me when she starts smoking.

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 6

I find both smoking and vaping extremely off-putting. I am a smoke magnet anyway (the smoke will always come towards me), so being next to a smoker is very unpleasant.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Strangeley, (to me at least) a LOT of young people - all classes- still start and continue smoking in Europe. That Dutch babe paid almost $10 for a pack.

2 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 0

Looks like a rolly or joint to me

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 14

$10 a pack that's cheap, normally they are like $20-25.

Well yeah, it depends on the size of the package. 20cigs are ~€11 but you do have bigger packs that are almost €20.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, that was a 'wtf? younger folks are still stinking up the joint with cigarettes?' Weird that anyone still thinks smoking is anything but gross and a sad, expensive addiction.

Man I sure would love to be in Holland. Seems like just a cool place, all around.

As a Dutchman, we currently have our own Republican shitfest.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Has its ups and downs. Is a cool place tho.

There are only two things that I hate, people that are unaccepting of other people culture and the fucking

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Agreed, I had a very fun day lazing around at home.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just because they're drunk and obnoxious doesn't mean they shouldn't go out.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Agreed. I had to deliver pizzas today. Luckily I was able to avoid the city center mostly and didn't have too much trouble.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Most? Try all! I live outside the city... besides the flags hanging, I didn't notice anything. Bliss!

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

That's a lie, you guys only have cities and fields, you can't live outside a city. ;)

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Villages. Forests...

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You don't have forests either, and your villages are more like suburbs. :P

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I used today to sleep in. Hard to do with the loud music outside, but I managed. (I did buy a pack of oranje tompoezen after waking up)

2 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 0

As a true Dutchman, I'll wait tomorrow to buy them on sale.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

My friend works at Hema, so he didn't have to.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah one of them has eaten a lot of tompouce in the last few days, another just baked some herself, with passionfruit for the orange.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

My Dutch friend's only recognition of this day is the appearance of particular sweets.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My friend baked her own, using passion fruit to make orange tompuce.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It’s so crowded, nobody went

2 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

None of my friends went. Loads of other people did.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's such a beautiful contradiction. I think I know what you meant with it, and I really like the phrasing.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Bollocks. Most people are obnoxious my arse. It's a great daywe had a great time as always!

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 4

Ah, one of the peoply people.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Not really. The NL is a very big place, bigger than Amsterdam. I've done Amsterdam many times in my younger days and had a great time. Now I enjoy in a smaller place, people can get a bit drunk and be nice people... It's possible

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have actually only been to Amsterdam for a concert once, otherwise I've stayed with friends in Leiden, Tilburg, Rotterdam, Alphen, etc. I did use the wrong word though, I know most aren't obnoxious, and my answer to you was a bit rude. I know people can be drunk and nice, my friends, for example, but many of us are also easily overwhelmed by the crowds, and if you are not part of the public celebration, you are only really inconvenienced by it. But yes, wrong word and a bit rude, I apologise.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Although, I have to say, no, the Netherlands really isn't a big place. A very densely populated place, but not big. ;)

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No apologies needed ❤️. It can get messy, but perhaps being a bit drunk yourself helps to help ignore the bad aspects. Rude yes, sure, large crowds with booze, yes rude. Plus tbf , Dutchies can seem a bit rude, even when they're not being. I lived in Leiden for a long time and honestly, I stayed away from the centre at its peak Koningsdaag time, stay in the periphery: the Bonte Koe etc...

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And still loads of Americans will believe that constitutional monarchies are oppressive.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

To some extent they are right. One of the cousins of the king is the second biggest landlord in Amsterdam and notorious rule breaker with renting. He also organises an f1 race in a nature protected area, while all farmers in NL are being fucked by the government, he gets all permits for the race in time. They don't have any formal power, but him being prince does help a lot.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Rich people getting what they want isn't really limited to monarchies, otherwise I'd be a republican (the British kind not the American kind)

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Centuries of propaganda stemming from a revolution that started because some rich opportunists decided to take advantage of the ignorance of a settler population. "How dare England raise taxes on us after fighting a brutal multi-continent war that protected us from being subjugated by France!"

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Britain not England, but yes exactly. A group of wealthy landowners decided to keep the wealth for themselves instead of paying for their own defence. Imagine if the UK declared war on the US in the 1950s instead of paying back all of the lend-lease money we owed.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I guess in Europe people that woman's age still smoke cigarettes. How weird to see.

2 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 9

You watch too much TV. On TV a prominently placed smoker is a story element, often a big one; but in this case the person filming may have just spontaneously started and didn't notice the smoking lady.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I watch zero tv. We don't have any broadcast or cable tv, haven't for like, 10 years? ... and I don't watch much online either, really.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Most people that smoke at that age that I know aren't Dutch, mostly eastern or southern countries

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

...what?

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

In the US, the last 2 generations have pretty much killed cigarettes. Only old people with a tracheostomy or those sort of nasty looking overweight people who look like the poster child for some sort of rampant VD smoke cigarettes. There's barely even places where it's acceptable to smoke anymore, like those glass zoo cage smoking rooms they put in airports so people can see smokers in their natural habitat.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 7

And you decided Europe is completely different because you saw ONE young person smoking on camera?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They're just vaping now

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Granted, a good number of people have replaced them with vapes, which are their own sort of annoying, but it's clearly not as awful to bystanders at least.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

TBF, we have those "smoke rooms" too; just out on the street it's considered less of a problem, unfortunately.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I agree with u, it’s rare to see a young person actually smoke a cigarette

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Then again, the Dutch do have affordable health care and zero school shootings.

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 3

What's your point? Why do you need to attack him/her this way? It is not a competition for the best country... He/she was just noticing it is unusual to see a person at that age smoking...

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 6

It's kind of insulting to generalise a population based on what they saw one person doing.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

No, they weren't. They were being insulting and condescending. They got the answer they deserved.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I am guessing you aren't living in a poor neighbourhood. ;) It may be much rarer, but smoking isn't dead just yet.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Newports? Newports.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In 1980, it was something like 33% of adults in the US and it was normal to do it everywhere; restaurants, workplaces, hospitals, etc. It's currently fallen to 11%, and like you implied, it's a habit of the poor, like other "considered disreputable" drug habits, or what I said, older people. But not as many of those on account of the whole cancer thing. It's dying like chain family restaurants.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Yes, but it is far from dead yet.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That mooi meisje paid $10 for her pack of Marlboros just to make her smell bad. Why? I don't get it.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Welcome to addiction

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I posted elsewhere 30% of Euro teens are smokers and it isn't going down.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It varies hugely by country

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Among teenagers aged 15-18, the prevalence of smoking across Europe is 30% and is “a well established behaviour” with “almost no signs of a decrease,” said the World Health Organization."

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do you think Europe is one place?
